Best Deshebrada In Austin

I like the desebrada at La Moreliana on E. William Cannon.

Taco Trucks in the Montopolis Area

After reading the review in the Chronicle some time back and reading some of Scrumptious Chef's notes I had to try El Taco Rico. I had the enchiladas w/a butterflied fried quail on top and it was delicious. I rarely eat enchiladas and this one was very unique and filled me up just right.
I hadn't been to that area in some time and it reminded me of another gem on Montopolis called "Asada Neuvo Leon". They grill beef and chicken over mesquite and also offer a grilled chile salsa that is served in about a 1 gallon mortar bowl. Talk about the flavors exploding in your mouth. I think they are open Wed-Sun. and it is on the corner of Ponca inside an auto repair and car wash. I would rate both of these places as among my new favorites.

Gas prices effect dining expectations

It makes me feel more fortunate living in SE Austin where my favorite Mexican eateries are close by. Although the idea of going extra miles just to eat takes a little more thoughtful planning.
To Austin John: Can your tell me more about the Blanco Bowling Club? Good biscuits and gravy?

The Rib Eyes at Mesa Ranch

Where will the new location be?

El Meson Closed for Dinner

I recall them opening from 5-8 on fri, sat. though I never went at those times. They tried a Sunday brunch for a while which was very good. I have been there at almost 1:30 on a weekday to see that they closed early.
However since it's close to home I've been going to Mi Ranchito on the corner of WCannon and Pleasant Valley. It's in a convenience store and has homemade tortillas and some excellent carnitas tacos.

stacked enchiladas w green chili

ZTejas makes good green chile enchiladas.

Best "fast" food in Central/South Austin?

PTerry's is my favorite burger in town and always a satisfying experience. I get the dbl. cheeseburger. The staff is friendly and the fries are always hot.

last meal in texas is a lunch

Went to Clay Pit once. Had the lamb vindaloo ordered hot. No flavor and the consistency of old pot roast.

Good restaurants(near UT)

Ming's Cafe on the drag. Cantonese. Top line. Casual. Very affordable.

last meal in texas is a lunch

Habenero

Recommendations for good takeout near Anderson Ln./Burnett

Thanks hounds. We didn't get to have the picnic Sat. but there's always another time. I think this post should give incentive for many picnics as some of my favorite parks are close by.

Best "fast" food in Central/South Austin?

Some of my recent favorites in SE are La Moreliana and Mi Ranchito on WCannon. They both keep long hours and LM is quick. I love their deshrebada(during the week)and carnitas, tamales(weekends only). MR is in the back of a convenience store w/tables. They serve whole meals and everything I've had is very good.
There are 2 more on Bluff Springs Rd. from WC. One is a trailer on a trailer park that is open nights and weekends. The other truck is south on BSR at the convenience store. I still haven't figured out his hours but I had some good tinga chicken(hot)there last week.

Thanks mkwng. I was looking at Sarah's as I haven't had a shawarma in quite a while.

Recommendations for good takeout near Anderson Ln./Burnett

Doing a picnic for my friends bday Saturday and looking for something I may not have thought of in that area. I've considered Alborz(although I'm not familiar w/Persian food)and I'm always up for a good taco truck.

Great brisket that ships

I know Coopers in Llano does. They have a website.

Keeping life in moderation...

Don't skip breakfast. Try a yogurt and banana. I also once heard that meat and cheese sandwhiches are the easiest way to gain weight. I avoid bread unless it's real french bread. Skip appetizers and go for a full entree. Especially if it's lunch time. That's the best time to eat a full meal. Eat slow and don't be afraid to have small portions as you can always have more. I also avoid dairy when I can. Part of my love of food has to do with anticipation and not always giving into my impulses. It keeps the food special for me.

Rosita's Al Pastor - what did I do wrong?

I had a similar experience on my only visit. I ordered the same thing and the meat was very dry, tortillas doughy and beans were like glue. Based on recommendations of some more prominent hounds I didn't want to give a lousy review. Because everybody has a bad day now and then. My first impression was also a large bowl of salsa(which I like)that had very little flavor or heat. I'd like to hear more on this place. Maybe I didn't order the right thing.

