New to Monmouth County- need recommendations

I was thinking the same thing. I thought it was a new Jimmys from asbury.

I think we need a new red bank "redux" thread. The town seems to be getting better on the dining front...not amazing but it's good if you pick and choose your dishes at certain locations.

see below comment on Jimmys "A little further out is Jimmy Pecci's Taste of Italy (Asbury Ave), but I understand they have opened another location near MJ's on Sycamore as well."

yes toki is the old broadway grill. They did a nice job on the inside.

JR, I ate at Toki last night (the one that was going to be called Taka in red bank.) It was pretty good...nice decor, great service and prices were slightly lower than I thought they would be for the location. Maguro was tasty.

wait what building did Jimmys move into in tinton falls? Is it a restaurant or "deli"

on the ocean/boardwalk?

Jr...Yeah its not the best spot around but for cheap food with some salt in the air it is ok. I like the wings and pretzels. ..beer selection sucks lol. With Kane and carton around I am not sure why they can't work things out.

Any new spots I should check out?

For Canadian visitors I would go with off the hook. It has a nice nyc view with outdoor dining. The food is mediocre but ok for bar food and it won't break the bank. Get a few cocktails, wings and pretzels. Enjoy the view, salty air and roar of bikes and cars ripping by.

Then head to somewhere local for dinner if you want better food.

If you plan to eat there keep it simple with burgers and chicken sandwiches....wings etc. higher priced dishes arent worth it.

If you want to know more about Avenue I can tell you. I work in long branch and have been there many times. So my question is....do you want to impress or have a fun time and not kill your wallet? If impress, then go to avenue.

Then there is red bank if you want a little night life lol

Does Junction bar even serve food? Serious question. Belford has some awesome salty locals. Does anyone remember the Meadowview? My hat is off to some hardworking nj local commercial fisherman. They work their ass off and I have seen what they do to make a living. I've spent a few days on commercial boats and it is amazing how hard these fellas work.

at vals I pretty much live on beer, pizza and wings. That is what it is good for (for my preferences.) I can't comment on the other food.

I really liked the lobster rolls at chowdah house but they are 25 bucks now (I think since lobster is out of season.) So for that price I am in steak territory for a few more bucks.

Christine's is good too. try the eggroll.

well here are some casual places I can think of that your child might like...vals, queso, off the hook, on the deck and the chowdah house which has outdoor seating in the back.

brothers has good pizza and Mr pizza slice. Vals in rumson I like too.

chicken wings at Tommys are a must try!

New Corner has a decent cheesesteak if you take it home, throw on another two slices of cheese and toast it up....not the best but decent. It is a little dry.

Try the roast pork sandwich at Phillys when you travel over to atlantic highlands.

North of the border is good but for tacos lino's is my spot (chorizo or al pastor.) Dont go on a hot day there LOL...the open fire pit makes is unbearable.

cafe 28 is a cool spot in RB and if you haven't had a windmill hotdog, try one. (not sure where you moved from)

I may have misunderstood you. Are you looking for a "nice" place to bring your child or something casual?

I see little kids in the beach tavern. As long as the child is well behaved I don't see an issue.

Try mac attack in red bank for good mac n cheese. Your child would like this place I bet.

Last time I had the little schzeuan I was really disappointed and that was a few months ago. Maybe try Emperor wok in shrewsbury. I haven't been there in years but back in the day it was OK.

Ps, red bank has some great mexican places but they are "hole in the wall" joints which might not be your style.

well I can write a book on this topic but let me get a few quick answers over.

Talercios is the spot so you have that down already. Sals in shrewsbury has some great subs.

Chinese delivery is tough in red bank area. See my post on Oriental Empire http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/1009242

Sultan wok will deliver to you and its mediocre but you get a lot of food. Sign up for their email specials and for like 20 bucks you can eat for like 3 days lol

Fish: wholefoods in middletown and "catch" in red bank for dinner. I can elaborate more on this. If you like specific species I can name some restaurants.

For something nicer than mccloones but not quite Nicholas try Beach Tavern in Monmouth beach. They have a good happy hour until 6:30

Cheesesteaks are hard to find believe it or not (well good ones.) Tre Calore in middletown is the spot to get them. Their BBQ platters are also good...hickory smoked on the premises. The 3 meat combo is quite a meal and I usually go with brisket, pulled pork and ribs but the kielbasi is very good.

For meat, costco and monmouth meats.

If you are a sopressata fan Giannas in atlantic highlands is similar to Talercios. John makes some great sweet and spicy versions. Also, they have a good rueben and Cuban sandwich. They have di parma Prosciutto

let me know if you have any questions. I have been to quite a "few" restaurants around here.

yes not cheap. Apps really drive up the price. I just get one dish, the rib eye and call it a day. 40 bucks but a prime beef extravaganza

Oriental Empire in Red Bank

synopsis: reasonable prices, nice/clean place, sizable menu, “Americanized” Asian cuisine that won’t blow you away in the flavor department.

