It's been a pleasure!

I have never been a major force on this board, just a post here and there and a many-year lurker. We are picking up and moving to the Milwaukee area, so the great lakes board will be my new home :)

I will be back in town a couple of times a year for work, so I will have to catch up on local developments when I do!

Thanks everyone, keep eating.

Singabella Cafe, Mass Ave past Porter

Just reviving this again after our dinner tonight. I got their lamb gyro plate, and my DC had a mushroom panini and a cup of lentil soup. A-mazing. I commented that I am kicking myself for not getting their food more often because it is so close, and I wanted to make sure it got more love here.

Lamb gyro plate. Matchbook-sized chunks of well-seasoned lamb with a mix of sautéed bell peppers and onions on a bed of rice. Tzaziki and hummus on the side, small salad and a piece of their MASSIVE pita, split and grilled. The lamb looked like it was spit-sliced and thrown on a grill with the peppers and onions. The sauces were great, the hummus shockingly so. I say massive with the bread because it is seriously a full inch thick and very fresh. Quite a plate.

Mushroom panini is basically the same bread, split, with big chunks of Portobella, spinach and a balsamic dressing pressed with a small amount of indicipherable cheese. Big enough for two meals and well seasoned.

Soup was good, it had a strange citrus note we couldn't place, like sour orange or something. It was referred to as "Italian Lentil". Good but probably the low note.

Please go here. It's hard to find as good gyro flavor and fresh pita around here, and the owners and service are just friendly and charming.

hand-pulled noodles

The thread is that old.

Grill menu at Toraya?

Could have been an off night; I usually have consistently excellent food there, including agedashi tofu. We always get a side of Japanese pickles to pass the time.

For me it's chirashi, for my wife it's a bento.

Don't give up.

Andrina's Pizza - Arlington - Best pizza I have had in MA

Bad choice of words, Unfoodie. My bad.

Andrina's Pizza - Arlington - Best pizza I have had in MA

I agree wholeheartedly. For me, it's simply craving the pizza I ate growing up, which is *my* perfect, which may not be yours, his, hers, etc.

There is a lot of crap everywhere :)

Andrina's Pizza - Arlington - Best pizza I have had in MA

Somewhat amusing that the quoted piece was the unrelated and doubted reference to a style of pizza that doesn't fit the description of Andrina's..

Andrina's Pizza - Arlington - Best pizza I have had in MA

Very interesting! I assumed from its texture and char that it was hand tossed and cooked in a baker's pride like back home.

It's still awesome!

They sell slices. I had a couple of plain ones on Friday at lunchtime.

You know I thought that too on the web site. I ASSURE you it's not that kind of pizza. Guessing that it's some kind of stock photo.

Andrina's Pizza - Arlington - Best pizza I have had in MA

To start, I am one of those people who originally came from NJ, and will say things like "every random corner frankie's or joey's pizzeria in NJ beats out most of Boston without even trying". I have lived here about 15 years, and have tried MANY of the places in the area.

With that out of the way, it's kind of hard for me to believe that no one has written about Andrina's just yet.

We've had delivery from them twice, and yesterday I picked up a couple of plain slices to go around lunchtime from a fresh pie. I am not necessarily saying that Andrina's is the best there is, but for *me*, it's perfect. Previously I held Sabatino's in this regard, and if you like that style you will LOVE this. It features good char on the chewy and thin crust, a good amount of garlicky sauce (this is an area Sabatino's lacks), salty cheese with the just the right amount of grease, and, in the case of previous orders, very fresh toppings (large artichoke heart quarters, big pieces of ham, etc.).

I made sure to get food from here several times before writing to make sure there wasn't any consistency issue, and I have not been disappointed. This is definitely not any kind of fancy/attempted fancy pie like Cambridge 1 or Picco but just very well-executed NJ/NY style thin-crust pizza. I would say this is not to be missed.

For reference of my particular style, pizza around here I would vouch for:
Andrina's (duh)
Sabatino's (also duh)
Mangia (South End)
New York Pizza (Roxbury)
Cappy's II (Huntington Ave., Fenway)
Gran Gusto
When Pigs Fly Pizzeria (Kittery, ME)

I do not care for the pizza referred to around here as "greek"-style, or anything that comes off a conveyor belt. For places like this, I find I appreciate the plain slices so much that it's hard to convince me to cover up the awesomeness with a topping.

Bummer!!

What about Casbah? I haven't tried it yet but it's right there. :) Also hi-rise a quick bike ride or drive away.

You at BBN?

POLL: Can you walk to an actual grocery store?

Arlington, MA. One 5 minutes (I can see it from my house windows) and another few in 10-15m walk range.

When is a Banh Mi not a Banh Mi?

I tried to get one on *tuesday* and they were already out. Damn you!

I went with the shortrib instead, which also had the pear. It was good. Not Mei Sum or Pho Viet good, but satisfying on a rare weekday lunch out with "the wife".

Not a bad place to work, with iggy sandwiches a short walk away!

Celebration of major life event (between Boston and Nashua)

I would ditch the whiner and just go for Korean in Burlington.

Oysters in Arlington

Summer Shack for sure. Fresh oysters. Decent other stuff.

Russo's vs. Whole Foods

For us Russo's is a special trip because it's so crazy when we go. But we go for:
* Halfsour pickles and sweet red peppers from POE
* One randomly chosen "new" fruit that we haven't tried before
* Mushrooms
* Chiles
* Pita bread, what a selection!

Whole foods does OK but these two aren't really comparable ideas. Whole foods may as well be stop and shop when I'm at Russo's.

Delicious Sushi, Odd Service at Toraya Arlington

Hard to say parking is hard at Toraya. They have a lot in back, there is a MASSIVE and usually empty stretch of spots on mass ave in front of the high school, and the surrounding neighborhoods are like the rest of Arlington, wide open.

Good Eggplant Parm

I have always enjoyed it at T. Anthony in Allston. It may be breaded.

learn to make a f#*%ing coffee

Love wired pup. +1!

Tenoch - Medford square

Had a great meal at Tenoch, the new taqueria tonight. I got a carnitas torta which was busting at the seams and was a great balance of not dry meat, heavy handed amounts of queso fresco and chipotle mayo. My DC had a burrito with a mix of chicken and carnitas (she couldn't decide so they offered both). She said the carnitas would keep her coming back. We split chips and above-average pico.

The owner or manager chatted us up and was excited for the turnout so soon after opening. He said they were trying to be known for their tortas since most places around here are more burrito oriented.

Go check it out! The people are nice, food is great and prices are reasonable.

February 2012 Openings and Closings

Sounds right, though I thought it was high st.

February 2012 Openings and Closings

Noticed a taqueria about to open in Medford square while driving by yesterday. Didn't catch its name unfortunately. Across-ish from Ebusiya.

This is all I can find that is relevant:

Crispy-edged pancakes near Winchester?

You don't want the heat too high, or you'll burn the outsides while not finishing the middles. A nice amount of fat and just enough heat for nice browning will get you crispy, but not greasy or burned.

Crispy-edged pancakes near Winchester?

I think the key is a lot of fat, maybe bacon fat or lard. I REALLY like the pancakes at cracker barrel (I know, shush) in Sturbridge because they are so damn crispy. I once stumbled upon the idea at home to make my pancakes in a hot panful of unseasoned bacon grease, and you know what?

Crispy as all get out.

where can i get good brioche rolls
