Where to find the best crispy charred brussel sprouts

Looks like you want fried not roasted...is that correct?

I personally have a difficult time ordering fried veggies...might as well order french fired given it's about the same amount of calories!

Buvette

I've been there before for just drinks at the bar and a meal. The atmosphere is cute but not when you see a huge line waiting, takes away part of the charm. I agree, go at a very off time. The food is pretty good but nothing mind blowing. Good looking wait staff though. :)

I cannot eat "strangers'" food

I don't have this problem but I can see where you are coming from. At a restaurant you know there are certain cleanliness procedures/standards. Here in NYC they are very, very strict about it and have letter grades. You have no idea if people washed their hands, the food, and how the state of their kitchen is. At work potlucks let's just say I stay away from certain coworkers' food because I can assume they aren't the cleanest people. I have a friend who is in the same boat as you in terms of never eating other people's food.

Your Favorite EASY Recipes

Cut up chicken sausages (my fave is TJ's jalapeno flavor) and throw in a pan until they begin to get browned and warm (a few minutes). Throw in lots of spinach and a little bit of salt, pepper and garlic and include either a can of chopped tomatoes or about 1/2-1 cup of your favorite pasta sauce. Turn on low to wilt spinach and warm up tomatoes/sauce and stir mixture for a few minutes. Plate and sprinkle a little parmesan cheese on it. This takes me all of 5 minutes from start to finish, seriously. It's fast, healthy and delicious.

Baked Eggs with Kale, Portobellos, and Feta

Here's why I gave it one star. I calculated the calories and something that should be relatively healthy came out to 600 calories PER SERVING! There is a lot of unnecessary fat included in this dish. Little tweaks and reductions could bring this down significantly (use Pam to spray dish, reduce amount of butter, use skim milk instead of heavy cream, etc).

Best cottage cheese? I vote for Friendship (no salt added)

I'm a cottage cheese-phene. Eat the stuff at least once a day, no joke. I have also lived all over the US and in a few countries abroad. I have to say the best brands are IMO definitely 1% Friendship (not the whip nor the no slat added variety), Daisy 2%, Meijer's 1% and Safeway brand'd copy of Friendship's 1%. Croatia also makes some awesome packaged cottage cheese.

Do a search for this. There has been many, many past threads on it. Here's a teaser: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/3364...

Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

I love me Levain and Jaques but you're not always around those shops to pick one up. We get a lot of catering in my office, and I have to say, the chocolate chip cookies from Au Bon Pain and Metro Cafe are quite delicious as well as the oatmeal chocolate chip cookie from Potbelly's. Who knows what they put in the stuff but tasty!

Breads bakery's chocolate babka, when fresh from the oven, is pure heaven

This stuff is pure carby crack in the most delicious way possible! Breads also make this amazing granola-type roll.

Does anyone know if you can get Bulletproof Coffee in coffee shops? Or is that something you can only make at home?

Great question regardless if you're a working mom and have no time. I don't want to invest in all the ingredients before trying it out. If anyone has heard of nay of the coffee shops that make it (to the T) in Manhattan or Brooklyn, please let us know!

What did you/would you eat the morning of your wedding?

Why wouldn't she just have her normal breakfast if she normally feels fine after it? Like most others have said, don't mess with a good thing on your wedding day. Also, have some almonds handy for right before and even after the ceremony. Who knows when the bride will be able to eat again.

Groceries in England... cheaper than U.S? Why?

For some reason I find sandwiches to be much, much cheaper in London for the work crowd. It kills me paying $10 for a sandwich here in NYC.

Park Slope Gems

Union Market's prepared food is horrible, just horrible. With seamless these days there is no point for anyone to get prepared food from there where anywhere under the sun with deliver.

What to eat with cottage cheese?

I eat CC all the time. Often I'll mix some libby pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice and a tad of maple syrup. It's delicious and almost a replacement for a more savory pumpkin pie. I also love to add strawberry jam and PB2 (easier to stir) to CC.

TJ's Chocolate Espresso Pillows?

Are you sure it's not the other chocolate they have in similar tins? Can be confusing because the pillows are orange and the other ones are slightly yellow and blue I believe.

TJ's Chocolate Espresso Pillows?

Trader Joes has had their small tins of chocolate espresso pillows for years. The past few weeks all of their NYC stores seem to be out of them. I asked and they said they're not discontinued but on backorder (or something like that). Anyone have more info or seen them around the past week or two in NYC or in other areas of the country?

Which restaurant have you eaten at the most?

I don't know the Chipotle you're going to (Allentown, PA??), but nowhere in NYC with the sheer numbers of people they serve--and especially during busy meal times--is going to hold a conversation or remember specific orders of each customer who has been there each time. I wish, though, but only in my fantasyland that would happen at a place like McD's former self, Chipotle.

Groceries in England... cheaper than U.S? Why?

Ferret, seems like you're from Chicago. Trust me, takeaway and prepared foods are cheaper in London (and M&S) than NYC. Us NYCers have lots of prepared options (I'm talking about little shops, WFs, etc), and per lbs for things like cauliflower are ridiculous ($14/lbs), for example.

It's important, though, if looking at London to stack it against a comparable city, like NYC/SF, and not a cheaper city like Seattle or Chicago.

Groceries in England... cheaper than U.S? Why?

Having lived in both London and NYC (among some other US cities, I have found the UK to be much cheaper at grocery stores, especially produce. The freshness is usually of higher quality too. In addition, grabbing a takeout lunch of a sandwich or salad is cheaper in London as well. In NYC it can run you $10-12 for a sandwich/salad. In London it's less than that with great options at M&S!

Which restaurant have you eaten at the most?

I get why us NYers like to go back to the same places once in a while (but repeats I sometimes feel bad about because there are so many options), but if I was a visitor I'd want to check out new places at every meal!

Let's get real, what's the real difference between WF and Chipotle? It's both pre-made stuff, not made--to-order. One you're having someone else assemble and in the other you're doing it yourself.

Park Slope Gems

I know this is an old post, but thought I would make some comments. For sushi Kiku and Sushi Katsueiare great among some other ones in the neighborhood.

Union Market isn't what it used to be. Their prices are horribly over-priced, and why would anyone choose to go there now when there are a number of other gourmet markets in the neighborhood that are considerably less money for the same products. Whole Foods has come to the neighborhood, and it looks like the dollar store compared to Union Market. The only thing somewhat reasonable there is their olive bar.

NuNu Chocolates bakery just opened up recently on 5th Ave. Instead of going to Union, you can go to Du Jour, Blue Sky, Buttermilk, Lady Bird, Colson Patisserie, L’Albero, Cousin John's, etc.

For markets, try Whole Foods, Park Slope’s Down to Earth Farmers Market, D’ Vine Taste, Blue Apron Foods, BKLYN Larder, Ivy Garden, etc.

I won't even begin on the long list of some of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood!

Funny enough, I tried both Ootoya and Kori for the first time this week. Heard the former was awesome, and was a little disappointed. Kori was just okay as well. Maybe I didn't order well.