Burgers, Burgers, Burgers, and a side of fries

Statesman has a review of burgers in town. A few I'd not heard about.

Burgers, Burgers, Burgers, and a side of fries

The Poodie burger is one of my favorites and it's worth it to get that out of the city feeling.

Carne asada at El Regio?

Yes by all means save yourself from their carne asada. I tried it once at the Stassney location and it was like chewing on old leather. I don't care if it was a one time thing. There are too many other places in town that make great carne asada and Los Comales comes to mind. If you like rustic try it at the taco cart on Montopolis near 183 in that old parking lot Wed-Sun.

I need a roast beef poboy

That's right.

I need a roast beef poboy

I had to satisfy my curiousity today and it was better than I imagined. I like the setting as well. I'll be working that menu in my travels.

Byblos vs. Zorba's

That is my kind of atmosphere.

ChowHound Assignment:Go A Place Never Reviewed On This Board.

I find myself at La Moreliana today hoping they had some carnitas. No luck. So I decided to try the deshrebada tacos. I was expecting it to be just like the barbocoa which is good and I'd never had deshrebada. It was very tender and cooked in a reddish very flavorful sauce that went perfectly well with the thick, creamy green salsa and lime. I've been down w/ a bad case of the bug(not eating all weekend)and this was the first food that I've been able to taste. My senses have awoken.

Anyone know why Central Market is so expensive?

I think it's the convenience that they charge for on non specialty items. Being that they have limited space(hard to believe)they can justify a markup w/o the customer having to go to HEB as well. I enjoy just walking around CM sometimes but even when I go there for a few specialty items I invaraibly have to go to HEB for staples on the same trip. And that's where the Super HEB's came in(I think). I still can't help but wonder who buys all this stuff. And where it goes when it's not bought.

Pho Thaison-Southpark Meadows

Got the bug today and it knocked me on my butt. So I went on a search for some chicken soup. I knew there was a Vietnamese restaurant there and they've just opened. It's right off Slaughter near the Taco Bell And Little Woodrows. I orderd the Pho Ga for just over $7 and it is some of the best chicken soup I've had in a while. Enough for 2. One container is the broth, the next chicken(white and dark)and some veggies. And a bag of bean sprouts, jalapenos, cilantro and hot sauce. The atmosphere looked OK for eat in. New and clean. Close to home I'll be back.

Best Sandwich you ever had?

Italian combo or roast beef and provolone at V & S Deli in Boca Raton. The bread is just right and they slice that RB right onto the bread(good, moist and red)and lately Lulu B's Vietnamese sandwhiches in Austin Tx. A good Rachel at Toojays in SFlorida. They slice the pastrami thin and roll it up on the bread.

Byblos vs. Zorba's

I've been there once and was impressed. They do kabobs right on the grill. I had lamb and it came with 5 sides for under $10. But it is Lebanese food not Greek. I find the flavors to be different but still delicious either way.

Little Chief Smokers?

Assuming you have a grill with a lid on it, I would get a good fire going with charcoal. Try not to use lighter fluid it can bring a bad taste to the meat. Push the hot coals to one side and use either hickory or oak wood chunks. Dry season your ribs to your liking. I like to coat the top with a little dijon mustard and of apple cider vinegar from a spray bottle. Wrap them in some foil with just the bottom opened a little(bone side). Put them on the side of the grill with no coals underneath. Fire should not be too hot. Cover the grill with vent open. If fire is too hot you can wedge something under the lid to let some heat escape. The smoke will build up inside and soon come out of the vents. This is where it starts. Keep your temperature constant and you may have to add more wood every 1/2 hr. or so. Keep smoking for abou 2 hrs. and check under the foil. When the bone starts protruding you can remove the foil. Fire should not be too hot so now you can continue the last hr. of smoking w/o foil. If they appear to be dry on the outside spray with apple cider vinegar. That will keep them moist and the acid from the vinegar helps tenderize and melt connecting tissue. Don't be in a hurry and don't get too distracted(or drunk). I don't like much sauce so I save that for dipping. The sugar from the sauce applied to ribs during heat tends to leave a bitter taste. Have fun and let me know how it goes.

Live Oak Market?

Had the El Cubano today and was impressed. I've not found many good sandwhich places in town and it's close to one of my vendors.
