Local Produce on Monday near Norfolk?
So I am on my own without fincky son or husband for dinner tonight and thought I might pick up a bunch of fruits & veggies---but Five Points is closed. Anyone know where the closest place to pick up some local produce is on a Monday? I don't want to go to the 'Peake or the Beach today.
Chef and the Farmer (Kinston, NC) - recent experiences?
I had a fabulous meal there a month or so ago. Collard ravioli, yum
Outer banks special dinner
I second the Blue Point but also the Left bank at the Sanderling is wonderful as well.
Blue Point is a comfortable casual atmosphere with fabulous food & wine
The Left Bank is more upscale fine dining in attitude and a gorgeous interior.

TJ's Pumpkin Butter
So I have a jar of this in my pantry...any ideas of a fast appetizer I could throw together with it?
Home cooking with a toddler underfoot
I totallly agree w/giving her utensils to play with. I would put my son in his highchair @ the counter & give him a little red whisk & a bowl-sometimes w/flour in it. Or sometimes just little cups of water to pour back & forth ...or a bit of dough. He used to love to help me in the kitchen but lately (@ 3 1/2) he has no interest--except in pushing the blender buttons. I keep trying to lure him back to cook with me.
Dinner & Breakfast in Corolla or nearby
Hope I am not too late...2 places I have been to with children in town & treated very well and ate well have been Flying Dutchman and Route 12 Steak & Seafood in Tim Buk II a shopping ctr w/several restaurants). I think both have good websites that reflect their menus...but both are pretty traditional for the area--seafood, steaks, etc.... I have also had a good Italian meal at La Dolce VIta w/a toddler. Nice crab pasta.
Metropolis is a good tapas place that is more adult focused & upscale. Also of course Blue Point in Duck is always fabulous
Never had breakfast up there other than in my hotel or the rental house.

Crockpot cocktail party meatballs? Punch Recipe?
Thanks folks---ended up not doing punch but those fruit juice sodas from Trader Joe's....as for the meatballs I bought frozen turkey ones--also from TJs and did a huge bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce and almost a full jar of red pepper jelly. Folks almost licked the crock pot.
Another thing that worked great on the buffet--a friend had give my Mom a panettone (sp?) & another friend always give her this Persian relish/jam with citrus zest in it. So I mixed that w/cream cheese and but it beside the sliced panettone and folks loved it.
Crockpot cocktail party meatballs? Punch Recipe?
Helping my mother throw a holiday open house (afternoon)....the crowd will be seniors, parents, & kids...so I am going kind of conventional/retro with the food what I am looking for is a sauce recipe...you know the tangy-spicy-sweet ones everyboy devours no matter how much of a gourmet they are...Also looking for a punch recipe--she loves to get out her big punch bowl...something other than the conventional lime sherbert?
Looking for a nice restaurant w/in 1 hour of Chincoteague Island, VA
try the Charlotte Hotel in Onancock...wonderful. Also in same town is Bizzotto's
Creamy Feta Sauce?
I ended up making a light Bechamel with feta & lemon...i wanted something warm since it was winter--it was ok but i think in the summer I will do a cold feta-cucumber-tomato-red onion mixture on top and that would be better
Creamy Feta Sauce?
So I made these lamb burgers with spinach & feta mixed in while baby napped and I thought at dinner time i'd serve them with some cous cous on the side and maybe heat them up with an extra dollop of some sort of melty yummy feta goodness on top...so what can should I mix in with the feta to make it a yummy saucy melty cheese dollop?
Jacksonville/Camp Lejeune
I was there 2 weeks ago for work myself and feel for a tiny little place called Aji Ichiban. Good Japanese food and a few Korean dishes as well. I had the bento box with all sorts of yummies. They have sushi as well but I did not try.
Jacksonville, NC /Camp Lejeune area
Ok so the actyal name of the restaurant is Aji Ichiban and I did go and it was delicious. I tried the bent box for lunch which had beef terriyaki, veggie tempura, fish croquettes, rice, soup, & a salad...and I think something else which I have forgotten. It was delicious and enormous. They have a lot of noodle & rice dishes, soups, some curries, and even a few Korean dishes. They also have sushi which I did not try. Very small spot, very friendly, seems to do a lot of take-out.
