Nice try with the German :)... Little rusty?
Keep in mind that German cuisine is also developing. Sure, Grünkohl und Pinkel is a traditional way of doing kale but that doesn't mean that it *has* to be done that way.
What goes with a Schnitzel is at the end of the day Chef's choice.

If you travel to Germany or Austria these days you will get the traditional stuff, sure. But a Chef that earned (or wants to earn) that title, needs to develop further just like the palate of his customers.

So, try the Preiselbeeren with the Schnitzel. They also go well with Gulasch.

Heidi's Bavarian Bakery in Ridgewood- Finally, German Bread in NJ!!

Sounds promissing...

Did you ever try the Old German Bakery in Hoboken? In Germany this would be called a "Konditorei" but bread and rolls are great, too. If you are jonesing for a cup of German drip coffee that's the spot.

German food - Manhattan?

We planned to have a Schnitzel at Zum Schneider but changed plans and went across the street to Edi and the Wolf.
The food is so much more refined. The Spätzle are a remarkable dish and can be shared as an app. The Wiener Schnitzel with potato and cucumber salat is very good. Also available from veal (as it should be for "Wiener") for $4 more.

BTW Edi is run by Seäsonal's Edi Frauneder and Wolfgang Ban. The is reflected in the quality of food and service.

This is another relatively affordable choice where one can enjoy Middle European food without being bothered by humpa music and other annoying cliché.
