Whatever happened to............? The forgotten glories of yesterday.

I can totally relate! I just went back to pictures from our last trip in 2011 to jog memory of a good place. I was able to match up our pictures to the website of "Les Fines Gueules."
Perhaps that is the answer---be a tourist (horrors) and take a picture of the place.

Ahh, c'est vrai.

And, my great American novel still has not been started.

If any other "forgotten places" come to mind, we are not leaving until November. Yes, I started research earlier than usual...must be an aging thing.

Another "oh my, I so agree" moment---I have always been a Parisien-at-heart, so I not sure that qualifies me to feel the same way. We have found some authentic places while wandering, but I aways feel the pressure of not squandering our dinner opportuities on chance. Although that's what we used to do years ago, it is more difficult now (quality-wise and also physical stamina!)
In any case, CH'ers have always been helpful.

We used to go to "Le Timbre" but now seems...?

Need recommendations in Paris

Thanks so much for your time, Parnassien!
I appreciate your in-depth and varied response---just what we need.

Maximillien, by slightly more upscale, I meant more formal than a bistro. Thanks for your suggestions.

Need recommendations in Paris

for good neighborhood French restaurants, without hype, not discussed in the NY Times, or seen on the Food Channel. Slightly upscale, and/or innovative will also be considered.
Many thanks!

Oh, I so agree with you!
That having been said, we are returning to our favorite city once again (we go every 2-3 years) and really would like recommendations for the antithesis of a Chez L'Ami Jean or Frenchie. Good, neighborhood places, or even some a bit more upscale, without the hype. Staying in the 6th--know my metro.
Merci.

Excellent meal in Wicker Park, Chicago

The decor was quite modern, mostly black and white, and well done. Check our their website. We had an excellent red wine and and a brandy--both excellent with knowledgeable help from staff. We were there on a Wednesday evening and it was not crowded. Service was attentive. We will definitely go back when next in Chicago.

Berlin--authentic, indigenous mix of fine and "buerglich" suggestions needed

"Dada Falafel" on Linienstra├če 132---really good plates of variety of middle eastern specialities.

Berlin--authentic, indigenous mix of fine and "buerglich" suggestions needed

No, my husband only told me about it after we left the restaurant. A similar thing happened in Vienna where the waitress told my husband the same thing about a tip while I was away from the table---again, she knew I spoke German. I have heard other stories like this.
On a much more positive note: The people (both in the tourist trade and not) were genuinely friendly and helpful in Berlin. Also, we had a great lunch at a falafel restaurant on Oranienstr. ... have got to look up the name.

Berlin--authentic, indigenous mix of fine and "buerglich" suggestions needed

Since we live in NY metro area we are used to gourmet food, Michelin or not.
Perhaps the "trying too hard" reference was more about the sometimes silly, superfluous presentations that were obviously trying to impress. The food was good, but not outstanding.
The 5 % comes from many different German relatives. My husband usually tips 10 % on top of bill...sometimes more if service is excellent. I just wonder if a German would have received the same bill....I am a native German speaker, my husband is not, which was obvious at dinner.

Berlin--authentic, indigenous mix of fine and "buerglich" suggestions needed

Short Berlin report:
Marjellchen: Good, solid Prussian style food. excellent duck and mushrooms in cream sauce.
Hartmann's Tried a little too hard to be gourmet and hip, but good food nonetheless
Engelbecken: Wonderful schnitzel and Spargel
Renger Patzsch: OK food, BUT: the only restaurant we encountered a clearly misleading and incorrect statement on the bill. Our credit card bill stated in English: "Tip is not included." Tip is always included and additional tip is up to customer ---usually 5% over bill. Not nice!

Vienna: Need help choosing restaurant - Calling Strumi!

Went to Walter Bauer for our anniversary last year---it was wonderful and romantic as well. I believe we had a lovely Gruener Veltliner there.
We also went to Zum Finsteren Stern--it was good but not spectacular. Loved Kutschker44 and the more traditional Gmoakeller!
Hi Sturmi! Going to Berlin this year and have started research. Any thoughts?
