I made those and they are too good to be true!
Make me a muffin -- a Chowhound Challenge
I was sooooo disappointed by that recipe too. Mine were too dense - almost rubbery. I hardly ever have a recipe fail.
MSP 'hound's first trip to NOLA - help!
You may be a lot more comfortable if you brought a dress - a light cotton dress. As hot as you think it will be you will end up wishing it were only that cool! You say that breakfast at Cafe du Monde is non-negotiable so by all means go. But I would hit it in the afternoon or evening - there is nothing much to it and the menu is so limited. The place is a tourist attraction and packed in the morning. I'd skip Elizabeths - it's overrrated and you'd have to take a cab to get there. Stanley is dressy for dinner not sure about breakfast. Surreys is not as dressy and is located in the garden district. Get there by the street car - not walkable from the Quarter
Herbsaint and Ralphs are dressy - so is Commanders. You may want to try Dante's. Eat is not as dressy but you might be able to get away with dressing down there.
As far as cocktails are concerned I would skip Jean Lafitte's and Napoleon House. During the week Bourbon House (on Bourdon) has a good Happy Hour with drinks and snacks. You could also go to the Roosevelt for Happy Hour at Domenica and sample the pizza.
Enjoy yourself - but take it easy. The heat will wear you down qucikly this time of year!
Your easiest appetizer
Here are two that are similar and so easy. Every time I serve these it goes quickly and everyone wants the recipe!
Cheese & Onion Mold
2 c chopped pecans
2 c shredded sharp cheese
2 c chopped sweet onion
2 c mayo
1 jar seedless raspberry jam
combine cheese, onion, pecans and mayo. spoon into mold (I line it with saran wrap to make it easier to release). If you don't have a mold you can form it into a ball. Refrigerate until firm (2 hrs) or until serving time. Unmold it on a platter. Microwave raspberry jam until pourable. Pour over spread. Serve with buttery crackers.
Onion Dip
2 cups chopped sweet onion
2 cups mayo
2 cups shredded swiss cheese
Pour into a oven safe dish. Bake at 350 until bubbly and slightly browned - about 30-45 min.
serve with bread or crackers
Steakhouse near University for Birthday Dinner
I am looking for a place, preferably not a chain (Ruth Chris), for a nice steak (good, prime meat) dinner on my birthday. Will be at a meeting at the University - am an out-of-towner but will have a car. I have looked at both Murray's and Manny's and right now I am leaning towards Murray's. Would love suggestions/thoughts from locals. Thanks!
Chef Eddie Cass
Oh no! He was such a good man - every Thanksgiving and Christmas he made dinner and had the meals delivered to local elders who are homebound. What a heart he had.
Grass Fed Beef in North Florida
Thanks for the information. Also Calathora farms in Moultrie, Ga. has grass fed beef available in the fall. 229-890-1889.
Glass jars - fess up!
I share in your love of glass. I love the tiny room service jars of preserves and mustards and ketchup. I use them for salad dressings, mayo, syrup for on-the-go meals and picnics. I love old milk bottles and use them for flowers. I buy milk in plastic and transfer it to a half gallon glass milk jug. Love coke and snapple in the bottle too! I have been buying glass storage containers at Ross and TJ Maxx.
Indian Grocery Store in Tallahassee
There is a large indian grocery in the strip mall at magnolia and mahan drive. There are several in town. Welcome to Tallahassee! Try the Curry Pot at Betton (and Thomasville Rd.) for great Indian food.
one more recipe needed please!
Sounds like it will be a great party smilingal but I agree with others that it's too much. But here is my 2 cents:
Rumakis
A baked salmon which is easy to make
Stuffed mushrooms
deviled eggs (which can be dressed up)
Have fun at your party - that it the most important part!
Destin/Grayton Beach Sports Bar
Looking for a place to watch the Florida/Florida State game. Suggestions please!
What's For Dinner? Part LV
Tomato and basil bisque with parmesan croutons. The recipe is from Cafe Margaux in central Florida. I had some excess basil in the garden and love making this recipe. It freezes well and tastes out of this world.

I just tried the Curry Pot and it was excellent! There is a buffet at lunch and for 9 bucks there is a lot to choose from. All Indian food. Located next to FGF. Opens at 11 and was packed at noon.

Crews, did you mean Avenue Sea that was in Apalachicola? I believe that David Carrier is still the executive chef at Kith and Kin in Chicago (http://www.knkchicago.com/). He did tell me that he would like to come back here and open a place offering bar food but I would be surprised that he would leave the place he opened in 2009 - in Chicago no less! - to come back here. Our loss for sure!
Desperate ! Please respond lunch 20 or so Port Caniveral, Cocoa Beac, Melborne/ Beach
The deck at River Rocks sounds like a good option. River Rocks is on the Indian River off US 1. They have a reasonable bar menu.

I went to Tapas recently and loved everything I ate.
Best pizza in Tallahassee
Marcos off Bannerman is our current favorite. The flat bread pizza at Tapas is outstanding!
What's your guilty pleasure?
Fried chicken and any of the homemade cakes at Terra House in Colquit, Georgia. Same meal at Minnie's in Columbus. Pulled Pork at Brick Pit in Mobile.

oh and let us not forget the cocktails
I had the Miss Piggy Goes Green at Cochon and it was outstanding! The three dollar Mojito at Mr. B's was off the charts - it was the best cocktail I have ever had. The Hurricanes at Pat O's taste like cough medicine - not for me. Have a blast!

