UWS brunch, cafe, etc. For NYC marathon
Good to know. My sister is from Seattle and this is her first NYC marathon. She expects to end in just under 4 hours. My other sister is from Connecticut but can't get in the city until 12PM so we can't eat any earlier. The sis from CT said she was able to walk into the park at the finish line a couple years ago...but things change. I just need to contact the runner and see where she most wants the support. I will ask her about the sewer cover sized hamburger and libations : ) good to know. Thank you both again.
UWS brunch, cafe, etc. For NYC marathon
Dyrewolf and Kevin...I figured this would not be easy - thank you for the good advice. I will look into an alternate plan with your suggestions in mind. : )

PGH Restaurant -Parents Weekend
Soba is by far a better restaurant and one that a college student would be happy to experience. Monteray Bay is over priced and not that good. Go to the outlooks on Mt. Washington before heading to Shadyside for dinner at Soba.
UWS brunch, cafe, etc. For NYC marathon
My Sister is running the marathon this November 6. I would like to have a nice brunch or bakery experience at 12pm then head over to the finish line around 1pm. I expect her to finish about 2pm. I don't know how to figure this out. Any suggestions? I was thinking of Bouchon Bakery at Time Warner but then, maybe is everyone else. I have to see my sister finish....help!

Any suggestions In South Side Pittsburgh
I third the Piper's. I love their fish and chips, shepherd's pie, and curry...not to mention the great beer. I like Ibiza for tapas, Kassab's is great for Middle Eastern..Dish for something really special.
Sonia Finn - Food and Wine Best New Chef Nominee - PLEASE VOTE
Rodzilla, you are not the first person to ask if I am China Millman...no I am not. I have talked to Sonia many times while eating at the bar. She is a very soft spoken woman but friendly. She seems a bit modest too. I get a good vibe from her. Thinking about Dinette...now I want to go eat there...

Sonia Finn - Food and Wine Best New Chef Nominee - PLEASE VOTE
Sonia Finn from Dinette in Pittsburgh is up for Best new Chef for Food and Wine Magazine. Please vote for Sonia. She has something really great going on in East Liberty. If you haven't tried Dinette, I would recommend giving it a shot.

Pittsburgh Fish restaurant suggestion:
I would recommend Eleven in the Strip which is close to downtown and has both meat and fish. It is a lovely restaurant with great service, cocktails, and atmosphere.
Best pizza in the Burg
I love Dinette for some fancy schmancy pizza. I also enjoy Spak Brothers in Garfield and Pizza Sola (several locations)

Conflict Kitchen: Get some lunch and learn a few things.
I tried the kubideh and it was delicious. I like the concept. They hosted a vegan dinner that was streamed live to Iran and I think 80 other places around the world. It was a cyber communal dinner at 10am pittsburgh time. I unfortunately didn't get to go but I thought it was a great concept. I like the Kim Jong II on the loudspeaker idea mentioned above...that would be something.
Strip District worth it on a non-Saturday?
Sundays are nice. Many stores have started opening on Sundays for limited hours. Cafe Raymond is now opened on Sunday too.

Paczki in Pittsburgh?
I just finished my last one yesterday. They were really good! Glad you liked them too.
New Donut Shop in Strip District?
I have been there. They have a "mini donut maker" like the one at Pike's Market in Seattle. The donuts are ok. There is some controversy regarding the owners very conservative and outspoken views and his slogan - "Peace, Love, and Little Donuts". Makes me not want to go back.
Salem's Grill - Strip District
It is located further away towards Lawrenceville. Probably 30th Street or around there. It is a huge building with it's name on the side - I just noticed it as they were fixing it up and getting ready for business. I drive down Penn Ave to 16th Street every work day but never actually looked to see what cross street it is on.
Salem's Grill - Strip District
I just read an article about Salem's Grilll and soon to be open butcher shop on Penn Ave. I drive past this building everyday and am now really excited to start shopping there.
All of there meat is raised locally. No antibiotics or hormones. Finally - one stop shopping for ethically treated animals.

Spaghetti with ketchup - does anyone else eat this?
My Mom made "Spaghetti Pizza" which was a hot mess. She tossed the spaghetti in ketchup and though in browned hamburger. Added a layer of shredded mozzarella and a couple of slices of pepperoni on top. Then she baked the hell out of it. She won $20 in a recipe contest so of course this dish was served everytime we came home from college with friends. I finally had to tell her to stop.

We are hoping someone takes over the space and honors the gift. Thanks for putting it out there though Panini Guy!
Paczki in Pittsburgh?
The Priory Fine Pastries - 412.321.7370 is taking orders. They are selling them
the day before and the day of Fat Tuesday (February 15 & 16). Groupon has Priory Patries coupon today $20 coupon for $10. I have been there before and it is a great shop. Their macaroons are outstanding!
King Cakes In Pittsburgh?
I have been to the Priory Fine Pastries and it is a wonderful shop. I also bought my Groupon this morning. Now I can't decide if I want to use it for the cherry pies they are making this month or some Paczki. Maybe I will get both!!
Trader Joe's brand - The Good, the Bad - What have you enjoyed? tossed? bought more of? thought a bargain?
The loves:
Pot Stickers
Any of their Coffee
Chile spiced dried pineapple
Frozen square of basil and cilantro - great for quick flavoring
Seaweed Rice Balls (Future Snack!)
TJ Greek Yogurt
TJ Whole Milk European Yogurt - Plain
Cheddar Cheese Curds
The not so loved
Dried Mango Strips - really hard
I guess that's it!
Red Room Closed
I found this out yesterday and I am really upset. The main reason being we bought a substantial gift certificate the week before Christmas for a family member and it is now worthless. I loved this restaurant and supported it from the beginning. They should have said they don't sell gift certificates if they had any idea (which they should have) they may be in financial trouble. Totally unacceptable.
Any cool spots to drink in Pittsburgh?
Yes to Embury if you want classic cocktails.
Bloomfield Bridge Tavern, 31st Street Pub - Strip District, Thunderbird Cafe in Lawrenceville
Ideas for Pittsburgh rehearsal dinner for large group (45-50 people)?
I would agree the Firehouse Lounge would be cool.
I also recommend checking out the Matress Factory on the Northside for something totally different and cool.
Legends of the North Shore - by AGH - may have a private room to rent as well.
