Homemade White Pizza

In a pinch, it's pretty good. It may also be the fact that my mom made us this pizza growing up USING the horrid crust and dried parm included in the package-I am only nostalgic to a certain point.

Restaurants for a Sat. nite in Charleston with no reservations needed??

We tried BASIL for the first time just a few months ago-OUTSTANDING! I loved it!! And we sat at the chef bar and got to see all the great chefs making the food! What an experience! Highly reccommend for Thai food. We had to wait a bit so we headed next door to their bar, had a few drinks, and when our table was ready, they came over to tell us b/c they are owned by the same people. It is a long walk from Meeting St but we needed it to walk off our stomachs on the way back!!

Homemade White Pizza

Well, after seeing this thread revived, I got the nerve? or just the desire to make a white pizza again from scratch. And I DID IT!! After many of your helpful hints and suggestions, I followed the tastespotting website link and typed in white pizza. I followed a recipe that used heavy cream. (I only had whipping-what is the real difference anyway?-but none the less, I went and got "heavy". It was fantastic and better than my local pizza shop! I'll share the recipe here becuase I have no idea how to link it.

White Pizza Sauce-so simple yet so divine.

2 T olive oil 1 small onion diced 2 cloves (or more) of garlic 1/2 cup heavy cream (thank you Amyzan for the hint) 1 T fresh Thyme Salt and pepper.

In small saucepan, heat oil with onions and garlic over medium heat (I only had a scallion so I used that-still great) for about 5 minutes until soft. Lower the heat to low and add cream. Stir another 3-5 minutes until sauce thickens . Take off heat and add thyme, salt and pepper. Cool completely before using.(I just stuck it in the fridge).

I also had some frozen pizza dough in the freezer, it was labled NewYork Pizza dough and I have no idea who makes because I got it out last night to defrost and threw out the box. But it was fantastic as well. I then proceded to top my yummy sauce with both mozz and provolone cheeses, fresh rosemary and a dusting of chopped tomato.

So there you go, I did it and it was easy! Now onto a great red sauce recipe, I 've tried a few but I still go back to Chef-boy-r-dee's pizza kit-I buy the kit just for the sauce and throw out the crust mix! It that sad or what?

Homemade White Pizza

Thanks everyone for the secrets! I will give them a try, when I have time! (Work/kids have put chowhound on backburner) I love Provolone and I do believe that fresh garlic is the key! And Amyzan, that fresh cream trick makes sense to me! My mouth is watering already!

Your last meal.

You all are too funny! Of course my first thought was lobster, dungeness crab and loads of butter but then I got more ideas from your lists! For starers, shrimp cocktail and a perfect margarita along with some hot, fresh sourdough bread. (1/2 hour). Then I would have a pizza delivered from Betos in PGH with some pale ale. (1 hour) 2nd course would be the best Maryland crabcakes out there with saltines and drawn butter and a glass of conundrum (2 hours with a little nappy in between) For my main meal-grass fed filet mignon topped with blue cheese and a big stuffed baked potatoe-with a fine glass of red wine. For dessert, anything with loads of chocolate and cake or brownie and a plethera of Clark bars, Wispas and English Kit Kats. There. Now I am hungry!

Good crabcake off I-81in MD

Hi all! We are heading up to NY to visit family. But on the way, I would love to get a good crabcake while we pass through MD. My DH refuses to drive through Baltimore, so are their any joints off 81 -maybe in Hagerstown where one can get a decent crabcake? Nobody can make them like they do in MD!! Thanks!

Policy Change: Survey Popups

They are distracting and frustrating!! Such a nusence! Especially the talking ones and the ones that block my thread before I can read it. PLEASE tone them down!

Hostess Cupcakes - Did They Get Smaller or Did We Just Get Bigger?

Dolores you just cracked me up "I guess they will stop when the item disappears."
The cupcakes seem the same to me. They have always been a size to fit nicely in the lunchbox. But they probably have shrunk like everything else. I have noticed portion sizes getting SMALLer at restaurants. At our favorite locally owned chain we used to have leftover for lunch. Not anymore. And yet we still go....

Scrambled eggs add-ins

I saute a little onion and squash in olive oil then add the eggs. When almost done add shredded swiss cheese, cover and melt on low. Just had them for breakfast this morning. Next time I'm gonna go greek with black olives and feta. Yum!

