Which KitchenAid mixer would be best for my mom?

Hi! Hoping someone can provide a good recommendation for my mom's mother's day gift. Her decades-old and much beloved KitchenAid stand mixer is on it's way out the door, and I'd like to replace it with a newer KA model.

Having looked around a bit, though, I'm not sure what version would be best for her. Typically mom will use the mixer for everyday home cooking, though she will on occasion mix up baked goods in quantity -- filling for two pumpkin pies, for example. She doesn't like my stand mixer (not a KA) because it will toss ingredients out of the bowl if you don't use the shields on top. She does want white, so the color question isn't in play and she doesn't want a bowl that she has to use a lifter with.

Thank you for your help!

Kelly

No/Low Carb Meals

Sounds like that might knock out my mac and cheese craving! We're new to this way of eating and missing some of our favorite dishes a lot. What brand of tofu do you use? Could you take a stab at writing out the recipe? (I've had a lot of disastrous kitchen experiments this week--need all of the help I can get!)

Specialty (low-carb) baking ingredients in MSP?

I'm searching for a Minneapolis (preferred) or St. Paul source for some baking ingredients. (My new low-carb regime needs some serious flavor injection, so it's experimentation time!) Looking specifically for things like wheat protein isolates (5000, 8000), oat fiber, resistant oat and corn starches.

There are many sources on-line but I am (a) impatient and (b) too cheap to express ship bulk ingredients. Any ideas for pleaces to try would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Kelly

Anyone eaten at Mariono's Deli in NE MSP?

We drive by there every night on the way home and were wondering if it was worth stopping in. . . Thanks!

Trevose Area Delivery

I'm staying in Trevose on a business trip. . . any suggestions for hotel delivery? Am open to anything chowish but don't have access to a car.

Thanks!

MSP - Brickhouse BBQ

Take out tonight for us as well. We'll be back. Maybe tonight. ;)

Sauce: yum yum yum yum
Pork Ribs: perfectly cooked, lean yet tender
BBQ Chicken: perfectly cooked, very moist
Beef Ribs: not lean enough for me, too much chew

We ordered too meals which were accompanied as described above. Next time we'll skip the meal part and just order the chicken and pork, which is sold by the pound. The slaw wasn't good and the fries were worse. But all is forgiven once you have another bite of the ribs.

Alas, the place was slow for a Friday night. Type2runner--thanks for the tips. Everyone else, please please please head out for some BBQ. This place is worth keeping.

Good Eats Along Light Rail (MSP)?

Hey hounds. . . so I finally took a ride on the light rail. I know, old news. But the dang thing goes so fast that I couldn't really see where the good chow might be.

So, what are your best recommendations within reasonable walking distance of the light rail line?

Best,
Kelly

Good Eats in Columbia Heights, MN?

Made you look! Seriously, folks, there's a good ice cream place up here called Grandpa's. Grandpa himself hand packs the pints. I am hoping that he will adopt me some day. The ice cream has a high percentage of butterfats and thus is super smooooooth.

This isn't a place with crazy flavors. Just traditional and they do them very well. Our favorites so far are the malted vanilla (yes, you got it, malted milk balls crushed into premium vanilla ice cream) and the basic chocolate. Hubby likes the strawberry but I found it a bit too sour. Brownie something or other just had too many different flavors going on.

Anyone else been here?

The Best That NW Iowa Has To Offer

Another option in the area is Hungry's, a steakhouse in North Sioux City. It's as basic as basic gets -- big old open grill in the center of the room, a salad bar with mostly lettuce, and baked potatoes the size of your head. It's rough around every edge (though they make a surprisingly fine martini), but they do grill a mean steak. The once-in-a-while fish specials also make for a fine meal.

No website, but here's the info. Address: 100 N 14th St, Dakota City, NE 68731

Phone: 402-987-3717

Sioux Falls and Sioux City

Sneaky's fried chicken. . . consistently exactly what you'd expect and thus highly recommended for Sioux City eats. Hungry's (a steakhouse) is actually right across the border into Nebraska. Don't look at the salad bar, don't ask for a glass with your beer, just order a big old steak and watch them do it up on the grill in the center of the room. Minerva's on Hamilton Blvd is a nice step up from the usual chain fare. Nothing unusual, but consistent and a nice atmosphere for chitchat. Bev's on the River has so-so food but the best riverview dining on the Iowa side.

Sioux Falls is a challenge. Can't help you on that one!

Have a great trip!

MSP--NE/C Heights Delivery?

We'll give Pizza Magic another try. I'm a sucker for a fun name. :) Which Broadway Pizza said they would deliver to NE? The one on Riverside delivered here once and then denied it the next time we called to order. . .

Thanks!

The Sarna's Report:

It looked a lot better than it ended up being.

Atmosphere: Absolutely wait until the smoking ban if you're a non-smoker. The smoking section isn't really very separate from non-smoking. The place sort of smells a little like a bar (good if you want that, not if you don't). Booths are comfy and I'd recommend that over a table. Bring a sweater if you tend to be chilly.

Food: Two in our party ordered the fried jumbo shrimp dinner. And the presentation was fabulous -- nicely plated shrimp, evenly browned and nestled into a bed of mashies. Topped with a nice nest of seasonal veggies. It started out so good! So promising! A few bites in, though, and we were disappointed. The shrimp, while very well cooked, didn't have any flavor at all--nor did the shrimp's coating. The potatoes were on the gummy side with chunks of what I suspect was raw (or at least not roasted enough) garlic and maybe even some garlic powder. The overall effect was not encouraging.

Husband ordered a "cubano roasted pork" dish. Again, the presentation was outstanding. But no flavor. None. And the pork was tender, not dry, all of the things which means so close.

The other person in our party ordered the ribs which were served with fries. Barbecue sauce was way to sweet--I suspect out of a jar or worse came with the ribs prepacked out of a freezer box. Fries were decent.

We might go back and order things a little more mundane. They do have a large menu of burgers and sandwhiches and such, which I think might be much better than what we ordered. It's a little more "sports bar" than the outside of the place or the menu suggests.

Sorry, guys. I so wanted this place to be a winner. . . .

The chinese report:

MSP--NE/C Heights Delivery?

Being a new homeowner is a beautiful thing. Really. But we miss our uptown delivery hotspots. We're in far Northeast, just on the border of Columbia Heights. And I can only say we've had the worst Chinese food ever and the worst pizza ever so far.

Is there any hope? Or is CH just a black hole of delivery?

Thanks for any leads.

MSP--Downtown Minneapolis Iced Latte?

It's a long story. I need to deliver the best iced latte that downtown Minneapolis has to offer. And I'm not a coffee drinker.

Any hints? Thank you!
