$10-$15 dinner around Yonge and Bloor

There's a Kenzo Ramen on Yonge near Wellesley

Tired of cinnamon/walnut/raisin Bittman bread. Any suggestions?

I like the King Arthur no-knead oat bread:

I've also enjoyed a caraway rye version, and keep meaning to try adding roasted garlic.

Best Brewed Coffee in Toronto?

The Starbucks on Yonge just north of Bloor has a Clover. There's also a Clover at the Crema on Bloor, east of Yonge if you want to do a side-by-side tasting.

Help with restaurant recommendation

I would consider Enoteca Sociale as another choice on Dundas, but even closer to you would be L'Unita. Both good options for Italian.

What's the wait time like on a Sunday around 7:00? We may be in Brooklyn on the weekend and are thinking of hitting Spuyten Duyvil afterwards.

Brilliant Chinese Restaurant - Different dishes, equally enjoyable!

What's the average price pp at Yang's or Casa Vicoria/Imperial for dimsum?

Brilliant Chinese Restaurant - Different dishes, equally enjoyable!

So many restaurants, so little time! I also want them to try the lobster at O'Mei I keep reading about...wish I had more stomachs.

Nice photos and review! How does the Peking duck compare to the Emperor Monday special? My parents are coming to visit and I'm trying to plan some great meals.

P.S. Do you recommend Brilliant for dimsum?

Chocolate-covered bacon (to buy)

Just called About Cheese - they don't have any currently, but they'll think about doing it again in the summer :(

Warning on a couple of horrible tasting products!

Thanks for the heads up! I'm always tempted by the dimsum at T&T but now I'm glad I never bothered.

However, I did buy some "Double Happiness Mochi" on sale in the frozen section at T&T - big thumbs down. They have that strange medicinal herb smell that I can't quite place.

And I also tried the Asian Delight beef samosas (again on sale in the frozen section) at Loblaws. Just plain salty, with highly processed mystery filling. I was just at a get-together where someone brought some samosas from Little India. They said they were made in-house and then frozen for home baking, but I never got the name of the place. That's what I get for shopping on an empty stomach!

Fruit Baskets

Anyone have experience ordering a fruit basket for delivery in Toronto? Thinking of sending it with a condolence card.

Family friendly French in Toronto?

We sat at the back of Le Select and there were several tables with kids around us. Didn't seem to be a problem.

Passion Fruit Puree

Try one of the latin-american grocers in Kensington market. I noticed different frozen fruit purees and bottled nectars the last time I was there.

The Neighbourhood Butcher

Stopped by today. I was looking for a blade roast which wasn't in their display, but the guy at the counter said they'd get me one from the back. I took a peek in the back as the butcher cut my roast and he answered a few questions about different cuts of meat - very friendly indeed. Nice addition to the neighbourhood.

What is Canadian Cuisine?

I haven't made these in probably 10 years! I originally got this from a childhood friend:

1/3 cup butter
1/2 cup corn syrup
1 cup brown sugar
2 tbsp cocoa
1 tsp vanilla
8 cups puffed wheat

Combine butter, corn syrup, sugar and cocoa powder in a heavy saucepan. Briing to a boil. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Pour over puffed wheat. Mix well and press into a greased pan.

What is Canadian Cuisine?

If it's going to be close to Canadian Thanksgiving, consider an early turkey dinner with all the fixings. I love fall-themed menus including butternut squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkin pie...etc. You could use the turkey carcass for chicken-noodle soup the next day, or for some turkey congee.

You could also look up Jean Pare's Company's Coming cookbooks for some retro Canadian food.

I also agree with other replies regarding the diversity of Canadian food. Until I lived in other parts of Canada, I never realized how common pyrogies, cabbage rolls, puffed wheat squares and rhubarb were in Alberta!

what's good around Bay & College?

Kenzo Ramen is on Dundas just west of Bay.

Hot chocolate fondant/"lava cake"/souffle, etc. at Toronto cafe or restaurant

That's my favorite dessert at Dessert Trends. I've had it at their restaurant with coffee, and also purchased it to serve at home. Yum.

Gourmand adventure - Toronto style

Our friends from Vancouver always love the Caribbean food in Toronto. Sorry I don't have any personal recs though.

I've also been meaning to try 93 Harbord. Slightly upscale middle eastern food.

The Sultans Tent - Toronto

I was invited there as a company event and after reading the reviews, I was sort of dreading the dinner. However, I was pleasantly surprised (maybe due to low expectations!) I started with the smoked duck breast salad which was fine, and based on other reviews had the maftoul. They were just okay - typical variation of a deep fried "ground beef springroll." For the main I had the braised lamb shank. I don't think I've ever met a lamb shank I never liked, so this was no exception. Really tender, and such a large portion I didn't eat much of the couscous. Toasted almonds on top were a good addition. Dessert was creme brulee. Again, nothing to write home about and the crispy sugar layer was thicker than I prefer. Our server was very accommodating with allergies and very pleasant. This wasn't exactly a revelatory meal, but the food wasn't at all as bad as I expected.

Where's the bread pudding?

I second Caplansky's bread pudding. Delicious!

Markham Chinese Bakeries

Thanks for the tips! I ended up going to Lucullus - I would have never found it without your suggestion! So far I only tried the Spicy Curry Beef bun and the filling was really flavourful, not just salty like many other places. I didn't see BamiaWruz' reply till I returned, so I'll have to keep it in mind for next time!

Markham Chinese Bakeries

I'll be in the Markham area and need some recommendations for Chinese bakeries. Where do you go and what are your favourite items?

Yorkville Restaurant

We just had a great meal at Mistura recently. Pretty formal restaurant, but even though we were underdressed, the service was excellent. Some of the dishes we enjoyed were the grilled octopus, lamb rib appetizer, and wild boar agnolotti.

Happy Anniversary!

Good Restaurants in Orillia??

We really enjoyed the Library restaurant in Midland. I remember the rack of lamb was quite good. Not quite in Orillia, but nearby.

I bought a can of Irish Oats-now what?

I follow a combination of Alton Brown's recipe and Cooks Illustrated. Similar to alanbarnes but I toast in a little butter :) and then add water and milk. Cooks Illustrated recommends adding salt after about 20 minutes to avoid toughening the oats. I add honey, vanilla, cinnamon, raisins and fruit.
