Casual but good near Treetops golf resort [Gaylord, MI]

Head 15 mins. east of Treetops on 32 to Johanisburg to Paul's Pub. They have great pub grub, fish fry, make your own pasta dish, steaks. Fast ,competent service and reasonable prices.

Gates Au Sable Lodge - Grayling

We, too, have enjoyed dinner at Gates Lodge this spring and are returning tomorrow night. Be sure to make a reservation.

Spring peas and ramps in SE MI {DTW}

We dug a 1/2 bag full of ramps last week in Lewiston area and found 2" black morels. With the rain the last few days and warm weather, you all should head north. Have never found either in this area but we do not comb the woods around here. Somebody offered a foraging trip near AA last year, I think. We grill our ramps and also make biscuits, using bulbs, stems and leaves.

Is it safe to eat the wild onion/garlic chives in my yard?

You may be describing what we, in Mi. and elsewhere, call ramps. They have become quite popular as a foraged food and many places are becomming over foraged. Professionals sell them at farmers' markets for $$$. What makes a professional? Someone who devotes many hours a day to the task of foraging, sometimes to the detriment of the crop, for the financial reward of a scarce crop sold to people who do not forage. If you do start a "patch" just take a few from each bunch. They can be used from their tops to their toes!

How to remove the bitter taste from Limecello

We have made lemoncello several times with great success, always careful to use only the rind with no pith. There was such a deal on limes last week we thought we would try it with limes. UGH! Bits of pith got in and it tastes quite bad. Any chance I can fix it?

Anyone tried Evan Street Station (DTW)?

We had a delicious Thanksgiving noonday dinner there about 6 years ago.
Attractive space, good service and acceptable price. Just saw their write up in a local travel mag.

Easter brunch outside Detroit, and morels

Looking for a not TOO expensive brunch out in the country where they might have ham and lamb. I remember a restaurant in Amherstburg, ON that would fill the bill called Ducks on the Roof, maybe 30 yrs. ago. Yikes! I'm dating myself but fancy buffets are not necessary.
By the way, some morels are being found Up North!

Mint Juleps

Going through Louisville tomorrow 3/22 for dinner somewhere. We want to have a julep! Where do we dine, not too fancy, but good traditional food?

6 for lunch before the Bean Pot in North End

Massimino's was the perfect spot. We were encouraged to linger after a delicious lunch. All orders were different and all fresh and flavorful.

Breakfast near Gvt. Ctr, State House

Cafe Delicato filled the bill nicely. Fast, fresh, filling. Only wish I had taked a propper fork with me.

Breakfast near Gvt. Ctr, State House

We will be staying in this area and do not want typical hotel food, at Parker House no less. Any good ides? I remember Bickford's a zillion yrs. ago.

6 for lunch before the Bean Pot in North End

Had hoped to go to Mama Maria's but not open for lunch. Am meeting family for a 4 hr visit before we go to the game. Where can we have a great, casual lunch, sit and talk, and not be driven out?
We would certainly still order wine.....

Small restaurant in North End?

Just talked to family in Boston and they had a b-day dinner at Mama Maria's last weekend. Guy who set it up has dined all over the world and that is his favorite Italian restaurant!

Holly,Mi lunch

We stopped at the Bittersweet Bistro for lunch on a Sat. and the place was BUSY. Delicious lobster bisque and I wished I had ordered a bowl. Creative selection of sandwiches and my beef and blue cheese was tantalizing with a bit of onion and savory sauce. What a discovery!!!

What's the difference in all the "Tex" foods?

Wahoo! We LOVED Texas! Ate at Bess Bistro in Austin and other fantastic places, including a "puffy taco" place in Austin. Taco Taco in San Antonio breakfast tortillas were like the tortillas you describe. We had never seen such thick, flavorful ones. And those food trucks in Austin......

What's the difference in all the "Tex" foods?

It was suggested by the Texas board that I raise this question on the Austin Board. There is Tex-Mex, West Texas Tex- Mex, Mexican and I suppose, some others. We are visiting in Nov. and I would like to know the difference. Thanks in advance.

What's the difference in all the "Tex" foods?

Thanks, shanagain, what is asadero? I am big on fresh Greek oregano. Is is similar to Mexican? I just made my first chili rellenos using fresh MICHIGAN poblanos and they were fantastic. I had always used canned. Can't wait for our trip to TX!

What's the difference in all the "Tex" foods?

