Dinner Rec w/Good Vegetarian Option

I second Muzita, or even next door--Soltan Banoo. Great Persian, and most entrees offer Tofu as an option. I love their goat cheese salad. Both restaurants offer veg and non-veg for a mixed group. Have fun :)

The Experience @Blue Point Coastal Cuisine - Molecular Gastronomy invades San Diego

karaethon,
Great write-up! This sounds really fun and interesting, and like something my boyfriend would have LOVED to do for his approaching birthday. I called them to ask about it and was told they haven't done that since May. I'm very confused now. Didn't you dine on the 15th of this month? Did I not use the magic password?? Kinda bummed and pissed at the same time.

Whisknladle coming to Little Italy?

Right? Hopefully they'll stay open a bit later than that--I could see myself heading down later on weekend evenings for drinks and light bites...

I'm just glad there will be a new kid in the neighborhood, and--no racism here--a kid that's not Italian! I mean, I know it's Little Italy, but I'm excited for some more variety :)

Honestly, you'd know better than I would! Too bad though--about the oxygen bar. Love me some oxygen on a Friday night out :)

Whisknladle coming to Little Italy?

Pretty sure it's the stone facade on the west side of the street between Cedar and Date. I believe the address is 1646?? Across from Buon Apetito. Not positive though :)

Whisknladle coming to Little Italy?

Anyone else hear anything about this? I think it would make an excellent addition to India Street!

I was wrong about Searsucker. It's not (consistently) good.

Good question--I think I would recommend Neighborhood and Zanzibar. Not enthusiastically, but I would.

Looking for inexpensive - moderate food near downtown Westin, w/caveats

Will you be here Saturday morning? If so, I can't think of a better morning spent downtown than at the Little Italy Farmer's Market. Plenty of cheap eats and free samples!! It's definitely walking distance from your hotel. Market favorites include panini, crepes, tamales, fresh bread, cheese, thai coconut pancakes (so naughty, but worth it!), and there are a couple food trucks that I can't vouch for since I haven't tried them yet. At the very west end of the market, there's a rotisserie truck that does bbq chicken--perfect for the teen! Live music, lots of people watching, and plenty of sweet treats for dessert round out your morning. Hopefully the sun will make an appearance :)
Good luck, and have fun in SD!

Looking for CSA Opinions

I agonized when I was looking for a CSA last year, and when it finally came down to it, I went with Be Wise. Honestly, it was the best decision we've ever made. I chose Be Wise for a few reasons:

~ Fruit. I liked what Suzie's Farm was all about, except they offer very little fruit--a huge deal breaker for me. With Be Wise, we get oranges almost every week, strawberries and other berries (and cherries!) when in season, avocados often, apples often, peaches/nectarines when in season and either lemons or limes weekly.

~ The pick-up system worked for us. We live in a secure building, so the farms that did door-to-door drop off wouldn't work. I work on weekends so the farms that set up pick-up locations at our closest farmers markets (Little Italy or Hillcrest, which are on Sat and Sun, respectively), weren't going to work for us. With Be Wise, we pick up our box at a nearby location (it's someone's home) and our pick-up time really works for us.

~ I thought it was priced reasonably. $25 for a small box and $30 for a large box. You have the option of weekly or bi-weekly, and you can opt out of a couple weeks if you know you're going to be out of town. I believe most CSAs offer this opt-out as well.

Also, since we've joined, there have been a few things that have kept us with Be Wise:

~ Herbs every week. Love herbs :)

~ The few correspondences I've had with them regarding my account or payment have been pleasant. I haven't had any problems as of yet with my weekly orders or with payment, which has surprised me--I feel like running a CSA and dealing with all of the orders/drop-offs/etc. could get extremely tedious and mixed-up. Hasn't happened yet, knock on wood ;)

~ The quality of the produce is amazing. We've done taste-tests with store-bought produce and our CSA share, and guess which one always wins. It lasts longer as well.

~ The variety is also pretty impressive. I don't think I could tell you what my favorite is--there's just so much and I love it all. Maybe not the mustard greens, actually.

Anyways, there's my novel about my CSA and I'm sticking to it. Good luck with your decision. Hope this has helped. Really, I'm so glad we did this, and I know you will be too, no matter who you choose!

Anyone else getting rushed out of Blind Lady Alehouse?

That's pretty bad, considering you weren't even done yet and it was plain to see. Maybe if you had been sitting there for a while after your table had cleared, but even then... I've been a couple times, and don't remember this kind of treatment, but it's a shame to hear that because I like what they have going.

Finding Farro

At Costco, it's a 3lb bag--totally reasonable. "Organic Earthly Delights." As Dining Diva said, I know Mission Valley carries it. I haven't visited other locations recently :)
