Cincinnati Dining Info

On your Monday easy lunch, may want to try one of Cincinnatis several chilli shops. Cincinnatti has it's own style of chilli, unique in flavor (includes Greek spices as well as unsweetened chocolate in some recipes) that it is famous for. I prefer it served 5way which is over spagghetii, with onion, kidney beans, and cheese. (the traditional way) it's definitely a flavor of cincinnatti you won't find elsewhere.

Also, by the judges keeping up the pressure, it drives the contestants to make better food, and it leads to some good comedic effect when they push for fine dinning dishes when given crap for ingredients. The judges do often praise when something goes right too. Some judges particular beefs can be funny though, like conant and raw onions.

The next iron chef is a fun show. I actually do like challenge sometimes, but think it's more looking for the times when someone fails horribly. (caketastrophies just are funny for some reason :) ) it's. Good show to have in the background while doing stuff on the web, etc.

As for chopped hate, several posts in this thread, plus been a number of random posts I've seen in other threads on this board. Maybe I'm just unlucky and finding the threads that don't like chopped.

Theres been some major hate towards yelp on CH, but I find it quite useful especially living in a smaller city. You really do have to take reviews with a grain of salt, but it really helps in getting a quick lay of the land in a new city, seeing where everything's located, etc.

Curious why SO many people on CH hate Chopped, yet love Top Chef. Personally, I like both shows. I think there is room on FN for both recipe type shows and competition type shows.

With the current recession, many people are cutting back on cable packages, or switching from tv to Internet, so not suprised to see a ratings dip, especially after earlier very fast growth.

Top Chef All Stars Reunion Show

One thing I liked also from this reunion show was an extra bordain comment on marcels desert in restaurant wars that got chopped out of the episode, describing the powdered coconut portion as the white flakes of underarm deodorant that get stuck in your underarm hair. :)

Top Chef All Stars Reunion Show

Seemed like the majority of the chefs were more with Tom, shaking their heads at Elias sugestions. Natural for Tom to be very defensive, especially on topic of using quality ingredients. That's something that not only hurts pride, can hurt the core of his business. The biggest defense I heard of Elia was dale supporting Elias criticism of Tom doing ads for diet coke, saying it was a bit of a sellout. Elias point was it's a very unnatural product, dales point was how Tom, being a famous chef is seen as a bit of a role model, thus should be careful about carelessly endorsing brands. Toms main point was he endorsed it because he used it personally and sold it in his restaurants.

Who's right and who's wrong? On the corn fed vs grass fed beef, will tend to side with tom when he says he uses grass fed, unless Elia comes up with actual names of who said he didn't (or others come forth with proof). But, as far as endorsing so ethng with diet coke, I especially take dales point of being a role model, need to carefully evaluate when/what to endorse and how much.

Toms point near the end was good too, anytime one speaks with the press, be careful and try to edit yourself, as it's very easy for things to be taken out of context and blown out of proportion.

All opinions IMHO of course. :)

They should of made an animated banner for his show with waves of foam rolling along the bottom.

Another favorite in the area I forgot to mention, Seoul Garden, in cuyahoga falls, state street. Great Korean food.

Best resturants in Akron, Oh?

Another couple places recommended:

Gasoline Alley: deli type food, over on Ghent Road.
Chowder House: in Cuyahoga Falls. be sure to try the Lobster Bisque, it's AMAZING!
Al's Corner Restaurant: In downtown Barberton Best Eastern European food around, IMHO.
Eye Opener: Great breakfasts, make your own omelets, green chilli hash.
Sugo: New Italian Bistro just opened in the Falls, on State street, same head chef as Chowder House
Flurys: Little hole in the wall place in C. Falls, known for their pancakes.
Rancheros Taqueria: In the Falls. Some of the most authentic Mexican food you'll find in Ohio. He has a separate specials menu with a number of interesting dishes (like Menudo (tripe soup), mole, etc.

For Mexican food, I'd recommend Rancheros Taqueria, quite cheap, and can't ask for more authentic Mexican food in Ohio. He has a "special" menu too, of more authentic dishes, like moles and menudo (tripe soup), etc.

Marcel's Quantum Kitchen

Just watched the motorcycle episode.

Yet ANOTHER foam (mac and cheese turned into cheese and cheese foam)! At this rate, betting minimum 1 foam per episode. :) The concept for the cheese noodles though was kinda cool though.

Marcel's top chef personality really shone through tonight, with him pissing off his cooking team by constantly being an ass. Wondering now if series limited to just 6 episodes because the others couldn't stand to work with him beyond that many. In this episode, two were already talking like they were ready to quit.

With the drink, I'd think the beer skin left over on the sphere would be kinda disgusting. Gooey beer just doesn't seem that appetizing to me.

Loved how he said his marshmallow ice cream thing wouldn't melt, yet the "food porn" shot of it, it was clearly quite melted. :)

Marcel's Quantum Kitchen

Is it me, or did they just melt the veil with a torch right before serving, making the fancy veil into just a puddle of sauce anyway? Sure looked like it melted and ran when they were using the torch on it.

I sometimes wonder, when he was sous-chefing, if he talked back to his head chef as much as he argued with the party planner who hired him in this last event. (Although, I do agree with Marcel, those gold plates were ugly)

Two episodes, and two foams. But, I guess it matches the event. A white, sticky foam is the expected end of a romantic interlude after all. :)

Top Chef All-Stars - Ep. #15 (Finale Pt. 3) - 03/23/11 (Spoilers)

Some of us who supported Carla still liked the Chicken Lady name when she does start to run around a bit crazily. :)

Funny thing is about the Chicken Lady phase of Carla, it doesn't always lead to doing worse than Zen Carla. Look at her chicken pot pie performance. Chicken Lady Carla side was out in full force, yet she did great with her meal. Look at the gulf coast support elimination challenge. It appeared to be Zen Carla in force, yet still she did badly.

Some people can thrive on super hyper manic energy states. I think Carla can thrive at times in that state.

I dunno. The name to me seems like it may be just lame and titillating enough to not offend too many customers, yet still out there enough to get lots of extra free press when (if) he expands into new markets.

What's Going On At Bon Appetit? When Will Changes Come?

I think it's part of the general malaise over the magazine industry as a whole. It's been in dire straights lately, with most brands likely to perish, at least in their current forms.

That guy was scary. Felt like he was going to end up stabbing someone if he competed much. But, I think TC should pick up one thing from him. He kept saying that if Irish chefs didn't like your food they'd just -bamf- flip the plate. Instead of just saying PYKAG, TC JT should end with flipping the losers plate of food. :)

I think she was thinking scotch bonnets would take the place of wasabi, but their types of heat are very different, and the level of heat is so high on scotch bonnets, you REALLY have to be careful using them. Wondering if the hamachi switch out to tuna at the last minute flustered her a bit, which, in such a stressful situation can often lead to mistakes in judegement being made.
