Going to Oxford , OH next Fri. from Det. area

We stopped at the Corner Grill in Bowling green. I had the crawfish, like little poppers, and hubby a good breakfast. Such nice people. The cook made up a special remoulade for me as I had asked if they had any.
Heard from a Miami student that The Spot in Sidney is another place we must visit.

Los Angeles Restaurants in the 80's

OMG! We are returning to LA after 45 years in a couple of weeks and I spent hours trying to find The Marquis. My husband would take me there with clients occasionally and it was an amazing experience for a very young Pasadena wife. A fellow played a guitar and sang. Don't remember the food but it was fantastic people watching. A handsome fellow tried to pick up my college roommate saying he was Shirley McLain's brother. Yeah sure........

LA after 45 years

Scandia, with deep fried parsley, was the ultimate experience for a 22 yr. old Bostonian. I know we cannot replicate but we will be in town for a wedding 11/23, staying at the Millennium Biltmore. May I have a suggestion for Fri. night dinner. Not ethnic but perhaps seafood or game. We know we want to go to Langer's Deli, my husband's lunch spot, on Sat. Thanks.

Anyone have homemade olives in DTW?

My husband came home with a giant jar of green, really GREEN, olives for Costco recently. Can't tell you about them because I left them at the cabin up north. He says he sampled them and really liked them, hence the buy.

Great find for Up North diners in Walloon Lake Village

Went to the relatively new Barrel Back restaurant in Walloon Lake Village last week. A beautiful day to be on the lake from the second floor of the WL Marina. I have never been so impressed by the "space" of a restaurant -glorious views, giant glass rolling doors, which can open in temperate weather, central fireplace, outside balcony.
Reasonable prices for eclectic fare- tostadas of BBQ pork, personal pizzas, unique sandwiches. Nice not to have to go to Traverse for a new dining experience.

Do hidden gems exist in Mid-Michigan? (No worthy stops en route up north.)

We have enjoyed The Willow Tree in West Branch. Good prices for well prepared food. They also have one in Fountain Sq. in Saginaw.

Saginaw & Alpena

Rainsux, Plath's is a 1 1/2 hr destination for us once a summer. Heavenly, THICK smoked pork chops, bacon, jerky.
But what in the world is a tube steak at the IGA??

Poland (restaurants in Warsaw and Krakow)

In Krakow a week ago and had a wonderful dinner at Pod Baranem. I was so intrigued with the flavors in the beetroot soup that our waiter told me all the ingredients. Heavenly!

Carnival (Mexican) Market’s food counter in Pontiac, MI

We had a craving for barbacoa so gave Carnival market a try. Excellent flavor in the burrito but be warned, they are enormous. We should have asked. We also tried carnitas tacos. A couple of them would have been enough. Tonight its Mexican fondue - flour tortillas dipped in broiled Chihuahua cheese!

American or Canadian breakfast ideas that might be novel/interesting to European visitors, and are more interesting that bacon & eggs or French toast...

Two Japanese gentlemen were visiting us, one of whom spoke beautiful English and the other, not a word. After 24 hrs or so of the one doing all the translating, it was time for breakfast. He asked the other fellow what he would like and, as plain as could be he said, "Two eggs sunnyside up." We about fell over. We asked where he heard that and he replied a movie. It must have made quite an impression on him as that was all the English we heard from him all weekend!

Basil leaves galore

I plan to dry most of my basil. But first, a question. Is it better to tear or chiffonade the leaves or is that determined by your usage, ie. cooking, salad etc.

Has KFC's chicken pot pie changed? (thread begun April 2012)

Oh, but I got a new chicken/rice/bean Cantina thing today and I'm just now getting hungry. I asked for something not battered and it was good. I used to love those pies but the calories turned me off. Tried that pot of mashed potato, chicken, corn.....thought I had died...........ONCE!!!

Spring peas and ramps in SE MI {DTW}

We dug a 1/2 bag full of ramps last week in Lewiston area and found 2" black morels. With the rain the last few days and warm weather, you all should head north. Have never found either in this area but we do not comb the woods around here. Somebody offered a foraging trip near AA last year, I think. We grill our ramps and also make biscuits, using bulbs, stems and leaves.

Is it safe to eat the wild onion/garlic chives in my yard?

You may be describing what we, in Mi. and elsewhere, call ramps. They have become quite popular as a foraged food and many places are becomming over foraged. Professionals sell them at farmers' markets for $$$. What makes a professional? Someone who devotes many hours a day to the task of foraging, sometimes to the detriment of the crop, for the financial reward of a scarce crop sold to people who do not forage. If you do start a "patch" just take a few from each bunch. They can be used from their tops to their toes!

How to remove the bitter taste from Limecello

We have made lemoncello several times with great success, always careful to use only the rind with no pith. There was such a deal on limes last week we thought we would try it with limes. UGH! Bits of pith got in and it tastes quite bad. Any chance I can fix it?