Melbourne FL. Chart House Review
There is a terrific place, on US 1, on the Indian River that has really good food and a fantasic view. It's just north of the Pineita CSWY. I think it is called River Rocks and I just love the place! You should try it when you are there.
Are raw oysters safe to eat in May?
I think that there is a ban on oyster beds at the moment due to the spill. That being said I have a place in Apalachicola and last Saturday they were busy harvesting despite what CNN was saying.
All this aside - oysters are in season in the colder months. Oysters are dormant in the late spring and the summer. So while it is no more or less dangerous to eat an oyster in a month where there is no letter "R", oysters in the summer is sort of like a eating a peach in December - they just are not as good. (As I was told by a marine biologist who works with Marine Fisheries)
Hope this helps - enjoy NOLA! :)
NOLA Trip Report
I Know! In the old NO post "Resturants You Wouldn't Recommend": zydecoplayer, Bigrayok, Bill Hunt, Jazzy B, and HetenNola all ran to the defense of Margaritaville saying that it was quite good and "had the best Margarita's." I was with a huge Parrothead and she was dying to go. Trust me - I have passed on it in the past and will pass on it in the future. Lesson learned.

NOLA Trip Report
I have had another very entertaining and happy trip to NOLA.
We started out on the Royal Street Stroll. While the entertainment was far better than in years past I must say that the wine wasn't remarkable and the food- well all I can say is "What food?" We encountered mostly bowls of peanuts and crudite platters. There was a vendor making what appeared to be a pasta salad but the line was far too long. The best thing we ate at the stroll was the tiramisu from Rouses. It was crowded this year but we had a great time but it seemed a little off this year.
Mr.B's. Certainly the most solid meal we had while in NOLA. I had the gumbo ya-ya and BBQ shrimp with a blueberry mojito. My friend had the fried oysters and grilled amberjack. Everything was excellent from service , to quality of food, and the mojito was one of the best I have ever had.
Sucre on Magazine St I sampled the peach cobbler gelato, chocolate macaroons, and a strawberry cupcake. Everything was worth the splurge both calorically and financially. I especially loved the gelato but could have lived without the cupcake. Thank you Suzy Wong for the recc. (Take the bus! Don't try to walk there!)
Margaritaville: Didn't want to go there but some hounds reported that the food and beverages were actually very good. Sorry to report that both the food and beverage made my stomach turn. The service and entertainment were very good but I just sat there starring out the window at Coops wishing I was there instead. Wishing I was almost anywhere than the bar at Margaritaville - sad to say.
The best recc I received through Chowhound was for Croissant D'or Patisserie - 617 Ursulines Ave - in the French Quarter. We had croissants and cafe au lait - all for under seven bucks. It was delish - and the atmosphere was wonderful. I will return again and again.
Nola: This was the most expensive meal of the trip. Highlights were the Pimms Cup and the crispy duck liver with greens, caramelized onions and creole mustard aioli. Also sampled Miss Hay's stuffed chicken wings with homemade hoisin dipping sauce - think turducken. I am not a huge fan of turduckrn so I was not a huge fan of the chicken wings. Everything else was average. Service was fine though the bar tender was brisk and not interested in making any suggestions concerning drinks. The bathroom was dirty which is a red flag for me and my dinning companion. Some of things being prepared - but not available for consumption when we were there looked out of this world!
Cochon Butcher: A real standout was the duck pastrami appetizer. It was fantastic! Miss Piggy Goes Green cocktail was fabulous too. A very busy place with a great vibe. Take a cab if you are staying in the Quarter.
Cup Cake Cafe on Chartres Street was a nice little place for breakfast. The cupcake here was very good and it's the kind of place that I prefer for a simple and inexpensive breakfast. And yes - I paid the dollar for the cupcake dessert with breakfast!
Domenica: Sampled a pizza and a couple of small plates. The best thing I ate here was the cheesecake. The pizza was fine - we appreciated the small plates - squash blossoms were delish. Disappointment for me was that they were out of several of the cocktails and the hovering service by the managers.
I went to the gas station on Rampart Street for fried chicken I had read about in several posts. It was Keys fried chicken (if that means anything to anyone). It was fine but I certainly don't think it was a stand out. What was a stand out was the recently released inmate from Angola that we met. He was charming in that ex-con kind of way and suggested that we all party together in celebration of his release. Best of luck to him - but we had to take a pass on the celebration.
Tried in vain to locate the Maple Street bakery and was unable to do so. Went to Oak Alley Plantation which made for a wonderful Sunday afternoon. They serve excellent Mint Juleps too.

I LOVE that suggestion! Will certainly give this a try!
Saturday Night Dinner with great dessert
I looked at the menus and it looks wonderful! A consideration for sure.
Saturday Night Dinner with great dessert
Thank you for your recs. I have been to Stella and don't plan a return. It was average and the waiter was a brat. Plus there was an arguement between some of the staff in front of the patrons which was a big turn off.
I have read so many mixed reviews of Galatoire's. But may try it on this trip. Will consider Sucre - sounds like a great dessert!
