Ethiopian Food?
Rahel is one of my favorite restaurants in LA. Here's a great write-up by exilekiss:

Recipes that use A LOT of Karo syrup?
Here's my favorite use of Karo: peanut butter rice krispie treats. I can't make these because I will eat way too many.
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups light karo syrup
2 1/2 cups smooth peanut butter (I love Jif for this)
6 cups rice krispies (or less depending on taste), separated
In a large bowl place 5 cups rice krispies, reserve 1 cup separately. Bring sugar and karo syrup to a full boil over high heat. Count to 50 to 55 seconds. Immediately turn off burner and stir in peanut butter. When it is fully combined pour over rice krispies in bowl. Stir in remaining cup rice krispies until the mixture looks right. Spread evenly in a 13 by 9 inch pan. Cool completely before serving.
Hummus--what else besides a dip?
I've never tried it, but I have to admit that I'm really curious about this dessert hummus:

If anyone actually tries it, please report back!
ok, i tried Chego on Overland. Culver City (had only one dish)
But only a better value for that one particular dish, right?

Oh, yum. I love meltaways and haven't had them in ages. I'm definitely storing away this idea for future bake sales. And this one for fall bake sales!

That smittenkitchen one is the recipe I used! It's excellent and obviously very easy.
Bake sale bestsellers
I actually made the dark chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting (I used a peanut butter cream cheese frosting instead) for a friend's birthday a couple of weeks ago and they were a HUGE hit! I love looking through browneyedbakers recipes; makes me wish I had a lot more bake sales to bake for ;).
Bake sale bestsellers
Here's my report back! Everything was a complete hit! I sold out of everything but one of the blondies and a few of the salvadoran breakfast cakes which was fine with me because those were my favorite of the items I baked and I had them as a midnight snack last night. I absolutely love the flavor and texture of them. I ended up using black sesame seeds on the breakfast cakes which I thought made for a very pretty presentation, but like others on this thread have said, people tend to go for the tried and true.
Honestly, I think the item that garnered the most rave reviews were the browned butter rice krispie treats. Multiple people told me that they were the best rice krispie treats they'd ever had. I will definitely be making them for future bake sales since they're cheap, easy, and simple to package. But people really loved all of it. Also, if you're in the market for a dense, chewy, chocolately brownie, the pretzel brownie might be the answer to your prayers. It also held up really well to cutting which was great because I had been concerned that the pretzel crust would be a mess. The blondies also turned out beautifully and were also very easy to slice and package.
I learned from this thread that packaging things in individual packages makes them more appealing. I bought cellophane bags with little twist ties at Target (although I heard yesterday that cheaper ones can be had at Michael's) and sliced and packaged everything, making transport and set up incredibly easy. People kept asking if I was a professional baker since everything looked so put together and I think people bought more because it was easy to carry home rather than trying to eat things out of hand on site.
Thank you all for the very helpful replies! Ipse, I'm definitely up for a trade!

I decided to make these as a sort of savory option this time:

I sampled one out of the oven and they're amazing. We'll see how they sell...
Bake sale bestsellers
If I had enough time to get everything together for the bake sale time of 12:30 today, I would for sure be making them. I know people would love to have a savory option and I'll definitely be making these next time. thanks!
Bake sale bestsellers
How about them?? I'm sure if I had any idea how to make them they'd be bestsellers!
What would YOU do with 40 lbs of hierloom tomatoes?
I did tomato jam using the recipe from here last year and it turned out really well. I actually ended roasting the tomatoes first, though.

Here's what I decided to bring:
-the chocolate brownies with pretzel crumble that HillJ suggested (in the oven now)
-browned butter rice krispie treats
-browned butter blondies with dark chocolate, hazelnuts and cherries
I'll let you all know how it goes tomorrow!
What homemade edible thing do you most commonly gift?
This sounds amazing. If it's more mature ginger, would it be best to peel it?

