I want to make Brisket, but I don't have the time... Alternatives?
The excellent cookbook "Jewish Festival Cooking" by Phyllis and Miriam Glazer has a recipe called "Nostalgic Pastrami" that calls for, as I recall, two ingredients: a 4-5 lb pastrami, and a large can of crushed pineapple. I think you pour the pineapple over the pastrami and bake at a low temperature for a couple of hours. It promises sweet-savory, tender meat with a nicely browned crust. I haven't tried it yet, but I plan to one of these days. If even the unattended time in the oven is prohibitive, it seems like the sort of thing one could reasonably cook ahead of time and warm before dinner -- not ideal, but we do what we can.... Good luck with your menu, and Happy Hanukkah!
Treats to send to Iraq
If he likes Indian food, you can buy foil packets of different types of daal, vegetable curries, etc., that are shelf-stable. They sell some at Trader Joe's and many more at Indian markets, or you can get them online (I think one big brand is Tasty Bite). They are good at room temperature if no heating element is available. Spicy and ethnic food can be hard to come by at the chow hall and in MREs, and thanks to the generosity of good friends and family at home, I pretty much lived on Indian food for the better part of my seven months in Iraq (the fresh wares of an Iraqi bread baker to whom we had access complemented the curries really well). Good luck with the care package!
Sunday brunch near Redlands (moved from L.A. board)
Try Martha Greene's in Redlands. www.allmarthagreen.com. The menu features good standard brunch fare, and the restaurant offers friendly service, a nice homey atmosphere, and quite good food. Ambiance is definitely nicer than a coffee shop, but nowhere near as fancy or formal as Mission Inn. The attached bakery has great offerings as well, and you can get their pastries and breads with brunch.
Good upscale restaurants near Texas Medical Center?
Thanks very much -- these suggestions are all very helpful. Much appreciated!
Good upscale restaurants near Texas Medical Center?
Hello Texans,
Some Houston friends of ours have a very sick child, and they are spending a lot of time at Texas Children's Hospital. We would like to get them a gift certificate for a delicious and nice dinner someplace not terribly far from the hospital. Unfortunately, I don't know their food tastes, but we would like to treat them to a very very good meal -- I suppose something with a broad menu or widespread appeal, i.e. French, Italian, etc., might be safest. I do not know Houston at all, so any recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks for any help you can give.
The odd cravings and dislikes of a pregnant woman [Moved from General Topics board]
Congrats! I am about ten weeks along with my first pregnancy and am also fascinated by this topic. Early on, I constantly craved fish in any form, particularly grilled salmon. That eventually subsided and I now find myself obsessed with banh mi (Vietnamese sandwiches) and gazpacho. Not necessarily together, although I would not turn it down. I suspect that I soon will be in the market for a new craving to replace the gazpacho obsession when these beautiful late-summer tomatoes go out of season.
Good luck, and happy eating!
