I simply don't get food as competition

I agree you can "get used" to heat but lethal conditions for chefs would be lethal conditions for others.

BEST RAMEN AT MISOYA

So this is what is going in the old Nori space? I really like Nori (except for the one time when they mismade an order for me and gave me crab which I'm highly allergic to, but I digress). How did you get to eat at the pre-opening? I look foward to another ramen option.

I simply don't get food as competition

I worked as a barback for a bit in a restaurant and the ice machine and dish washer was in the kitchen. I've also worked at Oxygen network and the studios were nearby. The lights in the studio were hot but they weren't so hot that the on air staff would sweat so hard you could see. In a kitchen it's not just the heat but the humidity from the dish washer and the pots of stock and water for pasta etc. It's tropics hot in the kitchen and no one cares what you look like.

People can get used to lethal temps?! Good to know. How do you train for this and how did you learn how to stop sweating from the rest of your face when wearing headgear? I mean the rest of us not as well trained as you and your brethren have sweat dripping off our noses and chins.

Bourdain to Get His Own Line of Books-NYT

"Perhaps lightly scratching a long time literary itch?"

Well, he he had his first book published in 1995, five years before Kitchen Confidential so he's been at it for quite a while.

You're not watching Iron Chef very carefully if you don't see the contestants sweating.

Not to mention what the AC would do to the food once plated and waiting to go into the dining room.

I doubt, Bourdain will acquire any cookbooks. I see him buying books that interest him and as you hope and are very eclectic.

Are you a chef or cook? I don't think there are many kitchens with AC. Sweat happens, if you don't want any in your food I think you should cook for yourself.

Need a recommendation for a bar for daughter's first legal drink

The birthday girl was 8 when SATC started and 14 when it ended. Could she possibly be interested in the show?

Surviving without electricity

If your stove is like mine you'll need to turn it all the way to one direction or the other to initiate the electric starter. Just turn your gas on low and place a lit long match or something else that keeps your hands away from the gas and it should light right up. DO NOT HAVE THE GAS ON HIGH if you are using a short match.

Surviving without electricity

When I was without power for 3 days because of the '03 blackout I was still able to use my gas range. I just lit it with a match. Couldn't you have done the same? It really wasn't that much of a hardship. I just shopped daily for anything that could spoil.

What's with Manhattan restaurants keeping their doors open with no air conditioning in 90 degree weather?

Isn't it funny that some people would like it to be 65F inside during the summer and 75F inside during the winter?

The Ten Most Insulting Things Anthony Bourdain Has Said About Food Network - Grubstreet

It's pretty apparent the Bourdain demographic and the RR/Sandra Lee/Paula Deen demographic are very different and probably doesn't overlap much. I'm proudly in the Bourdain camp.

Restaurant:Impossible w/ Robert Irvine

The cheapest fix I saw is when they ran out of fabric for the banquette cushions so instead of wrapping the fabric all the way around the bottom of the cushion they just stapled it to the back. That will never last and in the long run will just leave the restauranteurs with something that will look worse than what was there before.

"Yes, the East Village is known for keeping their windows open yet charging market prices."

And what would you suggest the restaurants charge? Below market prices? These are businesses not your friends. If you don't like how they run their business go elsewhere.

Not at all. With all the bars and hotels you never have to walk more than 3 blocks to find a place to pee.

Skinny Girl Mararita Contains Possible Carcinogen

"Whole Foods has stopped selling former "Real House wives of New York City" star Bethenny Frankel's Skinnygirl Margarita after discovering it has potentially carcinogenic in gredients.

The drink -- which Frankel crows on her Web site is "the margarita you can trust" with "all natural ingredients" and "no preservatives" -- actually contains the preservative sodium benzoate, sources said.

Studies have found that the preservative can become carcinogenic if mixed with other substances such as vitamin C."
