Anyone Tried the $11 grilled cheese @ Fatty Cue?

Thinking of making a trip down to the WV.

Is it better than Melt? Or that one grilled cheese truck?

thanks in advance

E.19th and Cortelyou Road - Mex Deli - Decent tacos

I had the Al Pastor, Bistec, and Barbacoa. Less than 10 bucks (prolly less than 8)

I wouldn't have mentioned this neighborhood spot, but the Al Pastor had slivers of pineapple in it, which to me is a pretty interesting twist. Back in Austin/Houston, you might see the pineapple on top of the spit/vertical rotisserie, but the pina taste was always faint. The other two were good. All were served with a salsa verde, 2 lime quarters and a helping of sliced radih.

They also had Santa Muerte and Virgen de Guadalupe statues, Mexican Coke, fresh nopales, fresh serranos, fresh tomatillos, dried chiles and lots of the Mexican Standards.

If you're in the area, definitely check them out.

Momofoku's for a 3rd Anniversary? b/w Garment Center Eats

Question #1

My GF really likes Asian-y food and I've been meaning to try one of D. Chang's spots.

Is it possible to just show up @ 7:00 pm on a Tuesday (at any of their locations, ssam, ko, ma peche, and the other one) and be seated in a reasonable time?

And if it's not possible, what other placese are good for a fun couple that's kinda adventurous

Coming Home for the Weekend

Thanks everybody

Coming Home for the Weekend

Live in NYC now but I haven't been in Texas since 07.

Trying to nail down my itinerary

1) Banh Mi - les Givral's or Don Cafe
2) Cajun/Creole/Po Boys - ?
3) Texas Land and Cattle - I really like their smoked sirloin
4) BBQ? Went to school in Austin, so looking more for a Central Texas style and less of the Thelma's/east texas style.
5) Tex Mex or Mex/Mex - something with really good tortillas

I do enough "expense" account eating here, I was wondering what else is new on the ethnic/lower end eats that I can't get in NY.

Recommendations?

Ever eaten at Fette Sau?

We've been to a lot of the same places. I wouldn't put fette sau above Rudy's, but definitely above Bill Miller and Luther's.

Best donut in Manhattan?

I've been going to donut plant 3 times a month for the last 4 months if not longer. A dozen every time for the office. I.ve had all of their flavors at this point.

Are there any alternatives on the east side?

pizza in the east 50s

Midtown is a pizza vortex. Most of the pizza is for office worker drones, like myself.

You really should hop on a train a few stops if you want a slice joint. @ 42nd you can go to Guiseppe's on Lex and 39th or Royal on 3rd and 38th. Or down to 14th for Artichoke or Mariella on 16th and 3rd. Or up to Patsy's in E./Spanish Harlem.

Best Indian in Manhattan??

What is everyone ordering @ Dhaba? I live 3 blocks from the place, and menu wise it doesn't stand out next to Cinnamon, Pongal, Madras Mahal?, Chennai Garden, Tiffin Wallah, Curry Leaf, Tamba, or Saravanna.

Looking for Korean BBQ "Spicy Pork Belly" in Flushing

#3 on this menu from Honey Pig in VA - http://welcome.bz/serv/red/serv.asp

I think it's just regular pork belly marinated in a gochujang mix, but my Korean is a little rusty (i.e. non-existent) so i'm not sure. Out of the 3 or 4 places i've been in Koreatown, I never see it on the menu.

Best Pizza Slice in Midtown

Just had 2 today, it's in the take out section which is not easily accessible from the street.

And my pizza @ 11:15 was barely room temperature.

What does this phrase mean? [split from Ontario]

Interesting conversation happening north of the border. Not to interject my West Indian living in US sensibilities, but this would really play out differently here.

My immediate thoughts race to things like Meatloaf and Mayonnaise and Eggs Sunny Side up. But you guys seem to be talking about upper class/crust foodie tastes in what's essentially French Cooking with Italian sensibilities - i.e. great techinque with particularly good sourcing.

Most of the top NYC restaurants also play to that sort of thing - French, Italian, Mix both and call it New American, with the occassional nod to a Sushi place.

How's the Mud Pie?

Best Pizza Slice in Midtown

Previti's Pizza on 41st and Lex does an okay slice, I prefer their foccacia slices.

And Royal Pizzeria on 38th and 3rd does a decent slice if it's fresh out of the oven.

Midtown pretty much sucks for slices though, it's not to good for whole pies either.

Num Pang Midtown b/w Steve's Ice Cream

Yeah they are.

Num Pang Midtown b/w Steve's Ice Cream

Num Pang in Midtown is a new Cambodian sandwich place. I'm sure all of you know the history behind the restaurant.

That being said, i've had 6 sandwiches (of 12) @ this point. My rankings

#1 (a) - the Pork Belly - some pretty big hunks of pork belly for 7.75
#1 (b) - Grilled Skirt Steak is also pretty generous, even though it clocks in @ 9 bucks

# 3 Coconut Tiger Shrimp - I was thinking this was going to be outback-ish, but they weren't. I think they were prepared in coconot milk and then dusted with coconut flakes, but don't quote me on that.

#4 - Roasted Salt and Pepper Japanese yam - Surprisingly good for a no-protein sandwich

Tied for 6th - the Grilled Khmer Sausage and the Grilled Spanish Mackerel. The sausage was fine, nothing to write home about. I really wanted to like the Mackerel, but it was tad dry.