About Expiration Dates
This whole thread makes me laugh....i am constantly saving food from the trash & trying to explain to my spouse that half the food we refrigerate does not even need to be refrigerated and....the food was created as a way to preserve it....such as bacon! They used to hang it in a smokehouse! Potatoes were stored in basements all winter. Vinegar means bad wine. Many cheeses have mold rinds so don't throw out the whole chunk of cheese just shave it off. Now on the other hand my mother takes it too far & we often joke that she is trying to poison us all...but also making our systems stronger.
Jacksonville, NC /Camp Lejeune area
I am in a hotel in Jacsonville for the week and appreciate the rec for the thai spot....I passed a Japanese place called A Taste of Okinawa....looked small & interesting....anyone been?
Winehouse in Ghent? Norfolk, VA
Anyone been...like it? I went there a few years back twice and was not impressed --found the meny a bit inconsistent & service blah...but I see they have $$$ to move to a better location in this economy so maybe they have gotten better...anyone?
Near the Don?
Thanks all...We ended up having a few drinks at sunset at the poolside bar at the Don-beautiful but of course expensive drinks and then ate at Cafe Luna and loved it. I had the crab & snapper piccata...a wonderful dish & the tomato bisque--yum yum. My husband had a steak that was good-not great. We had breakfast at the Frog Pond on the way out the next morning....good & huge portions. Friendly spot.
Near the Don?
Black Palm...i remember chowhounders had told us of that in the past but little one always gets sick when we go to the in-laws so we have yet to make it on our night away....we'll definitely try 1 of those thanks!
Near the Don?
We will be spending a much needed night away from the baby at the Don. Their restaurant is probably more formal than we are looking for so looking for dinner suggestions (is a Monday night though). We like wine, tapas or interesting apps, fresh seafood, kind of romantic but not over the top. Just a nice little spot to enjoy some quiet time....hopefully a walk or a short drive away.
Scan Pan? or Best Non-Stick Pan?
Thanks pikawicca...that's what I wanted to know if they were worth it...the review I read raved, but then you never know. I'll look into Swiss Diamond or maybe just go to Target and get a cheap one...my last Calphalons last 6 yrs so I guess that is not too bad...
Scan Pan? or Best Non-Stick Pan?
He scrubbed & scrubbed and scrubbed and destroyed the patina. It is now rusted. Yes I could scrub it or or do the paper bag & salt thing & bake it with Crisco again, yadda yadda yadda...but I have a toddler & a job and just don't have the energy to start all over with it again at this time...maybe some other year...for now as the question stated i just want a good non-stick pan
Near the Don?
So we'll be spending a much needed night without the baby at the Don Cesar....our looking for a nice spot for a somewhat romantic dinner nearby. Not sure we want to go quite as formal as the French spot at the Don....we are into red wine, love tapas or appetizer portions, seafood, etc....nice but not too frou frou0which I assume the Maritana Grill is.
Scan Pan? or Best Non-Stick Pan?
So my husband seems on a mission to destroy all our pans...he cannot cook in stainless steel, ruined my cast iron skillert and our teflon pans have recently become to scratched to use....So what is the best non-sitck pan? And Safest? I read a review on the Scan pan & sounded great...anyone out there using this and like it? Or something else they love?
Homemade Chicken Nuggets--Freeze well?
Thanks everyone & I am going to try one of these hopefully this weekend!
Homemade Chicken Nuggets--Freeze well?
My son loves my chicken cutlets so I was thinking of trying to make them more like nuggets & freeze in the vacuum bags for son & hubby when I travel. Has anyone froze them & if so do they do well? I have used breadcrumbs or panko in the past does anyone have another recipe that freezes well?
Razzo in Norfolk (Ocean View)?
Reasonable---in my view---almost everything (except maybe the tuna-market price) was under $20. Probably no entree under $10---maybe they started at $12. Sorry to comapre so much to Zia Marie if you have not been there---it is a nice casual setting--Zia has a lively bar scene while Razzo was more calm in that respect.
Razzo in Norfolk (Ocean View)?
We finally went last Friday and it was delicious. We got there about 8ish and has about a 20 minute wait at the bar. The menu and the mood is very very similar to Zia Marie but the menu has some more unique pastas and dishes than Zia. We started with the caramelized fennel appetizer which was in a creamy cheesy wine sauce-super yum. Then my SO went for his usual veal parmesan--very very good. And I had the grilled tuna wrapped in bacon with a cabernet reduction, side of spinach, and the pasta w/garlic, olive oil, & bread crumbs. Wonderful. The staff & the owner were very friendly. Good casual spot.
