Recommendations for great restaurants on the Big Island in Hawaii?

We are staying at the Hilton on Waikolea in March. This will be our second visit and we plan to revisit a few restaurants( Mi's,Browns and Sansei come to mind) but we are interested in hearing about others we should be considering. I am just beginning to investigate online to see what Trip Adviser,Urban Spoon and Open Table are recommending. I have found some great restaurants through Chow Hound so thought I'd check in here as well!

Recommendations for great restaurants on the Big Island in Hawaii?

We are travelling to The Big a Island for two weeks and are in Honolulu for one week and are looking for some tips on where to dine! We will have a car and are interested in both fine dining and casual suggestions. We love to try new places and luckily have no dietary restrictions. Thanks for any recommendations!

Barbados Dining?

Don't stay at an all inclusive in Barbados!!There are so many wonderful restaurants all around the island. We just returned and went back to some old favorites-Pisces.The Cliff,The Tides,Daphnes, and Cafe Luna. We are never disappointed with the fare here, but they can seem pricey.I have to remember that so much of their food is imported so I guess it is reasonable to expect to pay top dollar.
The Cliff is a dining experience and there is the wow factor that you won't soon forget, but expect to pay for it!!The others are a little more reasonable but don't expect to save money at any of the above.
A special treat if you want to experience old Barbados and traditional food is the Fisherpond Great House.Cash only here though and it would be difficult to find, so a taxi may be your best bet.We went for the buffet lunch on Sunday and it was truly memorable. Also I must mention the beautiful setting-an old plantation house where you are treated to a visual treat-i cannot adequately describe this so check it out if you can1
We tried the new Cin Cin by the Sea and will definitely return when we go to Barbados again. Also experienced Caribe for the first time and can highly recommend it.
If you are travelling with children.don't be afraid to take them with you. They are most welcome in Barbados.
Have a wonderful time!!!

Fagor Futuro Pressure Cooker

I bought mine from fastcooking and would recommend them.I had no trouble with payment-just followed their directions -and it arrived at my door three days later.

Pressure cookers- which brand and model should I buy?

I also came to the conclusion that the Fagor 4 and 6 litre pressure cooker combo was the best choice for me.I have thoroughly enjoyed cooking under pressure and found that most things taste better than done traditionally.(I now understand though, why there were many out there who felt that anything under 6 litres was too small. The fill line seems to be reached very quickly so anyone cooking for a large family might want to consider a larger cooker!)

Dining on The Big Island of Hawaii

We are just getting ready to leave the Big Island for Maui and thought I'd share a few great spots with anyone planning a vacation.

No problems finding great food here.I would highly recommend a place for lunch called the Coffee Shack in Kealakekua which is south of Kona on the Mamalahoa Highway. We were travelling to see the Captain Cook monument and happened upon a very busy parking lot!!Stopped in and had the best pizza I have ever tasted-(crust was phenomenal)They are located on a hill overlooking the ocean and everything served was delicious.

In the same neck of the woods was a wonderful little Italian restaurant called MI's. Four of us had different entrees and all were very happy with our meals.(I still think that mine was the best-veal piccata-delicious!)The chef (co-owner with the manager, his wife)visited his patrons and shared the history of this little gem while preparing meals.Reservations are a must as there are only ten or twelve tables and I can't imagine them not being full every night.

We ventured north to Hawi and tried sushi at Sushi Rock. They serve some very unique dishes here.We really enjoyed everything we tasted and would love to have had the opportunity to return.
The Bamboo House was located in the same little town and we had a wonderful lunch.Try the pork ribs!

Browns Beach House at the Fairmont was a real treat.Expensive but really first class.Service was amazing and the meal equally great. If you are looking for a very special evening, this is the place to go.

The KPC restaurant in the Hilton complex at Waikoloa has wonderful ambiance and offers a great dining experience.Service is top notch and if you can get an outside table, the sunsets are gorgeous. The truffle fries are a must, but should be shared as the portions are generous. We had delicious fresh fish here, perfectly prepared.

We also had memorable meals at Bite Me(a little open air restaurant located right on the wharf between the airport and Kona),Sensai in the Queensland Shopping Area and Cafe Ono near the volcano park.

I am sure that there are many more terrific places to enjoy but these are a few that we found and would return to enjoy again.Bon Appetite!!!

Searching for the perfect toaster

I bought the Classic Chrome 4 slice which is the second one on the Amazon site that you posted. It does seem like an inordinately pricey machine considering that in the end it IS just a toaster but if I added together all of the others that have failed over the years it may be worth it! I didn't have to pay as much as Amazon advertised, as it was on sale but it was still more than I had planned to "invest".

