I have to echo that Sycamore House in BSL is outstanding! We ate there twice and had amazing food both times. Service is stellar.

Great Breakfasts and Quick Lunches AT the Riverwalk in SA

We wandered around the Riverwalk one morning trying to see if there was anywhere worth eating at. We almost gave up and went to Starbucks when we happened across the Zuni Grill and lots of people sitting outside eating what looked to be great breakfasts.

We were not disappointed, in fact this was the best breakfast we had on our cross-country sight-seeing trip! I had the South Texas Breakfast and hubby had the Eggs San Antonio. Both were flavorful and delicious. The potatoes were awesome, crispy outside, creamy inside, but not greasy in the least.

The service was OUTSTANDING! We had Lawrence as our server, who said he had been working on Riverwalk for more than 20 years and was a southern gentleman. The food was plentiful and cheap ($8.95) and the coffee was great. There is even the friendly duck that would wander up from the river and tap on your leg with his beak for a scrap from the table.

Lunch in Malibu

We LOVED Paradise Cove Beach Cafe for a late breakfast last week. We sat outside and took our shoes off and had warm sand under our feet. We frankly expected this place to be a typical tourist trap with great location, but bad food. We just happened upon it as we were driving up Highway 1, so we didn't know anything about the place.

The service was great: order taken quickly, friendly, but no too friendly; food arrived quickly, coffee replenished regularly and best of all, the food was great! I had the seafood omelet, which had fresh shrimp, scallops and crab. Hubby had the Huevos Con Tortillas, which wasn't spicy, but had good flavor.

We did the obligatory walk on the beach after we ate, which is in a stunning cove. The only negative is they charge $3.00 for parking even after validation by the restaurant.

Awesome breakfasts in LA, I can name two. How about you?

Griddle Cafe - http://thegriddlecafe.com. We arrived just after they opened at 0800 on Sunday and we were lucky to get seats at the bar. I had the Fiesta scramble, which was excellent and hubby had the Eggs Benedict, which he thought was excellent, except that the dish was swimming in hollandaise (freshly made and creamy), so best to ask for it on the side. The french press coffee was outstanding! Service was good, but not great, but they were very, very busy.

We loved the atmosphere of this restaurant and the service, but the food wasn't anything to write home about, just average. Based on reviews I had read I had high expectations, so was very disappointed...

The gyros were very good and that's what I would stick to at Mr Greek. We ordered two sampler platters and pretty much the only thing we enjoyed were the gyros. Everything else had little or odd flavors, like cinammon in the potato topping (instead of a traditional bechamel) to the moussaka with eggplant. Other than the gyros everything else was just meh. Also, it is a 2 out of 10 on atmosphere and it is bring your own booze.

"Wine Product": Is it a strange and horrible new phenomenon?

I just had to look up wine product after bringing home a couple of bottles of "wine" from the supermarket in the town I am visiting in Mississippi. I thought it was strange that they only had a selection of two different brands of wine, but I just figured that folks in MS were just not wine people as the supermarket had a big selection of beer.

I got home, started dinner and opened the Cabernet Sauv to breathe :-) I knew right away something was up as I smelled the bottle after I opened it and it smelled like Kool-Aid. I then poured some into a glass and it looked like Rose. One taste and I picked up the bottle to look at the label and saw the words, wine product, which led me to Bing and thus Chowhound.

The taste is like what I would expect a Boones Farm to taste like; sweet, no flavor, etc. It was certainly not wine. I paid $6.59 a bottle for it too. So, I think I will pour it out as it isn't even something I could add to a sauce or make vinegar from.
