Squash Blossoms

I don't know why it never occurred to me to buy a plant and harvest the blossoms. Thanks for the link.

Squash Blossoms

Has anyone every tried to buy them and, if so, where?

Eating potato products makes you ... (wait for it) ... FAT!

It is not just "basic science,'" it's model building with the assumption "all other things being equal." Which we have no way of knowing

98-year-old needs to gain weight, doesn't eat enough: Food suggestions

It sounds like one of the major problems is how much she can eat at one time. For people who are on chem or have had bariatric surgery, the recommendation is eat a little bit every two hours. There are a couple of sites that have food recommendation and recipes. One of the ones a friend used was http://bariatriceating.com/BErecipes/

Is father willing to do the every two hours routine or can you package small amounts in something like food saver bags so all she has to do is throw a half cup of delicious soup or mac and cheese into the microwave.

Good luck with your grandmother. It sounds like the two of your have a tender relationship.

I will. This is my week to get everything done before chemo starts, so I'll zip over to your blog and get the recipe. Thanks

Good suggestion, im_nomad. Straga sounded so much like the perfect food I just went to buy a new supply of food saver bags. I don't suppose this is a good time to recycle bags which always seems gross in the best of times.

I kind of assume if people say "let me know if you need anything," that is the equivalent to "Hope you're feeling better soon."

That is very impressive! Isn't it amazing how very involved and loving people can be. You kind of know it's there, but then all of the sudden it's right in front of you.

Hope the week-end passes quickly and you're feeling better more quickly than you expect.

Every 3rd week x6 and then another round, ever 2nd week x4. How did today's treatment go?

Glass for sure. Especially with vacuum seal tops.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you. What kind of pop cycles do you favor during treatment?

Half way done sounds like a good place to be. Following the present value theory, I'm stuffing in all the burgers available over the next week. I feel like a bear, getting ready for winter.

Thank you, Dairy Queen! I'm starting chemo next week and I'm making pomegranate gelatin this week-end so it's waiting for me in the fridge. This thread has been a joy. Thank you all.

Peanut Butter and Pickle sandwich

I came across this by accident and almost fell off my chair. Peanut butter and pickles are my go-to food whenever I have a particularly long project that requires food on the quick for days on end. They are perfectly wonderful.

Persian Cooking

A luscious sounding recipe for Orange Khoresh was posted as a side-bar to a piece of Persian cooking. It calls for a spice mix advieh. Any idea where to find it in the Northern Virginia area?

Yes, you're absolutely right, a dry sherry does work well. Although sometimes the taste of the sherry comes through rather strongly. I some times use Lustau dry amontillado, but I finished it off a couple of months ago and haven't replaced that either. Next trip to Pearson's, I'll stock up. Thanks for the reminder.

I can visualize the block, but I can't remember the name either. The roads are better today and I can check out Bangkok 54 -- although I've never seen it there -- on my way to the Popeye block. Thank you.

Oh, yes. Sorry. I tend to think of NOVA in terms of zip codes. 22305 is Del Ray -- and it's just along the Alexandria/Arlington line. I don't want the cooking variety of Shao Xing. It's salted and it's really kind of nasty. The last time I bought it, I think I found it at a liquor store on Connecticut Avenue. I was thinking there might be something along Columbia Pike.

The roads are still only partially plowed, so I'm looking for a fairly certain source of Shao Xing close to the 22305 zip of Northern VA. Any recommendations?

The Livorno

Addendum to my last comment. I just followed the internet trail to the source of the recipe -- Aida Mollenkamp -- and ended up with the name of her agent. There really should be a way to follow up on postings.

Yes, drink sounds yummy, but I'd love to know something about the glassware. Anyone involved in the photography session out there?

Browning bones on stovetop for stock

I crave an induction cooktop. I understand they are able to maintain an even temperature, rather like that of a thermostatically controlled oven. This sounds like a great reason for getting one. Has anybody used them for a controlled cooking environment?

Miso soup recipe

The original recipe calls for 1-1/2 cups of bonito flakes. Bonito flakes come in very small packages. About how many ounces is 1-1/2 cups? And where is a good place to buy them in Northern Virginia?

ISO: The Quintessential Floridian Cookbook

There is The Florida Cookbook, authors Jeanne Voltz and Caroline Stuart, published by Knopf in 2003. A Floridian gave it to me for Christmas a couple of years ago so I could learn about Cuban bread.

Coriander Root

I've been so taken with Super H, I'd forgotten about Duangrat's grocery. If I find it there, or any place else, this week-end I'll post where.

Coriander Root

Does anyone have a source for coriander root in the DC/Virginia area? Of all the Thai ingredients, this is the hardest one to find when the garden isn't in operation.

Thanks,

Diane