What have you learned from CH?

Amen! and Ditto. Except with the snake thing. Eeeew. I have learned a lot from the many fine posters on this site.(Glad C1 has jumped aboard again!) I have good images of the many frequent posters in my minds eye just from their various posts. Chow has improved my vocabulary in many ways,(although I still do not know what PHO is). I am always learning new things on the homecooking board like how to make the best meatloaf, margaritas and cheap eats. I have also learned to use the backbutton because most of the time I am out of my league with most. Now I am going to read that Rib thread...thanks for the link iluvtennis!

Beaufort, SC

I think you mean Michael Anthony's on Hilton Head. It is excellent. But the op wants Beaufort and the drive to HH is about an hour on a good day.

Really, Really Easy Dessert?

Sorry, I meant teaspoons. That's what you get when you are in a hurry.

Really, Really Easy Dessert?

My favorite EAsy go to dessert is Peanutbutter Chocolate chip cookie bars:

2 rolls pillsbury chocolate chip cookie dough(I know, I know but she wanted easy!)

1 1/2 cups peanut butter
1/1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 1/2 cups vanilla

Spread first roll into 9x13 pan
Mix pbutter and sugar and vanilla
Spread mixture on dough
Crumble second roll of dough over the top.

Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes. When cool, cut into squares.
Enjoy!

American Chop Suey

I have never had ACS! I can't wait to try it. Or maybe I just blocked it from my memory....Sounds like a quick fix for the family when I don't have a lot of time or energy to cook. I would be tempted to add cheese though. My mom used to make....oh never mind that belongs on another thread. :) (I like smileys) I just finished reading the other posts and realised that THIS is what my husband has been referring to as goulash! I never knew what the heck he was talking about. He will be in for a treat (I guess??) some night soon.

Favorite Chocolate Bar

Just saw the Take 5's in minis at Target-as I recall from last year, they are hard to find year round so stock up.

I also saw the Ritter bars at Target 3/$5.

My name is Randi and I am a Chocoholic. Thankyou.

Favorite Chocolate Bar

You just reminded me of the yummy Aero bars in the UK section of World Market. Love those!! They melt in the mouth. Reminds me of my beloved Chocolite and Wispa bars that have hit the candy bar graveyard.

Do Your Friends or SO's Know of Your Chowhound Obsession?

I do talk about Chowhound at work etc. and have actually turned some others into Ch'ers but I donlt really tell anybody my screen name. And like others, my DH knows that I consult Chow for any unknown resto and since we share a computer, he was kind enough to save the Chow to the desktop (along with Pioneer woman) along with the rest of his stuff. Even though I have never met any other Chowhounds, I do feel like I know many of you like family and friends. But on my tiny island, there is not much chowing going on. I do miss the big city.....

Favorite Chocolate Bar

HAha heh heh, I just bought one of those today from the bank of all places! The tellers are selling them for a buck at Bank of America. I really do have a addiction!

Favorite Chocolate Bar

Yes! Why don't they make Almond Joy in Dark? They seem to be doing it with every other kind of drug store bar out there!

Favorite Chocolate Bar

I just tried the Voges with almond and sea salt. YUMMY. But at $7.00 a pop at about the same size as a Ritter's, I'll stick to my Ritter with Almonds. But then I'll never turn down a good old Hersheys with Almonds-especiallly the big fat one for $1.99. So there you have it, the quality of the bar is based on how much mula is in the purse and how desperate I am for chocolate. And I do love Chocolate. Never tried a Toblerone-the honey and nougat thing does not do it for me, but I may give it a try.

Your mom's weird cooking ... and other stories? (recipes encouraged)

Wow, brings back memories. My mom was famous for her "homemade" spaghetti too-right out of a jar of Ragu. The fact that ground beef was added made it homemade. My DH will only eat sphaghetti this way. He complains when I make it from scratch. I guess we all still like certain things for nostalgic reasons. I think many of us have become adventurous cooks in spite of what we learned as kids. Here were my moms favorites, mind you she only used S&P and cooked most dinners in an electric skillet.

