your fave vegetarian/vegan spot in or near Kensington Market?

Yeah in the end I couldn't even deal with the leftovers. I HATE throwing food out, but it really wasn't palatable. I also realized that the lack of garlic really affects the flavour (and I'm with you on less/better quality).

Is the Burger Bar the same people who had the Rice Bar? If so I won't be going. The Rice Bar was the biggest rip off. I posted somewhere else here that when I ordered the vegan stew I got a large container of plain rice with about 2 tbsp of stew on top. It wasn't cheap either. Never went back.

The Burger Bar menu does have some interesting things on it though...Hmmm...maybe I will give them a chance.

Hunting for Specific Vegan Items

I can confirm this as I just bought some last week. Prefer the curry marinated ones though :)

OK FINALLY tried this place out. I'd been meaning to for years. The portion sizes are MASSIVE. I wish I checked back here to remind myself of that. I got a couple of dishes because I wanted some dinner for tonight too - well I've got dinner, plus breakfast, lunch and dinner tomorrow as well. I ordered the Singapore curry noodles, the mixed veg on fried noodles (with tofu added) and the imitation duck. Not loving the imitation duck, but it's ok. Overall the food is "OK" but I was expecting more quality I think. My veggies are totally swimming in a congealed liquid (I have to pour it off to get it home) and honestly, they're pretty bland looking - it's a really beige dish. It needs more broccoli, bok choy, carrot, snow peas etc. i.e. mixed veg. The Singapore noodles are ok, but I didn't realize they would be just noodles. Again, was hoping for some veg. All in all I probably won't go back because it's fairly out of the way for me. Glad I tried it (and I will eat the leftovers) but I'm looking for more "fresher" (brighter, less or no congealed sauce) food.

Need recommendations quick - good restaurants in Bloor West Village?

Also in case they want pub food, which of the many are the best?

Need recommendations quick - good restaurants in Bloor West Village?

Got some friends coming on short notice and they want to eat in Bloor West Village or close. The Junction would be ok too. I don't eat out often so I don't know where to take them. Do people have recommendations for really consistently good restaurants? I can't get what cuisine they want to eat, so I'm guessing anything goes. Thanks in advance!

best thai in the Junction/High Park area (that delivers)?

ordered from Baan Thai and won't be ordering again. Sigh. Sigh...

Got the fresh rolls, veggie papaya salad, veggie pad thai and coconut rice. Underwhelmed.

Maybe the meat dishes are better.

best thai in the Junction/High Park area (that delivers)?

I have a craving for thai food, but every time I try a new place in the area I'm so disappointed. I can't even remember what places I've tried before (Simply Thai in Bloor West is terrible, not fond of the Green Mango by Runnymede either) but does anyone have tried and true recommendations? I'm looking for a great fresh roll. I've also tried the Friendly Thai on Dundas West and I don't remember being impressed. Is Young Thailand gone? I've read reviews but get the impression it's gone?

your fave vegetarian/vegan spot in or near Kensington Market?

It's not the service so much which I can overlook...the food's been a real letdown and the portion size I got last time for the cost was laughable. I thought I was in Rice Bar for a minute there (I once paid a lot at Rice Bar for a large container of steamed rice with about 2 tbsp of vegan stew on top...no wonder they're out of business).

Any vegetarian/vegan places near York University?

I have some friends coming from out of town and they will be attending a workshop type thing at York U...are there any good veggie/vegan options nearby? I've never been in the area myself. Thanks!

Just wondering what peoples' favourite vegetarian restaurant (with vegan options, or all vegan) is in or near Kensington Market. I have a couple I go to but I'd like to hear other opinions.

Great desserts/puddings for two people?

These Baked Lemon Custards are beautiful. It makes enough for 6 small ramekins, I can never eat only one :P Super easy to put together as well.

Margaret Atwood's Baked Lemon Custard

As the batter bakes, it separates into two distinctive layers — cake on top and custard on the bottom.

Cook's Illustrated website worth subscribing to?