omg, I have totally been meaning to make these and this is the perfect occasion! thank you for reminding me!
Bake sale bestsellers
Maybe there's another thread somewhere with responses to this query and if so, point me to it. I posted a couple of months ago for ideas for jams to take to a bake sale and got great responses. Now I'm just looking for baked goods more generally. This bake sale is in a community setting, not for a school, so the treats need not be geared towards children. In fact, it might be better if they aren't. I'd love to hear what you've made for bake sales that's been a hit with the crowds! Thanks!
Cold Lentil Salad Ideas
I make one with beluga lentils, chopped dill, and tiny cubes of cheese (I use cave-aged Marisa http://www.cowgirlcreamery.com/prodinfo.asp?number=CAVMAR but you could use any hard, salty cheese) tossed with a light vinaigrette.
What are you baking these days? August 2011, part 1 [old]
I made these blondies last night that were the runner up in food 52's gluten-free baked goods contest. I get together with some girlfriends every sunday night and I've agreed to bring baked goods to feed them. Many of the girls are gluten-free, so I've been looking for recipes that satisfy gluten-eaters too. I usually make ono mochi butter cake because people request it every single week but I decided to switch it up this week. I'm happy to report that these were a huge hit! They really were some of the best blondies I've ever tasted. The modifications I made were as follows: I browned the butter as suggested in the recipe, I substituted a tsp of almond emulsion and a tsp of orange emulsion for the 2 Tblsps of vanilla, I sprinkled the top with a dusting of smoked salt before I popped them in the oven (I've found this works really well with other browned butter baked goods I've made) and I only cooked for 30 minutes. People raved and I'll definitely be making them again.
*Your* secret to great apple pie?
wow! interesting. I used star anise in a batch of spiced cranberry jam I made last thanksgiving but I mustn't have used it judiciously because I found it totally overpowering.
New brownie idea?!
mmm...I thought it looked amazing! Glad to hear it turned out well!
Poster Mollyomormon reports Axe Reopens - Finally!
Hahahaha, of course I'l post what we ate! I wish I would have taken a picture of the back patio so you could see how beautiful it is. We each had the composed bowl which allows you to chose a grain (brown rice or quinoa), three vegetable sides from a menu of 7 or 8 choices, and a dressing. One can add a protein (tofu, hard cooked egg, chicken or salmon) for an extra charge. I had the bowl with quinoa, braised greens, lentils with cumin and sauerkraut with a lime-based dressing and a hard-cooked egg as my protein. I wish that I could hard-cook eggs with yolks that turn out so bright and creamy, but alas, none of the tricks I've tried have worked. All of the veggies were beautifully cooked with bright, fresh flavors. The composed bowls are served in gorgeous (yes, everything at Axe is gorgeous) Heath stoneware and the wait staff, in addition to being beautiful, was also incredibly nice. It's hard not to feel glamorous enjoying a Friday lunch in such a setting. I'd love to hear what others think.
New brownie idea?!
Like these? http://www.browneyedbaker.com/2011/07/21/chocolate-chip-cookie-dough-brownies/
Very "LA" restaurants with outdoor seating to take visitors?
I ate lunch at the re-opened Axe on Friday which now has a gorgeous back patio space full of gorgeous people being waited on by the gorgeous staff . I even commented to my girlfriend while we were eating, only in LA....
Where is a good resturant with the best bread pudding (preferably with liquor!)
but they only serve beer and wine, right? sorry, I guess that I'm unclear from the OP whether she wants a bread pudding that includes liquor or a restaurant that serves excellent bread pudding that also has a liquor license.
Making Vanilla Curd
speaking of non-citrus curds, don't these rhubarb curd shortbread look amazing?
http://www.food52.com/recipes/4338_rhubarb_curd_shortbread
i've never made them, but this thread reminded me of them and I will likely give them a try soon.
but they do use lemon juice and imagine that the acid is probably a definitive feature of curd, as mentioned above.
Where's someplace great for dessert that's not a usual suspect?
I think the desserts at A-Frame are amazing and not a place usually people mention when they're talking dessert.

Still mourn that they stopped carrying Snackmaster's turkey jerky, which I can buy elsewhere but it's twice as expensive. The chocolate-covered chili-spiced dried mangos, the pre-cooked beluga lentils, the whole grain chocolate chip cookies, and recently the three-pepper salsa.
College BFFs back together 1 night only- MAKE IT COUNT!
I agreed with the Animal rec. Last week, I ate at Animal and Son of a Gun back-to-back (it was a good week!!) and while our meal at Son of a Gun was excellent, Animal is still my favorite restaurant. Two of us shared 4 plates and 2 desserts (the sticky toffee pudding is amazing) and our bill came to around $80 before tip so it should be easily within your budget.
