Best place to eat alone

i imagine if you are in town for business you are looking mainly for lunch and dinner recs.

For lunch:
grocery on 13th for great soups
reading terminal
cafe old nelson (one right at broad and the other on 13th up from grocery)

for dinner -
good dog - on 15th great burger
village whiskey - so much easier to get a seat at the bar if you are alone!
el vez - decent mexican food and great bar placement for people watching
rouge - friendly bar staff and great people watching

hope this is not too late

Birthday Dinner for Three in Center City/S. Philly

Hey - My parents are taking me out for my birthday this Sunday. Since I'm still in my mid-20s and can't afford all the fancy places I read about I want to make this dinner worthwhile. Where should the three of us go in Center City/S. Philly that's great food?

Thanks!

best vietnamese on washington ave?

seems like nam phuong is it! going to have to stop by tonight.

thanks!!

pizza in Rittenhouse Square area

i always head to joe's

nice and greasy

best vietnamese on washington ave?

hi, i just moved to washington ave near the italian market and am excited about all the nearby vietnamese places.

where should i go and where should i avoid?

thanks!

Birthday Lunch Recs, DC?

rosa mexicana is near by as is oyamel and matchbox. they would all fit into the good middle of nice without being too stuffy.

What City Were You Surprised By That Had Great Food & Variety?

not in terms of diversity but just pure volume of tasty food to be consumed, i vote for lots of the small towns in southern georga such as albany, valdosta, bainbridge, etc.

in terms of tastiness and diversity, i was pleasantly surprised by asheville, nc.

sitka, alaska has had some wonderful food for such a small and isolated town in alaska.

Gift Certificate for my dad?

word. i was going to suggest this one too.

good location for looking at the xmas tree/checking out the monuments at night too.

Worst product at Trader Joe's: Maryland Style Crab Cakes

word.

made the mistake of buying them. they're totally gross.

Green chili in Silver Spring/DC??

santa fe cafe in NoVa i think is the closest you're going to get.

also, there is a cousin of little anitas (awesome ABQ breakfast burrito place) definitely not as good as the real thing but not bad. they cater all of the NM state delegation functions on the hill.

Red Velvet

not in the district but i had some good red velvet cake at liberty tavern in va.

good "alternative" /"dive"bar with food

the first bar that pops into my mind for this is wonderland ballroom in columbia heights. its on the wrong side of 14th but if you walk up 16th and cross over on irving you miss that problem area. it has bar food and is alternative and sorta divey.

also, in mt pleasant. tonic has really good bar food and is v. dark. not particularly divey but very down to earth. it's like a half block up from the raven too. so you could always eat at tonic first and then wander down to raven as the night goes on.

the same people own all three, wonderland, tonic, and the raven

Nice late-ish lunch in NoVa on saturday

thanks! just made a reservation at sette bello for tomorrow!

Cap Hill

belga!

moules, frites and beer!

Nice late-ish lunch in NoVa on saturday

my folks are coming into town on the spur of the moment and want to take me out for my birthday. having trouble finding a place that is open at 2:30 or so on a saturday (tomorrow.)

looking for some place with really good food and a nice atmosphere but it can't be any sort of asian food (which is really limiting in virginia!) also, we go to tallula all that time so i'd like to try somewhere else.

any ideas?

Airport food

sitka airport in sitka, alaska has the best breakfast in town and is famous for their pies. so good.

Bitter fry's at Mc D's?

as someone with an unfortunate amount of fast food experience - you probably just frequented a McD's that doesn't change its fry oil often enough.

maybe try a different location.

Baby Shower in DC or Alex/Arlington VA

yup, just about to suggest this too. saw one happening last time i had brunch there. seemed great.

Downtown DC Wedding Reception

my sister actually just had her reception at the old ebbitt 2 months ago. she had 160 people there, but maybe they have smaller banquet rooms?

i really like your restaurant ideas though.

i would also check out the "ask tom" archives in the post. i feel like this is a question that gets asked fairly frequently.

congrats!!

Best Onion Rings?

i will totally have to try that tomorrow.

Best Onion Rings?

i secretly love the ones at the senate caf. sometimes you just really need greasy food.