I wont be rushing back here but this place is ok and I would try it again for some other dishes. It is like a like a higher scale Chinese takeout. This place should do quite well in that location (lots of foot traffic). I think the owner is smart doing the “fusion” thing and offering Chinese, Thai and Japanese under one roof. It will cater to the masses in a “compact” town like Red Bank.

Physically the place is quite inviting. It is open/airy, nicely decorated, new, clean and rather roomy for a small place (I can’t stand being crammed up next to another table a foot away.) They spaced the tables out nicely.

Going into it I knew the food would not be amazing so for an “Americanized” Asian place it was just ok. What I liked was the pricing was very fair for red bank. 11 panang curry dish was a fair price and wife had a duck dish for 16….both decent and portions were nice. What really surprised me was the presentation. They take pride in making the food look great. I honestly wanted to take a picture of our dishes….very nicely done. I saw a few dishes come out and everything look quite nice. I really was surprised by this.

$5 for 8 nice crispy chicken wings….good stuff. Two shrimp skewers were 5.00….not bad and could have polished off another round of these.

We had great service from two very friendly women which is very rare to find in these types of places. (in my experiences)

This is would be a good place to take some NON FOODIE family members and/or kids since it wont break the bank, there will be nothing too offensive/spicy/bold for anyone, and the food looks great. It will lack in the flavor department for a hound like me but overall, this was a decent visit and with their reasonable prices I would like to get a few more dishes. I am not rushing back but when in the area and I don’t want to spend big bucks, I will try it again.

The 13.00 flank steak dish I will try along with some soups. The reason I didn’t try soup was it was HOT as hell in there. I was literally sweating. I won’t go again until they crank some AC on.

It has all your typical “general Tso, sesame chicken, beef/chicken with broccoli” etc so for takeout/delivery I am sure they will do well there. They have hibachi but they don’t cook in front of you. It’s in the corner of the room.

Beach Tavern, Monmouth Beach - now open, anybody go?

Yeah lots of people order those but I am not an oyster guy.

Maybe tomorrow I will get there and try that cheese steak.

NYCPA, no I dont remember Zelbys but I had a pound of steamers sunday at Chowdah house outside. The back area dining area is pretty cool. It doesn't feel "red bank" to me at all...if that makes sense. LOL

The lobster rolls have skyrocketed to 25 bucks probably due to market price.

Fernandes 3 - Sayerville, NJ

Maybe I'm a few beers deep but where is tenderloin 30 a pound? That's one of the few cuts that hasn't sky rocketed.

The best quality meat around here is Monmouth meats in red bank. No it won't be the cheapest but if want quality meat that is the spot. If anyone has any better spots in Monmouth County please fill us In : )

Jr, try this over food town and wholefoods.

Fernandes 3 - Sayerville, NJ

Fernandes 3 may become my new spot. Rodeio grill is now 25 bucks. It is mind boggling that it was 18 bucks for probably a decade....no joke. I know they lost money when I went there lol. It's still decent and pretty close to me but I think I have to drive an extra 15 minutes and hit fernandes.

I bought an 18 dollar ribeye tonight at foodtown...Angus choice. What is up with beef prices. There is never a drop. I might as well spend 25 on all i can eat meat with sides and service. Sigh lol.

14 dollar a pound skirt steak? Beef is nuts now. Skirt steak not that long ago was 6 or 7 a pound. Ok im done ranting.

Beach Tavern, Monmouth Beach - now open, anybody go?

Fatboy, their happy hour is not bad in my eyes. 3.00 pints of good beer is ok with me. I had an 8.00 fried shrimp dinner last night. 6 nice and crispy shrimp served over a healthy amount of good fries was a strong value (good tartar sauce and a lemon.)

for 8 dollars where can you get a meal like that in an awesome venue ON THE WATER? seriously, I would like to know some other options. They have a cheesteak for 8 bucks on the happy hour menu. That is my next choice. People seem to love the oysters and mussels at happy hour too.

so two carton 077XX beers and a good shrimp dinner with tip cost me 20 bucks...not a bad deal.

I have to try this place and hopefully will get better service.

Chef Dominic is a cool guy and I really like his food. He is really accommodating and will make you a dish how you like it if you talk to him. I think there was just a disconnect between the kitchen and wait staff....hopefully that was the case.

Best cheap buffets?

I only went to Minado once and I was pretty underwhelmed.

The Eatontown one is prob the best around in my neck of the woods. Definitely hit the grill station up like joon mentioned.

There is an AYCE sushi place is Middletown that I want to try. IIRC, they actually cook you up dishes and make rolls to order so its not actually a buffet.
