Restaurant Week is coming up soon and most of the menus are already posted

I hope so, too! The apps look particularly appealing....

Who do you follow on the Los Angeles board, and why?

No, not "everyone already knew about" the places exilekiss discussed (I being one of those who wasn't/isn't in the know).

Ooh, that's good news for those of us who like Lazy Ox. Although I doubt I'll make it out in time.

Thanks for future analysis of JiRaffe. =)

Taking my kid to visit USC end of next week. What's a cool

It was in my jr or sr yr that they put in the Jamba Juice and Krispy Kreme.

I think they were actually starting to build more sophisticated eateries just as I was leaving (of course). My vague recollection was that they were starting a cafeteria w/ blonde wood tables somewhere Parkside?

I remember that my on-campus "treat" was going to Upstairs Cafe. I felt so fancy b/c it had table service! Ah, to have such simple needs again....

Sherman Oaks dining 'renaissance' - will it draw Angelenos?

Really??? Wonder why....

I was thinking of a variety of snarky-but-accurate answers to post in response to this (not directed to you, maudie, but more about Calabasas), but....

I think of Calabasas as a suburb. And, as is the case w/ many suburbs (regardless of how affluent the residents are -- or wish to project they are), I think convenience and affordability trumps taste....

Besides, you left out Woodland Hills, which takes up a sizable chunk of space btw Encino and Calabasas.... ;)

Maybe the Dave & Buster's type place since I'm a sucker for games. =) Although I kind of like the fact that Dave & Buster's isn't necessarily "cool."

Didn't hit K-town until I was in grad school (or possibly even later....).

You know, EVK started doing "theme" nights once in awhile while I was there. The food was shockingly good (for EVK....). Was never too tempted by the Sizzler's across the street (although I used to love their cheese bread as a kid).

I was, unfortunately, all about Evil Kitchen (EVK) and then, later, Cafe 84.... and then hoping my friends w/ cars would take me to Little Tokyo.

Pasta Roma was also big when I was at USC, although I can't in good faith recommend it to anyone. It's not inedible; it's just not... good.

I can see that since the food is good. =) I used to over-order, um, everywhere, but I've been much better about curbing that over the past 1-2 yrs. Better for the wallet and the waist line. ;)

But they have AOC listed. Haven't multiple other posters here stated that there is little savings involved in their menu?

Go elsewhere (unless she's going into business, architecture, or engineeering). Going to that blasted school is the single biggest regret I have in life.

Back on topic.... Little Tokyo may be a fun excursion (although I don't think too many undergrad students are eating there).

Times have changed since I was a Trojan.... I couldn't afford many of those places as an undergrad.... And some of those places didn't exist yet....

Steak 'N Shake coming to Santa Monica

Thanks for the response. Based on the comparisons below, I think I'll stick w/ Burger Lounge for now.... (I think Five Guys is fine, and I've spoken a lot about how I don't like In-n-Out....). I had the mini-burger (or whatever it's called) at BL, which was just fine for me (and not too pricey at all).

Dirty, do you know how it compares to Burger Lounge? Just tried the latter yesterday and thought it was pretty good.

Green Zone - Organic food on Valley

Tried this place yesterday. Wasn't aware, until I did a search, that this place has been around since 2007. Our family had the hainan chicken (me), spicy wontons, pork chop rice, chive potstickers, seabass salad, beef satay and enoki soup. All were quite tasty. I particularly liked the spicy wontons (which came w/ nice helping for crushed garlic on top) and sprinkled the sauce over my rice.

Food seems (to me) significantly fresher and lighter than the typical SGV restaurant. I was also surprised by how all the waitstaff spoke English and how the menu had markings for vegan choices.

Parking is a pain.

Will definitely be returning....

Good idea to skip In-n-Out (I know it has many, MANY fans on the board, but I think it's totally unexceptional).

BTW, I know you're from Montreal, but do you know much about the food scene in Toronto? My partner and I will be visiting in a month, and I'm trying to pull together some ideas (the purpose of the trip is relaxation, and food is secondary). I'm starting to do a search on the Ontario board and will post some ideas. I'd be interested in your feedback....

ipsedixit's Top 10 Dim Sum

I don't actually think that's just your opinion. My HK friend can't stand XLB (or sen jiang bao and the like), and I think that's a cultural thing. When I told my parents (from Taiwan) about my friend's aversion to XLB, my parents simply laughed and said, "Of course he does; he's Cantonese."

However, IMHO, since dim sum patrons don't consist solely of Cantonese/HK clients, the XLB has found it's way to the menu. They definitely weren't around even 5 yrs ago, let alone 10-15 yrs ago....

I also agree that since XLB isn't a signature dish for Canto style places, they often end up subpar. It's kind of like ordering a hamburger in France.... Not sure what the point is.