Help! Rescue my surprise Saturday in DC!

i second sitting outside at cafe du parc followed by a romantic walk by the monuments at night.

this weekend is the national book fair so i would hit up sushi ko in georgetown and then head over to the fair for the afternoon.

have a great time!

Alaska

hey, this is probably really late. but for my two cents as someone who lived in ketchikan a couple years ago. i really suck at names but theres not that many restaurants in town so it wont be hard to suss it out. but by far the best hashbrowns i have ever had in my life is at this dinner down on the end of water street. it looks really divey but is really great alaska character. pretty much everything you could wish for in a dinner. also, the locals get their coffee in the mornings in the little random coffeeshop tucked away in the corner of that big tourist mall - right by the lunber jack fair.

new york cafe is also another safe option for some decent food. its just behind water street uh, over near the pedestrian bridge.

but just as a general heads up ketchikan is really bleak. honestly there are much "cuter" towns in the SE such as sitka. i would just immediately go off hiking for the day after being let off rather than "exploring" the town.

24th birthday dinner

yeah, creme too is great. lots of other cute bars around there too, if you guys decide you want to bar hop too.

i think that georgetown is just annoying to go out in because its so cut off from public transit.

24th birthday dinner

slightly outside your geographic parameters but i would recommend cafe saint-ex in u street. make it a one stop night. get some dinner there and then stick around to dance.

Take out in Adams Morgan

i always get the kung pao tofu too! it always makes for the best lunch the next day...

Take out in Adams Morgan

hey! i just moved to the area too, only a few blocks east. this was the first thing i tried to figure out too since sometimes i need the food to just come to me.

here are the recs i got. have yet to try most of them.

* Tacos Pepitos Bakery 2
1762 Columbia Rd NW, Washington, DC 20009, USA
* Jyoti Restaurant
2433 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20009, USA

Taquería Distrito Federal - ive gotten take out here and it rocks. best mexican i've had in dc, not entirely sure they deliver though

Nooshi
Spices
Sala Thai
Meiwah - decent chinese, good veggie options though
Heritage India
Simply Home on U Street delivers and its good

also the korean place in mt. pleasant is supposed to be good but havent worked up the courage to try it yet since it kinda treads the divey-dirty line, IMO

also, for take out in mt pleasant i really like tonic. they have great pulled pork sandwiches and tater tots and if you want to eat in they have half price burgers and brews everynight from 5-7pm and some sort of tuesday night wine deal that i heard was great.

welcome to the neighborhood! hope this helps.

ChinaTown Reccomendations

pho cali! best vietnamese in town. 10th and arch (i think?)

Atlanta - 3 Days to Chow. Help?

it seems like you're shying away from southern food (maybe since you already live in the south) but i would also add:

wysteria - good high class southern food over near the carter center
harold's for fantastic bbq and the best brunswick stew - over near the prison
dusty's bbq - up near emory for tasty bbq sauce
For good southern breakfast - crescent moon (all around solid but i really like the skillet things) and patries a-go-go (fantastic biscuits) in decatur, and buckhead diner (don't let the name fool you, its actually really fancy) for fantastic shrimp and grits

i like the vietnamese place on ponce in decatur better than the one listed above but i don't think that vietnamese food is something that atl generally does all that well. i would much rather go to a korean place along buford highway.

i also really live 6 feet under for good seafood and zia's bluebird cafe for some alterna-southern brunch. located right next to each other across from the cemetery.

for night life - i like the brickstore (i think thats the name - definitely brick something) in decatur sq - good beer and chill vibe, the righteous room off of ponce good beer hip young 30's crowd, the highlander near va-highlands is a laid back bar with good people watching (and va-hi neighborhood is cute in general to walk around) also, in east atlanta i like the earl for hipsters and mary's for an anything goes crowd

for sights - i recommend stone moutain which is a short drive outside of town and is kinda like a creepy mount rushmore for confederate soldiers, and the cyclorama right near the zoo and grant park is campy good fun. also check out margaret mitchell's house on peachtree just south of buckhead and the MLK museum (which is in sad disrepair)

i miss atlanta!!

Fun and Funky in Asheville

hotel tupelo. best shrimp and grits i've ever had. then you can go over to the chocolate shop (i'm blanking on the name) and get a treat to enjoy while you walk around town afterwards.
