Williamstown Restaurants

I'll be visiting the Clark museum and having dinner afterwards. Any recommendations for a casual restaurant?

Dinner Rec in Albany- Near Medical Center

While you didn't ask about lunch, I must mention Debbie's Kitchen (456 Madison Ave). It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the hospital. Lark street is a major cross street nearby. If you have time, you can take your food to eat across the street in Washington park. They have fantastic sandwiches. If you go, save room for the chocolate peanut butter bar (or any of the brownies or cookies).
A recommendation for dinner is Peking restaurant. It's right near Cafe Madison. I've always liked what I have ordered there and especially like their dumplings.

Picnic ideas

I'm providing the food for a picnic before an upcoming concert. I have some ideas but would love to hear of any new ones. I'd like to keep it relatively low in fat but all ideas are welcome. Thanks!

Interstate 87 lunch spot

The Ripe Tomato in Malta is a good restaurant and family friendly. My college graduation was celebrated there with 5 young kids attending. It's off exit 12 when you are heading north.
Here's the link to their website:

Pig Roast

The oven and grill are conventional size. Thanks for the tip on the breed of pig...I had no idea and will ask my butcher about it.

Pig Roast

I'd like to cook a whole pig at a gathering for about twenty people. I'm not sure whether to cook it in the oven or over a grill. I know the latter requires some extra planning, which I'm happy to do. What size pig do I need? Any suggestions, recipes, or advice on the preparation?

Lunch Spots in La Jolla

The Cottage has wonderful breakfast and brunch foods. My parents used to live in Southern California. It was always a given that we would eat at The Cottage at least once or twice when I visited them. It's one of my favorite restaurants!

Alton Brown

I can't sit through one minute of his show with the inane conversation and all the goofy camera shots. For anyone wanting to learn the science behind cooking (and more) without the insult to one's intelligence, they should turn to On Food and Cooking by Harold McGee.

Restaurants in Hudson Valley

The American Bounty Room at the Culinary Institute is quite good. You may need to plan ahead as it can be tough to get a reservation at the last minute.

Greenwich-Manero's Butchers Back in Business

Mmmm...my mouth is watering remembering the many trips as a kid (and adult) to Maneros. That garlic bread, fried onions, and gorgonzola salad was worth the trip alone! I passed this link on to my parents and siblings and we are all overjoyed to see there is this establishment to pass on these delicious foods. Thanks everyone for the info.

Beginner's French Cuisine?

Capsouto Freres, in Tribeca, have a number of the dishes that you mentioned. They have good French food. It's a low key and comfortable place to dine.

Recent meal Cafe Tamayo, Saugerties, NY

I haven't been to Cafe Tamayo in a number of years and was wondering how it has been lately. Any recommended dishes (including dessert)?

Homemade Marshmallows-storage question

Dust the marshmallows (all sides) with a generous amount of powdered sugar. This has worked for me in the past.

fillings for layer cakes - want some new ideas

I like to layer a white cake with a fruit curd, i.e. lemon, orange, or passion fruit, and an accompaning buttercream. You simply take some of the curd and add a bit to your buttercream. So you have a layer of cake, a layer of curd, and a layer of flavored buttercream. You can make the layers as thin as you like. This is a simple, elegant, and tasty way to layer a white cake.

For decorating, I ice the sides and top with the buttercream, pipe a shell border around the top edge, and then spread a thin layer of the curd in the middle.
