Groceries in England... cheaper than U.S? Why?

For some reason I find sandwiches to be much, much cheaper in London for the work crowd. It kills me paying $10 for a sandwich here in NYC.

Union Market's prepared food is horrible, just horrible. With seamless these days there is no point for anyone to get prepared food from there where anywhere under the sun with deliver.

I like it, find it fresh and not hard to get in so that is all that matters to me. The poster wanted opinions and that is mine!

Which restaurant have you eaten at the most?

I read in some health blog that crickets are going to be one of the hot, healthy foods for 2015!

What to eat with cottage cheese?

I eat CC all the time. Often I'll mix some libby pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice and a tad of maple syrup. It's delicious and almost a replacement for a more savory pumpkin pie. I also love to add strawberry jam and PB2 (easier to stir) to CC.

TJ's Chocolate Espresso Pillows?

Are you sure it's not the other chocolate they have in similar tins? Can be confusing because the pillows are orange and the other ones are slightly yellow and blue I believe.

TJ's Chocolate Espresso Pillows?

Trader Joes has had their small tins of chocolate espresso pillows for years. The past few weeks all of their NYC stores seem to be out of them. I asked and they said they're not discontinued but on backorder (or something like that). Anyone have more info or seen them around the past week or two in NYC or in other areas of the country?

I don't know the Chipotle you're going to (Allentown, PA??), but nowhere in NYC with the sheer numbers of people they serve--and especially during busy meal times--is going to hold a conversation or remember specific orders of each customer who has been there each time. I wish, though, but only in my fantasyland that would happen at a place like McD's former self, Chipotle.

Groceries in England... cheaper than U.S? Why?

Ferret, seems like you're from Chicago. Trust me, takeaway and prepared foods are cheaper in London (and M&S) than NYC. Us NYCers have lots of prepared options (I'm talking about little shops, WFs, etc), and per lbs for things like cauliflower are ridiculous ($14/lbs), for example.

It's important, though, if looking at London to stack it against a comparable city, like NYC/SF, and not a cheaper city like Seattle or Chicago.

Groceries in England... cheaper than U.S? Why?

Having lived in both London and NYC (among some other US cities, I have found the UK to be much cheaper at grocery stores, especially produce. The freshness is usually of higher quality too. In addition, grabbing a takeout lunch of a sandwich or salad is cheaper in London as well. In NYC it can run you $10-12 for a sandwich/salad. In London it's less than that with great options at M&S!

I get why us NYers like to go back to the same places once in a while (but repeats I sometimes feel bad about because there are so many options), but if I was a visitor I'd want to check out new places at every meal!

Let's get real, what's the real difference between WF and Chipotle? It's both pre-made stuff, not made--to-order. One you're having someone else assemble and in the other you're doing it yourself.

Park Slope Gems

I know this is an old post, but thought I would make some comments. For sushi Kiku and Sushi Katsueiare great among some other ones in the neighborhood.

Union Market isn't what it used to be. Their prices are horribly over-priced, and why would anyone choose to go there now when there are a number of other gourmet markets in the neighborhood that are considerably less money for the same products. Whole Foods has come to the neighborhood, and it looks like the dollar store compared to Union Market. The only thing somewhat reasonable there is their olive bar.

NuNu Chocolates bakery just opened up recently on 5th Ave. Instead of going to Union, you can go to Du Jour, Blue Sky, Buttermilk, Lady Bird, Colson Patisserie, L’Albero, Cousin John's, etc.

For markets, try Whole Foods, Park Slope’s Down to Earth Farmers Market, D’ Vine Taste, Blue Apron Foods, BKLYN Larder, Ivy Garden, etc.

I won't even begin on the long list of some of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood!

Some of the places I have frequented quite often are Westville, Vermicelli, Whole Foods salad bar and Hale and Hearty (just being honest) for a quick lunch during my lunch hour

Funny enough, I tried both Ootoya and Kori for the first time this week. Heard the former was awesome, and was a little disappointed. Kori was just okay as well. Maybe I didn't order well.

Former Washingtonian Needs Advice

I lived in DC for over six years...left early last winter. Over the past 1.5 years it seems a ton of new, hip, cool and delicious places have sprung up. Coming back for three days this week for a work trip (on an expense account but like to be reasonable and avoid majorly $$$ meals). Please suggest some new places that have opened up recently in the NW area (Dupont, Chinatown/Penn Quarter, U St, Logan, etc.). I now live in NYC if this put things in perspective about the access to the types of restaurants I regularly have access to. I'm looking for some places to meet friends with for dinner and some more low key lunch spots that are healthy (good salads and can be fast casual--like Sweetgreen). Thanks!

A veggie side to go with meatloaf cupcakes for April Fools?

To go with the theme, how about a "frosting" of mashed cauliflower?

TJ's Kale & Spinach Greek Yogurt Dip

Be careful with this as a snack. While it's "healthy" in moderation, the whole tub has around 500 calories!

I tried it in canned salmon, which is also tasty. I also put it on toast with avocado and separately with hard boiled egg whites one toast.

South African

I'm trying to give a friend who lives in NYC a taste from home. Where can one find some South African delicacies/bakery items/candy/food AND a large selection of South African wine (have found that most wine shops have maybe 2-5 tops of each a red and a white). Thanks

Food shopping in Fort Greene?

Yes, they are slightly bigger there but their selection has not changed much. This place is definitely not a place to do a "regular" weekly grocery shop at.

Was considering a move there as well, but for this reason i ended up in Park Slope. Pathmark isn't really close to prime Ft. Greene or at least when it's cold/carrying bags.

TJ's Kale & Spinach Greek Yogurt Dip

Love this newish product from Trader Joe's. Besides the obvious dipping of chips, veggies (and whatever else you dip), what are some other uses for this dip? I was thinking it might be good as the "cheese" of a homemade pizza or quesadilla. Other ideas or what are some healthy ways you use the dip?

What is with the smell at Subway??

I always thought it was the bread and some chemical reaction with a preservative once the dough was baked. However, I have traveled all over the world--six continents--and Subways are everywhere. That smell is at every one, and each country I know has different rules and regulations on the types of preservatives that can go into food. So I wonder if that smell comes from somewhere else. It's strange...

Birthday dinner near DC Convention Center?

While I really like Corduroy, I wonder if a 1 year old's celebration might be more fun at a place like Aggain. Corduroy may be a little too serene.
