Birthday Celebration for 15-20

Blech. Family-style, red sauce Italian slop for tourists. You can get much more sophisticated lunch options for less money.

Birthday Celebration for 15-20

Any preferred area of the city?
Age group?
Ambiance you'd like?
Day of the week? Time of year?
Speeches/toasts? Walking between tables and visiting?
Is prix fixe OK?

Did you see poster kathryn's recent list of good value lunch specials?

I'd suggest you call and work with Maialino, which offers 3 courses for $35

"Bottom line is that I think you may have gotten bum advice here. Perhaps because the original number was 8-15 people."

-------------

OP already said they knew 50 pp were coming. Why are you so intent on the customers being wrong? I notice you don't even seem to be from NYC or post on restaurants. Is there some other reason you are so pro-Katz? Just Wondering, Just Visiting.

Lunch near the NYPL (42nd and 5th)

For healthier fast food I like Roti Mediterranean Grill and gosh they are all so damn chirpy and friendly!

If you want an eat-in break: The Hotel Andaz Fifth Avenue has a long table at the front where you can walk up for well done sandwiches, daily special, wines. In AM or afternoon recharge, good coffee, drawn espresso. I think you can even get the entire menu and rather quickly. Nice, open windows for a hit of sunshine.

EDIT: Looked at menu I posted; $20 turkey sandwich may be ridiculous for a student / post grad. Or anyone for that matter.

I recall you thoughtfully solicited comments. You arranged the group's visit in advance, no? You didn't - all 50 of you - walk in at once, or even trickle in?

He doesn't even own it.

It is owned by the General Electric Pension Trust..."

Decent restaurants near Jacob Javitz?

There really aren't any options for 'run out, grab something good and quick, run back'.

For the most part, the recs being shared are 2 avenues away and/or 5+ blocks.

On 11th Avenue and 30th St in the Ohm residential building there is a deli called Hampton Marketplace where you can get sandwiches, mixed salads. Nothing special.

Friedman's on tenth avenue is new:

In the Terminal building on 11th Avenue and 28th Street, there is a 'wichcraft.

Also in the terminal building is Porchlight which serves lunch - http://porchlightbar.com/

If you have time, Gotham West Market is ten blocks north: http://gothamwestmarket.com/

good place for a solo woman to get a drink

It's NYC - everyone dines and/or drinks alone at one point or another - visitors on business, locals just stopping in or waiting for a friend/spouse to get off work. Really, it's no big deal whatsoever. And there are great bartenders who enjoy sharing their knowledge to keep you occupied. or just thumb through your phone like everyone else. Have a good evening.

Babyshower brunch

Price? What part of Manhattan? Saturday when? THIS Saturday or in October?

All makes a difference.

This doesn't come up that often but there are a few standards that are often suggested - Alice's, Sarabeth's, Lady Mendls... Search 'shower'.

Shorts! - And Reservation Timing Help

I'd say Otto they'd not feel out of place. The others, shorts are rare in my experience. And scream bumpkin tourist usually.

EDIT: For women it's just as comfortable to wear a sundress. Unfortunately, men in shorts either look sloppy or ready for the golf course. Very few men can carry off shorts in a more urban setting.

Manhattan visit planning - Phase I

Also, please clarify the details of your budget.

If it's $100 all-in for TWO PEOPLE PER DAY, we're not going to recommend sushi or a steakhouse, for example. We'd focus on cheap eats like pizza, falafel, dim sum etc.

Whoa. There's a blast from the past. 90's haunt. Are you looking for sushi?

I notice from a previous post you seem to like that late 90s/ early 00s style in restaurants, so maybe Zuma?

Ways to liven up chili?

Things I've experimented with:
red wine as liquid (a big zinfandel)
Beers of various kinds as liquid
coffee
chocolate (unsweetened, Mexican)
Worcestershire sauce
Maggi
Bacon of various levels of smoking
maple syrup
molasses
duck fat

I am sure there are dozens of threads (hundreds?) on chili that share ingredients. I'm far from a chili specialist.

Upland, Lartusi, Osteria Morini or Piccolo Angolo

Well, what's your mom like? I know mine would best like Piccolo Angolo as she is not a very sophisticated diner and would feel comfortable with the traditional Italian / Italian-American menu. I'm not into PA at all. I prefer a more interesting menu and approach towards food.

On the other hand, I have been wanting to try Upland and hear great things. I love L'artusi (especially their pastas and cool vibe), and like Osteria Morini but don't feel it's all that different than a few other places of its ilk.
