carlisle pa area

Market Cross Pub is great. The food is very hit and miss, but their batter is amazing. I always get the fish and chips, some of the best in the area. They brew their own beer which is decent and also have a selection on tap and in bottles... one of the best selections in the area. They have adequate seating, especially if you call ahead.

I need a little help picking two Harrisburg restaurants

Have you tried El Sol/El Sol Express? Sounds like you might be interested in a BYOB restaurant, and if you're up for an "informal" night, they have "El Sol Express" on the west shore that is BYOB with fresh ingredients and a creative menu... not quite up to the mothership (El Sol downtown) or Suba, Bricco, etc, but a fun option.

Quail Eggs in Central PA

Looks like that is a great "under the radar" section of Harrisburg! I just got some good quail eggs from Little Saigon in the 2800 block of Paxton. $1.49!!!!!!

The Pizza Grille

Am I missing something here?

The night started out great (Mechancisburg location, although I've been to Lemoyne). Weather was great. Sitting out on the porch was nice. Things then turned south when I ordered a Negroni to start. I had eyed the Campari, vermouth, and bitters sitting atop the bar as we walked out to the patio and thought it would be a nice way to start the summertime dinner. My waitress told me she thought "we are out of Negronis" and I then told her it was a cocktail and I had seen the proper ingredients at the bar... she said she'd check. She came back later and informed me, nope, all out of Negronis...

Not a huge deal. I ordered a beer.

But then the pizza. After all, this is the Pizza Grille. I ordered the pizza margarehita. It supposedly had fresh mozz on it which appealed to me. This was unlike any pizza margarehita I had ever had before. The crust was all off (thick... not at all bubbly), the mozz looked like cheese you would see melted atop nachos, not fresh mozz, and the tomatoes were tasteless. Things all came together when I asked for some hot sauce to try and mask the horrible flavor and she brought out the "speciality house sauce."

Their speciality hot sauce was a concoction whipped up for them by Sysco (proudly displayed on the label). This summed it up. All those "quality ingredients" comprising my pizza margarehita where delivered via the same Sysco truck that backs up to 95% of our restaurants in central PA and fills them with the same crud.

Anyone know any good, truly fresh ingredient pizza places in the Capital region? I'm really disheartened when a place like Pizza Grille gets best pizza in "Best of Harrisburg" Please help. Am I alone here?

Harrisburg "Drink" Shout Out

Where are the places that we in the Capital Region can get a good drink (not these all you can drink coors light crawls along 2nd)... these places are good at what they do (e.g. beer joints have good beer; cocktail lounges make good cocktails).

This is inspired by a waiter recently looking at me like an alien when i ordered a Negroni (I think we are all out of Negronis!)

I'll start us out

Best Pub
Market Cross - Carlisle

Best Brewery
Troegs (soon to move eastward)

Best Pizza and Beer Joint
Al's of Hampden - Wertzville Rd/ I81 (the one and only)

Now if I can only find a good place to get a Negroni...

Harrisburg lunch recs?

Too bad you aren't in town on a weekday as the Jackson House is the best lunch in town. That said, grabbing a burrito at Neato Burrito on 2nd before the game and then walking across the Walnut St Bridge is a pretty good way to start the evening

Blue Crabs near Camden Yards

Where's the best blue crabs near Camden Yards?

We will be driving into town for the evening, so it can be a reasonable distance away if necessary, but walking is always better.

Would enjoy a place that offers not only fresh blues, but also good suds to go with them.

Thanks

Falafel in Harrisburg

Melpy

I think I found it. I went to Sphinx of PA today on Paxton street in search of some for meatless Friday. It was fantastic. Haven't seen anything about them on Chow yet. Don't let the interior fool you (it's an old Quiznos). It is delicious. I had the sandwich and my wife had the platter.

Philly Steak in Harrisburg

What's your opinion on the best Philly Steak in Harrisburg?

So far it would be Shugar's at the Lemoyne Farmer's Market for me. I've only had a burger from Jackson House, but their steak look good as well.

milford pa. On a fri night, anything good

Once ate at a diner in Milford early on a Saturday morning. We were the only non-hunters there. Flapjacks were good though. I'm pretty sure it was the Milford Diner. Didn't seem like there was a lot going on besides the Wal*Mart

Harrisburg Takeout

I frequent the one in NC, but that's not exactly what I had in mind... should have been more specific. I was specifically wondering if any of the eclectic restaurants (e.g. Bricco, Dunes, Manga Qui, others found on the Harrisburg Shoutout thread) offered takeout. None of those advertise takeout, but having an 8 month old, going to fine dining isn't exactly easy.

Pierre's now appears to be Fireside. Any reviews to mention? Anyone else out there appreciate dry aged beef? What about at the Bricco meat store or farmer's market?

Dry Aged Beef in Central PA

Anyone have any recommendations for restaurants and/or butchers in Central PA that make/sell good dry aged beef?

Just picked up a pair of Dry Aged Angus Beef Strip Steaks at Wegman's the other day and it was a real eye opener. Excited to try out other cuts and preparations from places around the area.

Stopped by Culhanes today (apparently voted best steakhouse in Harrisburg? Can this be? and asked them if any of their steaks were dry aged... a resounding no).

Thanks

Graduation in Winston-Salem

Thanks. Let me try to elaborate a bit more. I checked out Salem Tavern and it appears they are not open for Dinner Sunday night. Most of my family doesn't drink, so that rules out selections based on drink alone.
I used to live in Charlotte, so I'm familiar with Firebirds... nice regional chain, but looking for something a little more eclectic.
Any good authentic mexican in the area? It could be a hole in the wall (provided it has seating) or something a little more upscale (but not black tie).
Any good pork to be found (e.g. pork belly), outside standard fare carolina bbq?

Harrisburg Chowhound shoutout!

Has anyone been to El Sol Express, opened by Cap City Mall? A fantastic alternative to heading to the flag ship or "settling" for one of the microwave plate joints.

Graduation in Winston-Salem

Family will be in town for the Wake Forest graduation coming up, Any recommendations for a Sunday night dinner for around 8 persons in the Winston/High Point/Greensboro Triad?

Not all are foodies so I'm looking for a place to satisfy both those who enjoy "blood sausage" type fare and those who prefer Bob Evans.

Thanks for your thoughts on this interesting challenge

Heading to Selin's Grove Brewing Co

Update: This is a fantastic find and for those in the Central PA area, I would definitely recommend making the trip to Selinsgrove.

All beer was very fresh; Between our party, we sampled the Dubble, Triple, IPA (On Engine), Cream, Scottish, Porter, and Stout.

They have growlers for a reasonable price to take home.

Kitchen was limited (they do not have a fryer or grill) so they rely on local businesses in the area to source cold cuts, pretzels, cheese, etc.

All ingredients were incredible fresh. I had the governor sandwich (50 cents donated to Gov Snyder's homstead!)

I would highly recommend this as a "Destination Dining" experience.
