2014 Restaurants and Food Store OPENINGS - Part II

Camp/Fish Camp on Jane north of Bloor, south of Annette, has new owners and is now called Campo.

Bloor West Village restaurants

I went for lunch on a weekend and was underwhelmed. While their breakfast/brunch items at least looked delicious from a few tables over, my veggie burger was crusty (almost burnt) on the outside and a very bland mush on the inside (no seasoning). It also took them a wopping 15 minutes to approach us after we were seated. It looks like their breakfast/brunch menu has changed as well. Previously we'd really enjoyed a dinner so maybe the veggie burger is just a lone dud.

2014 Restaurant and Food Store CHANGES and CLOSINGS

As I understand it, two of the HF that broke off from the others are now called this. Same owners.

Toronto's worst dives

Linsmore, Noah's Ark, and formerly Duffy's (which has cleaned up a bit)...A place called "This Month Only' on Dupont looks pretty dodgy - I've seen incredibly drunk older men crossing from it into the Portuguese bar across the road.

Which is the LOUDEST restaurant in TORONTO??

Hey, this is valid. A trip to Grand Electric made the decent food someone unenjoyable when accompanied by pretty explicit hip hop lyrics that we had to shout over.

Where to buy grits?

They have grits in the Mexican section of the No Frills at Black Creek/Eglinton.

Apple Picking

We were at Orchalaw Farm (run by another member of the Laidlaw family, Carl Laidlaw's was next door) and had a great time (wagon rides to the orchards). There were only a few types of apples left, however, and they thought they'd be done over this weekend.

Cronuts, anyone know if anyone makes them in Canada?

Kind of a shame - this food item, which personally I might try once in my life (can't be good for the diabetes) - got so much press re the CNE and now this happens. My sympathies with the people who got sick and with Epic Burgers - who by all accounts had good health reports. Hope they find the source of the illness.

Still looking for good pizza delivery in the Victoria Park & Eglinton area

have not tried the place on Underhill. Diamond Pizza (Danforth/Main area) might deliver to your area...nothing fancy but generally tasty and good value.

Yikes, I see they're old school, will deliver cigarettes...Pizza Pizza did the same...

Your favourite grocery store in GTA (chain or otherwise?)

Don't knock No Frills too badly. I'm in BWV/Junction and two out of 3 of the closest No Frills seem clean and well staffed - especially the one located at Eglinton and Black Creek - huge store and, let's face it, the same PC Trucks etc that bring food to the Loblaws deliver to the No Frills.

Avec Panache - Junction

Anyone been? I only noticed this place when I saw a show that was filmed there. Reviews on Yelp etc seem favourable (almost too favourable, if that makes sense). This place hasn't shown up on Blogto and the like.

Freshco is just Price Chopper cleaned up a bit and rebranded. Like Food Basics, they advertise as a discount grocer but usually I find that No Frills beats them on most counts. That said, picked up some good t-bones there today (rare to see them there, especially on sale).

Can I ask what's good at Lady York; it's not too far from me and I've been curious about it.

Paula Deen..... Breaking News Part II:

What seems most damning to me in the depositions is that she admitted her brother "acted innapropriately" in both sexual and racial terms. If she knew that she should have canned or suspended him. All of this crying and claiming she didn't know what was offensive and saying she's just an old southern lady is just making it worse.

"What Were They Thinking?" Foods

You beat me to this re the jello/veggie combinations. Stuff like that is the legacy of promotional recipes of the 50's/60's and sadly they are still staples at any church/club potluck. I'd include any Campbell's soup concoctions in this grouping but I actually like most of those (tinned meat plus cream soup plus pasta/rice with some frozen veggies and I'm there, added bonus if it's got some kind of cracker or cereal topping LOL).

I really enjoy Highland Farms too, but alas, it's a bit far away. Fiesta Farms is my local favourite.

Check in - they're still adding more. That site's like a wormhole....not just resto's but lots more. There's also a set of bars/pubs worth looking at. Hours of entertainment/nostalgia.

Diabetic / sugar-free cake

If Grandma's diabetes is under control, she should be able to eat a bit of "normal" cake (this is coming from a diabetic).

As far as I know the store is still there...the name Benix does come to mind but maybe it's changed hands.

Accessible Italian fare in Toronto

I'll add to the recommendation for Marcello's and also add perhaps Lil Baci (only because people keep recommending it to us - I haven't gone there but other Chowhounds will have)
