Yes, lots! 2 years ago, I couldn't find anywhere with a teudah. Last time we were there (~8 months ago), we brought food with us from town, but it turned out that almost every airport restaurant had one. Unless something has majorly changed since then, there should be plenty for you to choose from.

capon vs pullet?

Thanks for all your responses - what an interesting discussion! Both chickens were the same size (actually, the pullet was slightly heavier) and turned out identical, as far as I can tell.

capon vs pullet?

Please excuse my ignorance, but I am a vegetarian just starting to learn how to cook chicken...

I went to the local kosher grocery store and bought what I thought were 2 identical large whole chickens (~5lbs). When I got them home, I noticed that one is labeled as a "pullet" and one as a "capon".

Googling "capon" tells me that it's a castrated rooster, which can't possibly be kosher. So what is going on here? Are they really the same thing and just mislabeled? Any ideas? Thanks!

Where did the Et Al review go?

I'd also be very interested to hear people's opinions of this restaurant. I can't find any reviews online anywhere and am considering this place for my husband's birthday dinner.

Not quite Northern NJ, but Glatt 27 in Highland Park/Edison has them (in regular and whole wheat) for $21.75/box.

Thanks for all the tips! Do any of these places take reservations on Pesach? I seem to remember that Le Marais didn't last year...

Also, any word on Abigails?

Shabbos in Oslo, Norway

A quick google search revealed this scary report from the Federal Aviation Administration: www.fire.tc.faa.gov/pdf/tn06-18.pdf

"Tests were performed with individual MREs in an open environment and multiple MREs in a confined space to examine the potential hazard associated with their use in an aircraft cabin. The tests also examined accidental activation of FRHs in a confined area aboard the aircraft, such as in overhead storage bins or a cargo compartment. Temperatures in excess of 215°F and violent ignition events were observed. It is evident from the tests that the release of hydrogen gas from these MREs is of a sufficient quantity to pose a potential hazard onboard a passenger aircraft."

I think I'll be exploring alternative options!

Shabbos in Oslo, Norway

Yes, I have read all of those threads. Opinions seem very mixed.

I just picked up a couple to try out - the LaBriute "Cheese Ravioli" and "Vegetarian Honolulu Nuggets with Pineapple".

Assuming they're edible and I pack them in my case, does the self-heating mechanism cause any problems with airport security here or abroad? It's not potentially "explosive"?

Shabbos in Oslo, Norway

Interesting.

I did eventually get a response from someone from the shul (who said kosher food is only available in frozen form in the shop, which is not open Fridays anyway, and that there are many vegetarian restaurants in Oslo). I also heard from the caterer. No response from Chabad yet.

As you suggested originally, I will probably bring my own food and eat in my hotel room.

Any suggestions for vegetarian main dishes that travel well and don't need refrigeration or heating? I can supplement with locally-bought fruits and veg.

Thanks for your reply, Adina.

That's really disappointing. I was really hoping they'd be more responsive and willing to help a visitor with Shabbat meals (especially since Chabad seems to only have started up there a few years ago). Shame.

Shabbos in Oslo, Norway

Does anyone know about kosher food and/or Shabbos meal hospitality in Oslo? Spending Shabbos in Olso has become necessary for me after all, and the kosher store is not open on Friday when I arrive.

I've emailed the local Chabad and "Kosher Catering by Janki" as well as the general email for the community (DMT Oslo). No one has responded yet...

kosher food on Hurtigruten cruise

I'm contemplating taking a Northern Lights cruise next year on the Hurtigruten line in northern Norway. I've gotten differing responses from company representatives about the availability of kosher food (I haven't even mentioned that I'm also a vegetarian!). Can anyone advise me how to handle this situation? Would I just be best off if I packed ready-to-eat vegetarian kosher meals and protein bars, and rely on them providing uncut fresh fruits and veggies to supplement? Also, does anyone know about milk in Norway, and whether chalav stam there is ok there for those who drink it in the US? And are there any other major kashrut concerns that I might be forgetting to consider? I will not be there over Shabbos, so fortunately that's not an issue.
TIA!

Back to Nature on the Jersey Shore

Is Back to Nature now called Down to Earth?

We were there recently, and we had a pretty lousy experience. We ordered sweet potato fries (great), Greek salad (ok but nothing special), and cheese ravioli. The pasta was seriously disgusting - it was soft and gummy, like paste. The waiter was miserable and clearly in a bad mood, and if we weren't worried about what he might do to our food, we would have sent the pasta back. I'm still mad at myself that I didn't (and I'm annoyed that we paid the full 18% gratuity that they tacked onto the bill).

Not a good dining experience, and we won't be returning any time soon.

Trader Joe's chocolate chips

"Oddly they don't taste as good uncooked as some chips do, but baked in goodies they are heavenly."

I'm so glad you said that. I have always heard how great they are, so I bought a bag a few months ago and tasted them. I thought they were kind of "eh" so I didn't bake with them. I will definitely try again now.
