I ate at Luke Wholey's in the Strip on Saturday apparently during a soft opening. They're on the block between 22nd and 21st between the asian grocery and the discount sneaker outlet. The grilled scallops were perfect!

Pittsburgh Neighborhoods

For beer options if you decide to stay downtown there are two. 1) Sharp Edge on Penn. The beer list is quite good (lots of Belgians) but the food is worth avoiding. 2) Winghart's in Market Square has a short list (usually about 6 options) that rotates often but the selections are always very good.

Pittsburgh: Restaurants Near Springhill Suites (Northside)

If you want to stay on the northside you could go to Hyde Park for a steak, or to Jerome Bettis 36 Grille for a burger or the like.

If you want to walk across the river you have all of downtown open to you, but that's the opposite direction from the hospital.

The Pittsburgh Strip on Sunday and breakfast on Monday?

Lucy has an agreement with the new renters of the firehouse and is there every day as usual.

Word hit the press today that the Firehouse Lounge will close as of Aug 1. I hope that doesn't send Lucy scrambling to find a place to do her prep and sell her sandwiches.

Pittsburgh chocolate

I'm not a huge chocolate snob, I like Snickers, but if I were trying to buy something for a chocolate snob I'd try either Fudgie Wudgie (17-1800 Penn Ave) or Mon Amiee (21st and Penn), both in the strip district.

Meat and Potatoes gastropub- PGH

I just got home from Meat and Potatoes and was very pleased. I had a couple beers (Flying Dog In-Heat Wheat iirc) and the Pork Dip sandwich which came au jus with fries and slaw. The star of my meal was the baguette which I was told was baked in-house. Some crust but not so much that it resisted being bitten into, and delicious. The slaw could have been better, but when I'm faced with a sandwich and fries the slaw's an afterthought anyway.

I'll be back. Plus they're open 7 days a week, Since moving to Pittsburgh I can't count how many times I've been caught by some restaurant that's not open on Sunday or Monday. If the rest of the menu is on par with the pork dip I've got a go-to spot for those dead nights.

The signs in the window are announcing Meat and Potatoes. However with a name like that web presence is going to be a bit tough to drive.

On the plus side, this says Opening in May2011:

A co-worker of mine went to the Strip for lunch today and brought back photographic evidence that Lucy is again manning the sidewalk in front of the Firehouse Lounge.

I'll be there tomorrow!

Pittsburgh Public Market

East End Brewing Co is now filling growlers at the Public Market:

http://www.eastendbrewing.com/node/869

I'm so happy I can now get my growlers filled and get back home in less than two hours. (The brewery location is just hugely inconvenient for me.)

No Reservations - Where it all began

I had given up on No Reservations and Tony Bourdain in general, but something caused me to watch this episode. I was struck by how much Tony had changed in just 10 years.

I was most struck by the difference between the guy at the end claiming that he was turning down everything because he was sick of doing media compared to the present-day guy who is nothing but media.

I guess that means the show didn't change my opinion.

My first trip to the Sharp Edge (downtown) was Friday right after work. It's three blocks from my apartment and I thought it'd be a good place to have a beer and unwind from a stressful week. However when I got to the front door I simply turned around and walked home. The line to even get into the bar was out the door and onto the sidewalk.

I managed to actually get into the bar on Saturday afternoon (one of the benefits, I guess, of downtown being dead on weekends.) The menu and beerlist is every bit as good (and bad) as all of the other locations. Nothing spectacular on the menu and a beer list that is one of the best around.

I can't be too upset about the wait on Friday since I really do hope they not only stay in business but thrive to the point that they lure other good bars into downtown, and really I don't go there because of the food, so all in all I'm happy.

No more Lucy (Strip Disttric, Pgh)

I had a pork sandwich from the guy and was severely disappointed. While he was making my sandwich he went to a squeeze bottle of sauce three separate times to apply this thick brown sauce it. When he stepped away for a moment I checked the hand-written label on the squeeze bottle and all it said was "k.c.".

When I finally got to eat my sandwich I suspected that the roast pork was swimming in K.C. Masterpiece Barbecue sauce. It was as bad as you can imagine.

If you like his sandwiches better than Lucy's, good for you. I appreciate options and hope both can manage to stay in business. But Lucy's is the only banh mi for me.

Bourdain's new book ........ Medium Raw

I agree whole heartedly. Maybe it was the half-hour format didn't allow long fantasies about The Godfather, or maybe it was because Bourdain wasn't yet completely full of himself, but A Cook's Tour was so much better than what No Reservations has become.

Try watching the few episodes that overlap back to back. (shows where both A Cook's Tour and No Reservations did the same location.) In every case A Cook's Tour is the better show.

Does anyone know when the Sharp Edge will open their downtown (900 block of Penn Ave) location? I went past yesterday and the windows are painted, so it looks close but I can't find anything online.

Where can I find Banh Mi in Pittsburgh?

Great day in the morning it's true and I've got a sandwich on my desk to prove it. If a war erupts between these two sandwich vendors it'll be over quick and it won't go well for one of them.

That's the best news (about food) I've heard this week. The guy who replaced her down the block just isn't as good.

Looking for kielbasa in Pittsburgh area

S&D Deli in the strip district seems to have a decent selection:

I've only ever had the port stew on dumplings from their deli, but the pictures of sausages on their website look mouthwatering.

As I was leaving Salem's in the strip I noticed that a place called Hot Frank's is now open. The sign shows a hot dog. Has anyone been there or heard more details than just the dog on the sign? It's around 27th and Penn or so.

Salem's Grill - Strip District

I've been to Salem's twice now and it is quickly becoming one of my favorite take-out places around. Last night I had the Lamb and Goat Curry which was overflowing the clamshell in which it was served, all for less than $10. The rice was very good but the curry itself was exceptional.

If you haven't been to Salem's yet you should go soon.

I'd be very surprised if they even allowed BYOB considering they are also opening a Halal butcher shop and close from 1-2 on Fridays for prayers.

Salem's Grill - Strip District

They deliver within a mile of the Grill. I asked about it and was told that since their profit margin is so low on their food items that delivery makes very little sense. When I suggested charging a couple $ for a delivery fee the idea was countered that if you do that the driver won't get tipped. (Which may be true I guess.)

It's probably bad form to reply to myself, but I found this:

Big Mama's House of Southern Cuisine is moving across the street from the August Wilson Center in the 900 block of Liberty Avenue next month.

The reason I have to doubt his post is that Lucy spends her winters in Hue. It's possible that when she comes back in the spring it will be to NYC but I'm pretty sure she's not there now.

I noticed on my last trip to the strip that the restaurant run by Lucy's daughter, outside which she stationed herself, is no longer a Vietnamese restaurant. Lucy's grill was out and manned, but from what I can tell the (anglo) guy was selling Italian Sausages with peppers, not Banh Mi.

I know the restaurant had had a For Sale sign on it for a while. Apparently if finally changed hands. I do not know what this means for our chances of getting Banh Mi in the spring. I'm hoping Lucy can set up outside the Asian Grocery next door, but that's just speculation.

Mail Order Lobster

I'm looking for recommendations for a Mail Order Lobster company. My parents love lobster but they live about as far as you can get from an ocean and about a 2.5 hour drive from a major airport. For those reasons they might be best served by getting some lovely bugs in a cooler shipped live from the source.

I did some googling and find about 500 companies willing to take my credit card number, but without the time or willingness to try them all myself I'm hoping I can get some informed commentary here.

(I also did some searching here and didn't find a pre-existing thread).

So... mail order lobster. Who's good?
