Baker's Yeast in Toronto?

You can try going to European grocery/deli stores. The one I used to go to is Karpaty Pastry & Deli Ltd in Mississauga. Not sure if they still carry it. It was about $2 for a cube.

Actually the thick fish noodles just taste like fish balls, instead in noodles shape, have "bouncier" texture, and a hint of herbs mixed in the fish paste (assuming it's basil added). Same as shrimp noodles, thick vermicelli is added to the soup as well. If you like fish balls, you'll definitely like fish noodles!

Do report back. Enjoy!

Super Fresh Tofu?

I know eh. Similar incidents happened to me all the time. It's very embarrassing indeed.

For tofu places like this, I tend to go there during weekends when they are busier. Which means the tofu won't be sitting in the kitchen for a long time.

Super Fresh Tofu?

Oh yeah, I love their 'dow foo fa'. It's one of the best in the GTA. I'm sorry to hear that you've got a disappointed experience. It might be their off day.

I would believe their takeout prices should be similar to the dine-in prices. I always buy soy milk to go whenever I visit Market Village, and I pay the same price as dine-in.

I've been to this place quite a few times, and I absolutely agree with you that the place is a little gem! For some reasons, either people do not like fish soup or the advertisement is not enough, this little noodle place does not receive the attention it deserves.

Besides the noodles, I also like their wild rice with fish soup. Their soy milk with grounded almond is delicious as well.

cake boxes?

If you are just buying a few boxes for the holiday baking, and don't want to go through the hassle of getting a membership at McCall, you can always go to Bulk Barn (any location should do). It comes in various sizes, all plain boxes. Michaels might have some. I'm not sure if they are more expensive than Bulk Barn's.

Eye Weekly on Ramen in Toronto

Not sure if they have improved the quality recently. I had tried its ramen a while ago and did not like it at all. The portion was small, and definitely not close to what a real Japanese ramen should taste like (I have had ramen in both Tokyo and Osaka before). Having close to $9 for a small bowl of mediocre noodles is definitely not a good deal in my opinion. Kenzo is a better choice.

Daikoku reminds me of that ramen place at the Commerce Gate on Hwy 7 many years ago.

Johns Barbeque Chinese Restaurant - Surprisingly good Cantonese cuisine!!

Thanks for your detailed post. I'll for sure give it a try soon for dinner.

Just curious, where is Tanchikee? I'm pretty bad at translating it to Chinese name. I always like Peak Top's roasted pork and char-siu. How does this place compare to it? Thanks.

'Linguine with Smoke duck breast, wild mushrooms and truffle oil cream sauce' sounds very yummy already. I should give it a try when I go to downtown. Thanks!

Really Ridiculously Good (Looking ) Italian...

I drove by one day after visiting Vaughan Mills mall and saw the sign. Wasn't sure if it's the same one as Yonge/Eg location. Do you know if they take reservations on the weekend?

Yes, that's exactly what I am looking for. Thanks. I'll need to see when McCall is opened to public.

ISO large parchment paper

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for parchment paper large enough to fit in a large baking tray. I usually see one from a roll (like saran wrap), but not in boxes or batches. Hope someone would know. Thanks.

Baking accessories

You can try Golda's Kitchen in Mississauga. It used to be located at Matheson & Mavis, now they have moved their location to 2885 Argentia Road, Unit 6 (east of Winston Churchill Boulevard at Highway 401).

Good luck with your searches.

Ruelo - A new French Patisserie in Richmond Hill

The pastry chef from Ruelo is a very young Chinese lady who has completed Le Corden Bleu patisserie program in Ottawa. One well-known wedding cake chef once told me that the Le Papillon chef has actually more of an Australian style than French style!

I actually didn't know Le Papillon was closed down and moved to LOUIS XIV. I walked past by on Saturday evening after having my Ruelo cake and the matcha red bean mousse mini sample. Didn't want to eat too much desserts before dinner. :) BTW, I liked the Ruelo cake, but not so much with the macha mousse sample ~ it was quite bland, and the pastry bottom was a bit soggy/soft. The chocolate mousse, on the other hand, was quite smooth and not too sweet.

Really Ridiculously Good (Looking ) Italian...

Hi Charles,

I've been reading your posts for quite a while, and have agreed on your recommendations. Can you suggest me some other good Italian places that are at similar price range as Tutto Bene but located closer to the west-end (Mississauga/Oakville) or downtown area? Pasta made in house would be good.

Thanks very much in advance! I know it's like the opposite intention of the original poster.

Olive Press Italian restaurant in OAKVILLE

Has anyone tried this restaurant recently? Last week when I was driving by this place on Dundas I noticed the entire parking lot was packed plus cars parking on the side of Dundas Street. It made me think that the food must be very delicious since so many people went there for dinner.

Would love to know any updates since last post, as I'm thinking of going there for my birthday soon. :)

Thanks!

Singapore Cuisine

I believe the chef is from Singapore so I'm sure the food is pretty authentic. I love their chicken rice and curry beef a lot too. On the other hand, the curry from Restoran Malaysia is also very tasty.

I have not tried black pepper and chili crab in both places though.

May be you can try Lion City in Mississauga (1177 Central Parkway West), or Restoran Malaysia in Richmond Hill (Bayview & 16th Ave)

Why don't you try Chodang Soon Tofu in Etobicoke? I've been there and I love their soon tofu. Unfortunately it is a small place, so it won't have a lot of choices.

downtown restaurants opening Sundays

Hi everyone,

Can someone give me suggestions for restaurants in downtown Toronto that are open on Sunday evenings? We are looking for a place to host a wedding shower for our friend.

Some places that are fun for girls would be great. We will be having a spa gathering close to Eaton Centre during the afternoon, so if we can stick within the general area would be even better.

Thanks in advance!

Which Congee Wong (or similar) is best in GTA?

Congee Dynasty used to be pretty good when it first opened. However its quality has gone way downhill in the recent months.