There's Tex-Mex, Texan, West Texas Tex-Mex and a couple others I can't remember. We are making our first venture into San Antonio and Austin area in Nov. and I want to know what I'm ordering. I'm sure it will all be delicious!!

fresh buffalo mozzarella-Detroit Metro

There is an Italian market on Middlebelt or Orchard Lake , maybe around 9 mile, and they should have the real stuff. They also have great breads.

Texas thanksgiving

We will be in San Antonio for Thanksgiving, staying at the Emily Morgan Hotel. Would rather not eat "hotel" food for the big day. (Can always go back and flake for the games though)
Any recs for a Texas Thanksgiving?
Am seeing lots of ideas but want specifically Thanksgiving, a holiday kind of day.

Lovage, Sorrel and Thai Basil...I planted them, but will need some ideas on how to use

A friend gave me a lovage plant last year and I had no idea what to do with it. While in London, Eng. last summer I saw sweet pea and lovage soup on the menu. It was delicious. Waiter and I came up with cooked fresh peas, chick broth, lovage, bit of shallot. All simmered then blended and perhaps strained. Add cream, salt, pepper. Voila!!!

Casual but good near Treetops golf resort [Gaylord, MI]

Gobblers' is south of town and serves good, flavorful turkey with gravy, biscuits, etc. Diana's has moved their space to the north side of the street and serves very timely fare, i.e. quiche, soup and salad combos, chili, creative sandwiches. No alcohol. Bennethum's is deffinitely the place to go for a good dinner with varied selections, including appetizers and desserts.

Ramps - Metro Detroit

We came out of the Pigeon River area Monday with a small bag full but they are the size of green onions, no real bulbs yet. Morels are being found there too but quite small. Expecting rain this weekwnd so maybe....

Unwelcome squid "bonus" [moved from Home Cooking]

My favorite meal was in a village on the coast of Greece. The restaurant owner took us into his kitchen and opened 3 different drawers, offering us a choice of fish for lunch. I chose the squid. It was dipped in some light batter and deep fried. Of course it was caught that day. I have found cleaned squid at a fish market here in Detroit but have not tried cooking it as I'm sure I would be greatly disappointed. And I would not be gazing over the Agean Sea either.

Crepe batter...what's the chill for?

Is this the same reason for letting popover batter rest before baking? That takes more time in the AM when I am ready to get baking.

One night in Northwest Detroit?

Is the Hungarian pancake with goulash a new menu item?? We have been going to PVC for 30 yrs. but not recently. Aren't the prices AMAZING! And they put those kids through college!

Steakhouses in Northern Michigan

We have had excellent beef at Bennethum's on Old 27, just south of Gaylord at exit 279 off I-75.

Saginaw for foodies?

There is another Polish buffet restaurant in Bay City but can't remember the name. I think Krzysiak House is the larger one. Great place to stop for lunch on our way north but then I want to nap!

Fried clams on The Cape

We are crossing the Bourne bridge about noon tomorrow on our way to Orleans. Any suggestions for fried clams? We can take either 6A or the other route.

Visiting London and looking for restaurants...

After two weeks in the U.K. after not being there for 25 years, We were amazed and delighted to find the depth and quality of food available. Thanks to the posts here we ate very well.
Our favorite was Harwood Arms and waiter Benedict. It was a gastronomical experience. Much more pleasant enviroment than Chelsea Brasserie which was very "stuffy." Our first day was lunch at the Pig's Ear. Both of us exhausted but I had to try the veal marrow and it was truly Heaven on my palate.
J. Sheekey's for Sat. noon was white tablecloth and attentive service. We did not know that we should have walked on another 20 feet and gone in the door to the more casual side. Pea and lovage soup was 50 P less in there but I had never tasted lovage and it was worth it.
Sun. night supper seemed like a Welsh rarebit kind of night but did not know where to find it. Went to the Cross Keys Pub in our neighborhood of Chelsea and Neil, the chef, created a version he had learned at some fancy London restaurant where he had worked.
It was delicious!
We went to Borough Market by 10 AM on a Fri. and I was delighted to find a fellow selling raclette cheese that tasted like Real Swiss raclette. Would have loved to bring some home. Found the cassoulet fellow, told him about his popularity on Chowhound, and he profusely appologized for not making it that day. Too warm in the summer for cassoulet.Went across the road to Wright's for scallops as suggested on this site.
All in all, Chowhounders come through and yes, I did not need a concierge. Thanks all!