Toaster update
I bit the bullet and purchased a Dualit classic four slice toaster from a Paderno store in Halifax. The owner was kind enough to allow me to literally "check it out" with several types of bread before I decided. The bread toasted perfectly and I was assured that they have never had any complaints with quality although he also said that it is not a top-seller because of the price!Hopefully this will be the last toaster I have to buy.

Pressure cookers- which brand and model should I buy?

I am still debating the model despite all of the help from the Chow Hounders!!! While the consensus seems to be that the "best" is the KR,a novice like myself has nothing to compare so all of the pressure cookers are probably going to seem to do a great job to me.( I realize that I need to take a step back when a selling point that I am considering is the pasta insert on the Futuro model!!!)You'd think that I would be more interested in the actual features that cooking under pressure bring!
At least with all of the help on this site I have managed to sift through all of the available choices and pretty much narrowed it down to two,but as soon as another brand pops up I am researching again.
Thanks again to everyone who has shared their knowledge. You have probably saved me from rushing out and buying one of the lower priced, lower psi models that would have ended up gathering dust in the back of a cupboard!

Pressure cookers- which brand and model should I buy?

I have a gas stove which should bring the pressure up quickly.

Now I have been on a site which sells several different different brands of pressure cookers and am looking into the Fagor Futoro model 6L version. The Kuhn Rikon is also available but I think the shorter handles on the Fagor will be easier for me to handle.

Pressure cookers- which brand and model should I buy?

I thought they meant to brown in the pot before adding the water and putting it under pressure.

Pressure cookers- which brand and model should I buy?

Thanks to all of you for helping make my decision easier.I will definitely be purchasing a new PC in the next couple of weeks. Now I just have to sift through all of the comparisons and decide on the brand. Not an easy thing to do. I guess I am leaning toward the Fagor but the Kuhn-Rikon has its pluses as well.

On one website the information said that you could not braise in the KR but the Fagor could.Does anyone know anything about this? Also there was some talk about the varying levels of pressure on some models.More is better?!

Pressure cookers- which brand and model should I buy?

I have been checking out the use of pressure cooking and am wondering about their benefits and,of course, which brand makes the safest and easiest to use version.

I have memories of my Mother carefully releasing the pressure of a wobbly knob and it always seemed like an unnecessary worry. Why not just use a regular pot!!

The newer models seem to have taken the danger out.

What do you think and is it only worth purchasing if you are in a hurry?

Thanks for the info.I thought I needed a four slice model but am hearing that the Dualit toasts much quicker than the competition,so maybe a two slot version will do the trick

Thanks for the help.We are actually going to be on the Big Island from the 16th to 30th and want to enjoy a good mix of restaurants. We are all looking forward to some fresh seafood. Thanks for the tip about Brown's Beach House as that place seems to pop up in all of the travel books.

Can you recommend one of the luau's as we would like to enjoy one while we are there?

Have you heard about the durability and performance of the Lite model? It sounds great but most of the people that have reported problems seem to have them with this version, not the Classic. I have also heard that there are electrical issues with overheating.

Searching for the perfect toaster

I was happy with my Kitchen Aid for about two years and then it seemed to lose its' power.Same thing with the Cuisinart which lasted all of three years. This time I am hoping that I can find the one that lasts. Dualit keeps popping up as the most durable but I'd be REALLY ticked if after the big expense to purchase the Classic model,it caved after a couple of years as well.We are a family of four and not really hard on our appliances but have had no luck at all with toasters! The new Breville seems to get consistently good reviews as well and is quite a bit less costly. So I am not going to jump into buying something without checking with others first.

Searching for the perfect toaster

I actually just bought the Breville smart toaster oven and am planning to use it at our cottage.I've been using it at home for a couple of weeks and it does do all things well but is really too large for the counter space.

Thanks for the info.Do you mean that the Dualit lite is cheap plastic? I don't really care about the status or design really-just would like a great performing toaster!!

Which dualit model do you have?I was looking at the dualit lite four slice and comparing it to the breville four slice online to see which might be better. It is confusing!! There seems to be quite a difference in price between the dualit models and I wonder if there is that much difference in the performance.

Le Creuset vs. Staub

I purchased a Staub last year after debating which of the two was right for me.I can't compare them but have used my large dutch oven for everything that I cook and love it. No complaints at all and it is SO easy to clean. It looks the same today as when I first used it.

Searching for the perfect toaster

I am tired of trying to find the toaster that gives me an even(on both sides)piece of toast for breakfast!!

Is there anyone out there who can help me find a four-slice version that will do the job? It would be great if I could toast the odd bagel as well.

Am willing to spend whatever is needed to end my search!
