What cookbooks have you bought recently, or are you lusting after? September 2013 edition!

I have Celiac, which sucks as prior to diagnosis I practically lived on bread, so right now I'm wanting Nicole Hunn's soon-to-be-released gluten-free bread book. I equally want Ottolenghi: The Cookbook; The Artisan Jewish Deli at Home; and Antojitos: Festive and Flavorful Mexican Appetizers.

Non-Wedding-Wedding Venues/Food Ideas

I don't want a wedding, yet one must be had, so we've decided to keep it intimate and invite 50 of our nearest and dearest to an 'Autumn party', with no mention on the invite of it being our wedding.

My BFF will officiate the service, then we'll eat, drink and all the rest, having spared ourselves of the usual accoutrements of weddings, including gifts - we don't need anything from our loved ones but their presence. Hell, I don't even need that, but I'll shut up now.

I had a few ideas, initially - one being we do it at our house, then get food trucks to pull up and feed the crowd - only problem with that is we recently moved out of NYC and there is a distinct lack of food trucks in Central NJ.

Another idea was again in our house, catered, with antipasto & brick-oven pizza set up on rental tent/tables/chairs in our yard. But weather is unpredictable, and 50 people in our little house at one time will be uncomfortably crowded.

So now we're leaning towards Porta in Asbury Park, which seems like it could be a great, fun place and meets the requirements - good food, non-cliché venue, private room, BYOB and reasonably-priced.

I'm wondering if anyone else has any ideas along those lines of restaurants/venues in Central NJ or shore area that we might consider.

Thank you!

Peruvian red dipping sauce with vinegar and onions

Thank you so much! Mmmmm....looking forward to trying this! I don't think the one at Flor de Mayo has tomatoes, but this recipe seems most like what that sauce tastes like to me, except it's very, very thin, really a liquid with onions in it - soaking the onions just might be the trick!

Peruvian red dipping sauce with vinegar and onions

Thanks, Todao! That isn't the one I am referring to, but it sounds damned tasty and I'm going to give it a try!

Basic Napa Cabbage Kimchi (Kimchee)

Wow, this looks exactly like my favorite kimchi from a place in Flushing, but I never even noticed if it has shrimp in it. I'm going to make this - it looks amazing. I can't get enough of this stuff! Thanks!

Peruvian red dipping sauce with vinegar and onions

I love the thin, red, vinegary dipping sauce served at Flor de Mayo in NYC with their delicious roast chicken. It seems so easy to replicate, yet I've been unable to do so...and I can't find a recipe for it online - it seems the sauce more commonly served with Peruvian chicken is a creamy one, and recipes for that abound...it is wonderful, but it's not what I want.

Does anyone know how to make the very simple red vinegar dipping sauce I'm thinking of?

Thanks!

Week in Pittsburgh, No Car

Thanks, boomfleisher! Had a very tasty (and cheap!) late lunch at Mexico City - guacamole (made at the table), fresh Soupa de tortilla (rich and delicious) and a chicken taco...and a tamarind Jarrito because I love those yucky things. My husband had a spicy shrimp and rice dish that was also very good and wicked hot. Great find, thanks for the suggestions!

Week in Pittsburgh, No Car

I'll be in Pittsurgh (staying at the Sheraton in Station Square) for a week. During the day my husband and friends will be at a conference, so I'm on my own without a car until early evenings. I've never before been to Pittsburgh. Any suggestions on what to do/eat? I'd like a good (preferably healthy) breakfast place, a cafes for tea, places for lunch, etc...in general, delicious food where one would feel comfortable dining alone...thanks!! Also, any dinner suggestions are appreciated, too!

WD-50 is disgusting. Right? Anyone?

A friend was in town and eager to go to WD-50. I'd been there before, each time leaving unimpressed. I hoped this time around the experience would be different.

Our waitress was charming and lovely but, yet again, the food read better on paper than it tasted in the mouth, and the mediocre (and wicked expensive) wine left us all underwhelmed.

I won't say the food was disgusting; there were a few good confections, but nothing divine or even memorable.

We went out for kielbasa and beer afterwards. 'nough said.

What's the worst (nice) restaurant you have been to?

Has to be WD-50. Our waitress was charming and lovely, but the food and mediocre (and wicked expensive) wine left us all underwhelmed. We went out for kielbasa and beer afterwards. 'nough said.

Thanks so much, everyone, I appreciate it!

Ladypandora, your list is fantastic - wow! My belly and I (and my husband) thank you. I'm excited to try your haunts.

And I'm going to wean myself from saying I live in 'Hudson Heights'...hee...

Where to eat in Hudson Heights?

Hi Leah - Hudson Height's boundaries are J. Hood Wright Park (173rd Street) and Fort Tryon Park (Margaret Corbin Circle at 192nd Street), west of Broadway. When the cable guy came to hook me up he told me he doesn't care what 'we' call it, he calls it the Bronx :)

Where to eat in Hudson Heights?

Hi all - just moved up to Hudson Heights...love it so far, but where does one get a good meal that they haven't cooked themselves at home?

Thanks for any info you've got!
