Has anyone been to Birravino in Red Bank?

my short review....

I tried birravino for the first time the other day. I have literally been to basils countless times as a mug club guy over the years so I know all about it.

The chicken scarpariello dish is very good and slightly different than the old basil's rendition. I really enjoyed it but jeez, this thing is much smaller. I think the old scarp dish was like 27 or 28. So they took off a few dollars and it is literally half as small I would say. LOL

At least they could beef up the dish with a few potatos that cost pretty much peanuts. I think there were literally 2 small slices of potato. I tanked the dish and was still hungry. I had a 7 dollar dogfish head bottle of beer and my buddy bought me a big mug. Overall my dollar isn't going too far here. Although they don't have liquor, I'd much rather hit Christines or Angelicas for Italian.

The newly "open" atmosphere is nice. It is not as dark and it feels a lot more spacious with the mugs gone.

New Microbrewery to open in Atlantic Highlands

I went last night and I am definitely liking this spot. For what its worth, like CC there is no sign or name on the building. Credit receipt says Mezzecantina (not gas light.)

It was actually kind of what I pictured it would be like....great beer, decent food.

There is a nice selection of drafts. I had three of my favorites (carton canyon, malus and green point IPA.)

It was good to see Carton and Kane well represented with a few selections each. Mr Carton was even in the building dining there...good to see.

I had a chicken dish that was pretty tasty for 19 I think. They got this one right and the skin is great...nice and crispy.

I opted NOT to get the skirt steak since I had a huge steak the night before (read my char review if interested.)

Beers are not cheap but it is what it is and as far as pubs around me with decent beer selections, the food here is much better than maloneys and molly maguires (even having only tried one dish here I can say this....well two if you count my friends.) I tried my buddy's beef stout stew and it was decent too.

I might actually go back tonight for a skirt steak. It was pretty crowded when I got there at 7:45 but then toned down. It is a little congested and cramped for my taste though.

So overall I dig the vibe here (once the crowd left,) like beer selection and the food seems to be on point which I expected from the renown owner.

service is a little chaotic but I think they are just getting into their grove so it should get better.

Char - Red Bank

Yes it honestly was a nice treat Joon. If you are a steak guy who can appreciate a fatty ribeye, and I know you are, this was a top notch cut cooked perfectly to temperature. If you want to splurge one night, this is an experience. As probably know, you can keep costs down a lot by not going nuts on sides or liquor. Just one single tomahawk will make you smile : )

For a price comparison, the 32oz "Lollipop" ribeye at old homestead was 99 dollars. Comparing vegas prices to Red bank doesn't really do much but just an FYI. For 70 I felt this steak was worth the price. It wont be for everybody but for demanding ribeye lovers, we are often willing to pay extra for quality.

yep that surly looking fella is me LOL

If you see me around lets have a cocktail.

Those are roasted garlic cloves which I sadly never tried. I missed the mac n cheese, potato, and mashed. I was determined to take the ribeye down. And yes, I did use the rib as a handle and chewed all the meat off the bone....much to the delight of the crowd. LOL It felt great, like a caveman. It was quite a nice night and I would like to tear into another tomahawk sooner than later. I also want to get over to la cipollina soon to compare their $40 prime ribeye to char back to back. This is not an apples to apples comparison since the prices are not equal but just a test I want to do for fun.

I think the issue at char is they need to rub down the steaks with a little kosher salt. Lots of good steak houses do this...not overkill but salt brings out the flavor. IMO really good marbled ribeye only needs salt, maybe a little pepper (no sauces or gimmicks)

I had the "Tomahawk" ribeye on special last night. This 40oz ribeye was a serious piece of aged meat! It was incredibly tender and the intense marbling added loads of flavor. As most of you know, ribeyes are naturally fatty but this took it to the extreme.

To me,the ribeye is the steak of steaks and this did not disappoint. At 70 bucks, this was an impressive slab of beef served with an entire rib bone, hence the tomahawk name. Before someone on the internet reads this review and blows their hard earned money on my recommendation, please make sure you know what a double cut prime ribeye entails. Note this is a big, thick, fatty, charred up piece of meat that requires quite a bit of carving. I wouldn't recommend it for your common filet Mignon eater.

For comparison, I was at old home stead last week and paid 70 for a bone in 20oz ribeye. It was very good (the one at Ceasars in Vegas, not NY.) This steak was actually better and much larger....for what its worth.

The slab bacon side was delicious and the roasted hot peppers are very spicy...to the point I was surprised they even served them. I like spice so this was fine with me.

Overall, it was a fun night with some coworkers...luckily I didn't pay but for a special occasion I would recommend the tomahawk as it far surpassed the other bone in ribeye and Ny strip my wife and I tried last time at Char. So for me, this place is "go big or go home." It is not a "foodie" place IMO but the food is decent, and pricey. So many people rant because they don't see the value here. Is it worth the money to eat here in general? I won't pick a side but I will say that if you want a manly steak and have some money to blow, the tomahawk is a great cut.

Good service, Carton Epitome beer on tap....two nice points.

meatball app is meh

rib app was good

lobster mac and cheese I had first time was very good and this time everyone liked it. I didn't try any since I focused on the steak.

Calamari app was average

Sorry for the crappy picture my coworker took but this gives you an idea of what we are working with.

Need good recs for Chinese take-out in Hazlet

There is not much around that area that is good. Ruby palace was the spot.

I think Aligado closed down. I drove my last night and it was dark and empty.

I went to matata once. It was decent and I want to try more dishes. The Vietnamese beef was good.

Why does NJ/NYC area have the best pizza?

CKE25,

Have you tried the "newer" place in the bottle king strip mall? I tried one slice of vodka sauce pizza that was really good. (fresh mozz and basil)

I would try them out. I forgot the name but will be back to sample some other slices.

Bumping this up....

There is a new fried chicken place in the sunoco gas station parking lot in middletown. It's on the corner of rt 35 and cooper....right before you pass whole foods if heading north....about 2 miles from red bank. I see some good coupons in my mail and they have some good wing specials. I will try it soon.

Cool.

I got my hands on some founders backwoods bastard at spirits. It's not even displayed. They basically sell it to their friends and keep it in the back. I would try to get some and ask. they didn't get much of it.

Simko's - Brielle

Last time i was there they served me a hockey puck burger. It was so well done I didn't even eat half of it and just ate the bacon. That place has changed hands a few times but I think I have only been to it once under simko name. I would go back to try it again if in the area but I'm in no rush lol. I'd go to captain eds or i hear good things about shipwreck

yeah I remember this too mark. It is a mad house during lunch hours. I went around 6:30 this time. Next time I am going to try a fresh mozz, roasted pepper and parma prosciutto. That is what the manager recommended. He says the parma is where it's at. At over 20 a pound for parma I am sure it will boost the price of sub. I am curious to see how much it will run.

I don't care for yelp. I find that the best food is often where great ratings are not. Yelp folks seem to be all about being popular and making friends.

I think joon summed it up with his "yum factor"

I dont mind paying for delicious food. I just want it to be worth it.

As for sals....i can assure you that the Roma is a solid sub
