Best deals in Chicago 2014?

Hello all, i'm visiting this weekend and on a budget for the majority of my meals with a splurge here and there.

Could CH please recommend any "deals" around chicago that are good bangs for the buck. So far I've seen the pre-theater menu at everest (while not cheap it does seem like a great deal for the quality).

Thanks!

Late Night Chicago Affordable Eats/Snack

The girlfriend and I have decided to go to Everest for their pre-theater menu at 5:30.

We will probably be hungry at/around the 10:30/11PM mark for another meal or snack (definitely not watching our diet this weekend!)

Could CH recommend a place that would be nice to go to for a late night snack? It doesn’t have to be a formal sit down place at all and wouldn’t mind going to a fast casual place at all or something else unique to Chicago.

If possible, we’d like to keep it under $75 for the both of us together.

Thanks!

Ma Peche Dim Sum for a Bday?

Trying to plan a 25th Bday for a GF and hope to keep costs <$70PP with a different experience. Would the new Dim Sum format at Ma Peche fit this bill and would CH think it would be a good idea in general?

Thanks!

Any recent reports of Blue Ribbon Bakery?

I'm planning on throwing a birthday dinner and hear they have a nice room downstairs. While the food seem very old fashioned American, can anyone comment on how it has been lately or the overall quality of the fare?

I'd ideally like some more creative cuisine but havent found anything with a nice room or table to the side without a pre-fixe or food spend minimum.

Thanks!!

Custom Menu

I know this may be a tall task at my price point but was offered this at a specific restaurant so I wanted to see if there were any similar options.

When calling about a reservation for 10, a restaurant was able to work with me on helping the chef create a menu for the night. I was quoted around 50-60 (no drinks) but ended up passing it over due to the cuisine type.

Are there any similar stories or restaurants that can possibly do this?

Thanks

Supper Club / Dinner Event for 10?

Hello all,

I'm looking for a unique experience for a 25th birthday happening in the end of March. Can anyone recommend an out of the ordinary type of experience for this event? I've thought about an underground dinner / supper club event but am unsure where to start with this.

Thanks!

Does anyone know if such a thing still exists?

Any private rooms / secluded tables for 10 without a $ minimum?

Hello All,

I'd like to inquire to see if anyone on the board knew of a good restaurant that could host a birthday party for 10 without an extravagant minimum spend ($50-60 a person would be manageable).

Edit: It does not have to be 100% secluded or private room but a nice separate area would be great. (We did Louro last year and found it great)

Thank You!

Wine Suggestions for this Interesting Menu / First Time Corkage Advice

Appreciate the different views. Althought the restaurant did not post the wine list online, I went on and visited to get a copy to ensure that I wasn't bringing anything exactly on their list.

As stated, these bottles of wine aren't unique or extravagant by any stretch of the imagination so I didn't want to be rude in any way. I definitely see both sides to the picture in this case and wanted to be on the safer side.

Wine Suggestions for this Interesting Menu / First Time Corkage Advice

Appreciate all the advice folks,

I went ahead and purchased off of recommendations on this list (Riesling, Chardonnay, A white, and a Bubbly to start)

However, my only concern, considering that it is my first time bringing in wine, are that the wines aren't unique (expensive) enough, each range around $20-$30.

My main reasons of doing this are to take care of the wine costs as the host, we're fairly young and understand that some of the party may not want to end up spending more than $100 a person.

Do you think the restaurant would be offended in any way? I'm unsure if the wines are similar to those in the restaurant, perhaps I should order one at the restaurant as well? I know this isn't per se, but don't want to come off as rude or offensive.

Last question before i report back! Thnks!

If anyone would have tips on when/how I should call or make these reservations would be very appreciated! Looking to plan a celebratory dinner in several weeks and am hoping to get in. I've tried several times earlier in the day to no avail.

Discovering new wines as a newbie (Or things you wish you knew)

Wine newbie here, starting to discover a very expensive hobby. My question to the forum is, what in your experience, is the best an new way to discover new wines.

Would it researching online/finding reviews, and hoping to find the same bottles locally? Would you recommend just walking in and trusting nearest reputable wine stores? Any thoughts on wine deal a day sites?

Lastly, if you have any other good wine sites, or perhaps apps you wish you had when you first started, those would be great.

Thanks!

The wine list starts at ~$50 and goes up to several hundred dollars. The corkage fee is $25 per bottle with no limit.

Also, I'm located in NYC for those that may know of a special spot to pick something up

Thank you all for the responses.

I believe that the wine list starts at ~$50 and goes up to several hundred dollars. The corkage fee is indeed $25 per bottle with no limit.

The drinkers are several young ladies not sophisitcated in terms of wine at all, so I would assume something with low tannins may suit their taste.

Thanks!