Stuffed peppers (with ground beef tomatoes and rice, topped with breadcrumbs and stips of Kraft singles)
City ckicken? Chicken breaded and cooked in some sort of gravy w/mushrooms
Super dried out meatloaf. Ack!
American chop suey
Chef Boy Ardee pizza from a box (which I still kinda like-nostalgic)
Salmon patties-never ever liked

This thread has statred me thinking, the reason we were served (some, not all) of this junk is b/c they were easy to make. I have learned from my own 2 picky eaters that spending the entire afternnoon making dinner and having it pushed around on plates and not being consumed is very disheartening! I can only throw so much down the disposal before I just say no. But that is a whole new topic!

Best Fast Food Chain?

Oh my! I haven't heard mention that name in a long time!! Used to be my birthday place to go! I would get the Lagostino pot but not before helping myself to the fantastic salad bar-they had the best dressings. I think there might be one left in the greater Pittsbugh area. Is there? It may just be a nostalgic thing for me.....

Things I ate/drank in college that I will never eat again

Oh the memories. I went to college in the late 80's.
Beverages:
QUAD night-4 shots in 1 drink-Sloe Gin Fizzes and Amaretto Sours!

BRAINSTOMPER pitchers...Tasted like Kool-aid. Messed one up badly.

Tequilia shots. I will drink Margaritas though!

Cheap Beer (no wonder I never liked beer until I tasted the good stuff)
Food:
Anyone remember pasta meals. Came in a glass jar? My roommate and I treked a mile to the local grocery store and stocked up to eat them from our hotpot. ACCK!

Of course the Kraft "dinner"-we added tuna and thought we were gourmet.

From the dining hall: Escallopped Chicken. Double EEEWW!

I lived on Bagels with peanut butter and cream cheese. I guess I still eat that now but not in combination.

Back then, the only fast food place was Wendy's uptown and Burger King. I still stay away from both places.

The best thing your school cafeteria served

Growing up in PGH PA, I rarley ate the cafeteria food. Horrid wretched crap. 1exception- when they had mexican pizza. Gooey cheddar cheese atop a beef sauce on a chewey crust. Greeeeeasy. The only other thing I can remember because I have mentally blocked out all such food are the chocolate chip cookies, and only because they were the worst I had ever tasted. My daughter just stated kindergarten and I am really curious to know how their lunches are. Nowadays, cookies aren't even an option. How sad.

Problem of the Day...?

No- please don't drift. I really enjoy your posts too. I also just discovered new posts that have not floated to the top of the current page. They float to the top of the page that they are on. I only have about 8 pages but I can imagine how time consuming it would be for you to read every new post *when it doesn't float to the top of the CURRENT page* chow techies, can this be changed?

Ketchup on Hot Dogs

They have something at a local restaurant here called the wardog. It is a hotdog stuffed with cheddar, wrapped in bacon dipped in beer batter and fried. Then it is put on a toasted roll and topped with chilli, more cheese and onions. I have watched people eat these things but to me, waaay to much going on there is all I'm saying.

Best olive oil?

I buy Lungarotti from Williams Sonoma for my sipping oil. It is a product of Umbria Italy and $40 a bottle for 750 ml. I have tried others but I keep coming back to this one. Not too peppery, not to buttery, just right. Of course all things are subjective.

Shattered Glass on GE Monogram MV

Same thing here, although I think I splashed water on mine while making crab legs. We ordered the part and installed it ourselves but it cost about $90.00 for the glass. After we recieved the glass, DH got angry and realized we could have just gone to the local glass company and ordered the correct size for a lot cheaper. But I am a little more careful when I am using a water bath in the oven.

Hilton Head, SC, restaurants

Click on this to learn more. We spent the day at Daufuskie Island this summer. MM's was open for lunch but not between lunch and dinner when we happened upon it. It really is a dive and I wish I could review the food b/c I always heard it was great. We were disapointed we could not eat there at 3 pm...I would recommend taking transportation by the locals who know their way around the island. We rented a golf cart and were lost the entire time but it was fun. Next time we get over there I will be making reservations at night b/c they do have some lively entertainment at that time.

Ketchup on Hot Dogs

I do both ketchup and mustard together. On Hoffmann dogs! The best! But on their Snappys, only brown mustard will do. To each their own.
