I also heard it as, "if the good Lord's willing, and the crick don't rise", so I always thought it meant if we are able to get out on the road because of rising water.

I use my avocado green, 46 year old one the same way. Fry chicken outside, and keep the heat and grease spatters out of the kitchen.

The Dinnerhorn in Portsmouth: an appreciation

We were there a few years ago, and enjoyed it too. I remember the two rolls served to us were excellent. I mentioned that to our server, hoping to get another, but that didn't happen.
In an area where parking is difficult, their parking is more than adequate.

I like my microplane grater. It is wonderful for garlic, and Parmesan cheese. I don't like big pieces of garlic in my food, so this is perfect for grating garlic. It goes right in the dishwasher, too.

Stereotypical Atlanta Foods for party

I was about ready to suggest cheese straws. As an OLD southerner, serve, Cocola. Not coca cola. And yes, I have asked "what kind of Coke would you like"? That means, what type of soda would you like?

Coconut cake is also southern. I second a trip to Mary Mac's. I haven't been there in a while. It is time to return. Oh, they call hot dogs with mustard " Yankee dogs" at the Varsity. Something about the yellow stripe down the middle...

Last time we were at Costco, they were pushing three bean salad, and they had added a small macaroni to it. With that idea, you could certainly add artichoke hearts, and whatever else appealed.

Hot Dogs... Grilled, Boiled, Steamed... or really?... Microwaved?

I can't believe nobody has mentioned cole slaw on hot dogs. A little mustard, a fair amount of slaw. Excellent!

Also, if you want sauerkraut, then, cook a bunch of bone in pork chops with a lot of kraut. It will take a few hours to cook down the chops until they fall off the bone. That is dinner number one. Then use the excess kraut on your hot dog. That is fine eating.

Pie help

I use two cans of cherries. I leave out much of the gooey non cherry sweet stuff. The
trick...a bit of almond extract. That makes it taste more intensely of cherries.

How to eat frugally?

I find that a can of soup will stretch with jarred bouillon. I usually put some extra left over chicken in, too. Pork would work as well. We make a nice lunch out of a can of soup with leftover chicken, some water and the jarred bouillon. I am a bouillon nut. I use it to make gravy go farther, and that way I can have enough for another meal...pot roast cut up into chunks and cooked in gravy...yum. Add the veggies you like.

That left over pot roast is even better and more tender when cooked again. I cook for two, so a pot roast is more doable. Maybe you and a neighbor could eat together?

Is it difficult to convert from 32" to 36" cooktop?

Measure the cabinet below the cook top. If it is 36 or close, there should be no problem. Yes, you will have to cut the counter top.
Stock cabinets come every three inches. The cook top will have a bit of an over hang. Take your measurements, and maybe a snap shot to your local appliance store.

What tools do you take when you travel?

I always travel with Splenda, and a champagne keeper, for when you want to save half the bottle. Also cheap throw away plastic glasses. You know they are clean, and you can wash them or not, after your happy hour.

In the U.S., I do bring ice cube trays, paper plates, and salt and pepper from the fast food places.

Easy things to prep/eat while on crutches

I forgot to add...my husband did all the shopping. I didn't eat chocolate at all for weeks. I got sick when I finally bought some. So...buy yourself some now, so you will have a stash. Make it a large stash. :)

dutch ovens vs. slow cookers

Meat can be browned in a slow cooker before low and slow cooking. You can't really brown meat in a slow cooker. Maybe?

Easy things to prep/eat while on crutches

Years ago I had a broken foot. My best friends were a stool, and a robe with pockets. You take a waist high stool, and use it like a walker, lift it forward, lean on it, walk with one foot, push forward again. Midstride, sit on it to rest. Go to refrigerator, grab a soda, or water, put in the pocket of your robe, and go back to your chair. Obviously, use the stool to sit on in front of the stove. Best of luck.

Lent Starts One Week From Today

It has been awhile...but the forty days of Lent refer to the forty days of wandering in the desert/wilderness. Sundays don't count as Lent. Don't believe me? Count the days on the calendar.
Shrove Tuesday/Fat Tuesday /Mardi Gras is when you use up all the fats in the house, and the syrup.

The Thursday before Good Friday was called Maundy Thursday.

Oh, Ash Wednesday...the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday were burned, and their ashes were used on the forehead.

Need input on a natural gas grill

Have had a natural gas grill for at least 45 years. I like one with a post. It doesn't take up as much visual space. Don't know where you live or if you have air conditioning. I would like one with a side burner. If you can get one so that one side heats up, and the other side doesn't, you can bake in it. I have used ours even in the snow. It takes longer to heat up though. :)

You can always tell if the flame blew out in the rain, because the top is wet. As long as it is dry and steaming in the rain, you are good to go. As I age, I am more reluctant to walk through the ice to get to it. Hope it is fairly close to the house, or an overhang. I have done some nice contemplating as I sit on the steps by the grill, and wait to turn a burger or steak.

what do you put on your cottage cheese?

I can't believe nobody eats it the way I do...chopped onions and ground pepper. Excellent!

Mom isn't eating well any suggestions?

I feel for you. I took care of my MIL and found she would eat soft food. So I made lots of spaghetti, and mashed potatoes and gravy. Her teeth were fine, but she still liked easy to eat food. She loved sweets, too. Cake was always a hit.

Hard boiled Eggs in Gravy

I grew up in the south, middle Ga. and Atlanta. Never saw eggs in gravy. Giblets, yes. Mom would buy extra chicken livers to make chicken gravy sometimes. If not, then she would cook the neck and heart, liver, and gizzard to make stock, then cut up the meat for gravy, or dressing. The gizzard was fed to the dog. :)

Oh, if you do stop there, it is pronounced like Stanton.

Also, if you take a little detour either coming or going, go to the Dillard House in Dillard, Ga. It is on route 23 a little south of the South Carolina border. You can look it up on the Internet. It has been around forever, and the food is very good. They bring you food until you say "uncle". Great fried chicken, and try the country ham.

Driving from MA - GA

In our twenties we drove straight through from Ct. to Atlanta. We vowed never to do it again. And...we never have. Please make a stop. We then stopped in Staunton, Va. Exit 222 on route 81, many times. When we did the straight through, the last 200 miles were a blur.

Staunton has many motels right off the exit, and several places to eat. Not fine dining, but okay to good.

Solo Thanksgiving

Many years ago when I had to spend Thanksgiving alone, with my dog, I made a turkey and most of the fixings. Since it was just me, I just threw the dressing together. Well...it was the best I have ever made! I enjoyed watching the parade, and chopping vegetables like I always did, and it really felt like Thanksgiving.

Current (11/14) gas range recommendations?

I have the new Samsung chefs collection, all gas. $2799.00, but you can get the at 10% off sometimes at Home Depot, Sears, etc. it has a 19,000 btu right front burner with a wok thing if you want to use it, and it goes down to a low simmer. The right back burner is only for simmering. Middle griddle burner, left front is a normal high burner, and left rear is normal low.

HUGE oven. With one shelf with ball bearings. I like it very much. It just hit the market here last month. I think Samsung did well in the last Consumer reports, too.

I have the gas model from the Samsung chef collection. Just installed. Love it so far. The oven is huge. Lower drawer is small, but a warming drawer. 19,000 btu front right burner. Takes getting used to. Middle grill. Plus it has a plug in thermometer for the oven. 30"

I am from the south, and what you made is exactly the way my mom always made it. It would puddle around the bottom. Boy was it good! Mom put it on a spice cake. Of course, the recipe is gone, now.