Just wondered if people here think that this website is worth the money? Especially interested in hearing whether or not the recipes are consistently good? I don't know a lot about CI, but have come across references to recipes etc. and am curious.

Is there anything that makes this website stand out above others?

Good and not so good comments welcome.

What's your favourite quick breakfast recipe?

I felt kind of stupid asking this question, but there are so many delicious sounding ideas here that I wouldn't have thought of. Thanks everyone!

What's your favourite quick breakfast recipe?

"Scoop a bagel, sprinkle a little cheddar/jack (low-fat if preferred), toast til golden, then fill with some low or non-fat cottage cheese and salsa."

Great idea Emme! I love the idea of scooping out the bready part of the bagel. I'd fill it with one of the egg "muffins" from above. Will try this for sure.

thanks for the tip about the steel-cut oats. I want to try the baked oatmeal (when I saw the pic in your link that's definitely not what I pictured baked oatmeal to look like!) and I love steel-cut oats. Looking forward to trying the recipe.

What's your favourite quick breakfast recipe?

Love the scrambled eggs muffins idea especially if they can be frozen (husband doesn't do breakfast so I have to watch amounts made). I will definitely be looking those up. Going to look up some baked oatmeal recipes too...sounds like something I'd like but I'm not familiar with it.

What's your favourite quick breakfast recipe?

I found out the hard way about rinsing quinoa lol, so I'm very thorough with it now. I still find it has a certain taste that I don't like on it's own. I do like to eat though since it's so healthy.

What's your favourite quick breakfast recipe?

I really like the texture of quinoa but the taste needs to be "masked" a little...does anyone have a really good sweet quinoa porridge recipe? I've only had it in savoury recipes.

What's your favourite quick breakfast recipe?

You're right...I wrote that last night while dreading thinking about what to have in the morning (right now I'm eating leftover manicotti from last night lol). I do a lot of eggs (but kind of same old same old - boiled or quick omelet type recipe), toast, cereal with yoghurt. I hate those days I don't get something together and then I end up getting a bagel at work. I prefer it to be savoury with a good amount of protein, but I do like oatmeal in the winter (found a thread last night on that) if I can get my act together. Anything up to 10 mins would be doable.

I'm looking for some inspiration. I find myself often rushed in the morning (who doesn't?) but I still want a good, healthy breakfast. I also don't eat meat though I do eat eggs and dairy.

Best Lentil Recipe?

This is one of my ALL TIME favourite soups. Such wonderful flavours, so garlicky :) I make it often and never get tired of it.

Greek Red Lentil Soup

2 Tbsp olive oil
1 onion, chopped
8 garlic cloves, chopped
2 carrots, coarsely chopped
1 tsp coarsely ground black pepper
1/4 tsp hot pepper flakes
2 Tbsp chopped fresh or 1 Tbsp dried oregano
1 Tbsp chopped fresh rosemary or thyme leaves (optional)
2 cups red lentils, rinsed, drained (dry not canned)
8 cups vegetable stock
3-4 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
salt and pepper to taste
1 cup crumbled feta cheese (I used the light kind)
Chopped fresh parsley

Heat oil in large heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat.

Add onion; cook stirring about 5 minutes or until soft. Add garlic, carrots, black pepper, red pepper flakes, oregano and rosemary or thyme (if using); cook, stirring, about 2 minutes more.

Add lentils and stock. Bring to boil over high heat; reduce heat to low and simmer, partially covered, until lentils are soft and falling apart, about 15 to 20 minutes.

Add lemon juice, salt and pepper. Serve hot, sprinkled with feta and chopped parsley.

Need a signature dessert! Can I steal yours?

I just finished baking the two lemon loaves and since I had some lemons and buttermilk left over I tried this recipe that I had bookmarked a while ago

http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/foo...

Great result! Lovely lemony flavour and it's really cool the way the custard separates from the light cakey top. I'm bringing these tonight too, but of course I couldn't wait and had to try one for myself.

jsaimd those lemon bars look amazing. I find lemon brightens up the coldest winter days!