I'll prolly knock out the catfish, brisket, chicken breast and maybe the pulled pork before I get something i've already had.

Bolstering all the sandwiches is some pretty hearty bread. And they all come with cucumber, pickled carrots, cilantro and chili mayo. Sometimes the carrots can make the sandwich a little sweet, but I like them. And all the sandwiches get a boost with the Sriacha.

The fruit salad is served in an unappetizing cardboard container, and the dressing is a tad strong. And for whatever reason I wasn't feeling the Papaya or the Lychee, both of which I buy fresh.

The market pickles (watermelon rind) are definitely designed with the Williamsburg set in mind, but it wasn't for me.

All in all one of the best things to happen to lunch in that area. And for the loc's, the line was long the 1st 2 days, but it's really manageable now. PPL order pretty quickly, and it doesn't take that long to get the sandwich. I wish they could teach all nyc businesses how to manage a line that well.

Steve's - resurrecting the mix in pioneer's name, they opened a spot on 42nd between Madison and ...? it's 4 E. 42nd.

I've never been to Steve's, but I have been to a lot of places that have ripped him off. Namely Houston's Marble Slab and Austin's Amy's Ice Cream. I've also been to a certain national chain whos name I will not utter.

So that's what I was expecting......didn't see a cold slab of anything while i was there. Maybe at some point in the future I can get Haribo Gummi Peaches mashed into my Kombucha sorbet, but it's another dream deferred.

Got there pretty late in the afternoon, but the place was well staffed.

Tried the Salty Caramel and 2 of the berry flavors, and just as I was going to Salty Caramel it up, the young lady ahead of me got the last scoop. I got the Blackberry/Honey which was really good. But they were charging gelato prices for ice cream. 4 bucks for 2 scoops. Do they not realize 31 flavors is on my block?

No ice cream sandwiches available yet, but they did have cookies.

For the interest of science, I went with the Chocolate/Hazelnut/Cardamom - The cashier said there was something "special" about the cookie, but as a West Indian, i'm very mindful of "special" cookies. Turns out it was something else WIA's Dad would have liked, it was Vegan!

And given that I don't ital at all, It was still very good.

thanks for reading,
WIA

Grand Central Oyster Bar: for tourists or Lovers of Good Seafood??

What's on your Summer List?

I already knocked out the Grimaldi @ Limelight.

089 is next for my Manhattan Pizza list.

2. Lunch @ Larb Elee
3. Fatty cue/crab - whatever that restaurant is named on the West Side
4. Probably a D. Chang restaurant for my B-Day
5. Prune for Brunch.

Incidentally, you can get Lemon Ice King of Corona Italian Ice's @ Previti's Pizza on Lex and 41st.

Where are you going this summer?

Soursop ice cream?

I've had it at Bao Noodles on 2nd and 23rd. They had jackfruit as well. It's real common in Brooklyn, cause we West Indians love soupsop as well.

Anyone been to Teqa? (Murray Hill)

Haven't seen too much about it yet. It's across from Hummus Kitchen, which I also haven't seen much about either. I would really kill for a Taco truck in this neighborhood.

AYCE @ Hill Country on Mondays?

Has anyone been? I forgot to ask the waitstaff yesterday.

As for my take on Hill Country..

During my mispent youth as a salesman, i've been to
- City Market in Luling
- the meat market in Gonzalez (and pretty much most of the bbq off 183)
- Smitty's, Black's, Kreuz in Lockhart
- Southside Market in Elgin
- The Salt Lick in Dripping Springs
- pretty much all of bbq spots in Austin
- most of the bbq spots in Houston (which isn't really a central texas bbq hub, Williams' Smoke House and Thelma's are definitely more of a Southern/East Texas style)
- all the good ones in Dallas
- Rudy's, Dickey's, Bill Miller's, Luther's - and plenty of fast food/chain BBQ chains in Texas

I've been lucky enough to have a lot of really good Central Texas bbq. (i've yet to go to Snow's - but I haven't been in Texas in ~5 years)

Hill Country's brisket is really good. I'd still opt for Rudy's over HC, but i'm not mad at Hill Country's product. And you can't quibble with the Kreuz sausage. (I often wonder how Southside Market style sausage would go over here.)

As for the rest

Their prices?
The decor?
The music? (really, pumping country music @ a bbq spot? What is this Stubbs?)
The sides?
The "Katz" style ordering/paying system?
The fact that they have a waitstaff? (what is this, the County Line?)

no comment.

But how is the All You can Eat on Mondays @ Hill Country?

thanks,
WIA

Can you get Pit Beef (Baltimore specialty) in Manhattan?

One of the few things I miss from the dc/baltimore area (along with Granville Moore's, Ray's Hellburger, and Ethiopian Food).

Thanks in advance,

I'm trying to make someTexas Red in Murray Hill...

1 and 3 perhaps

I'm trying to make someTexas Red in Murray Hill...

Thx Nancy S.

I'm trying to make someTexas Red in Murray Hill...

I'm reminiscing about the Texas Chili Parlor in Austin.

Looking for local sources for

1) good place to get some "coarse ground" ground beef - I could always use some chuck roast, but I kinda like coarse ground.
2) dried chilis - like anchos or guajillos
or
3) chili powder

Thanks in advance,
WIA.
