vegas happy hour hot spots
Try Canaletto's in the Venetian. Very good pizza's, appetizers, and wine for $7. Domestic beers for $3. It's on the 2nd floor in 'St. Marks Square'. Interesting people watching too.
Here is my trip advisor post:

Seeking very spicy food!
Try Yun Nan Garden for REALLLLLLLY Spicy Yunnan food. It helps if you speak Mandarin Chinese too, as most of the diners are/do. Do NOT ask for real spicy unless you mean it. The 1st dinner my wife and I had there was way too spicy for me. The next time we ask for 'small' spicy and it was still pretty hot. Try an appetizer plate. Go to the steam table in the back and choose a trio of spicy meats and veggies (and other stuff, ... like seaweed) for 6 bucks or so. Since you off the strip prices are reasonable.
WARNING: Not for the NON-adventurous.

Try Cathay House on Spring Mountain Rd. Here is my post in trip advisor.

Pho 777 Disappointing Visit
My wife and I were in the mood for pho today. We went to Argyle St and visited Pho 777, one of our usual places for pho. We were extremely disappointed in the the taste (lack of seasoning, cinnamon, star anise, ...etc.) and quantity of meat. We were used to a bowl with ample amounts of meats to noodles. This trip it was very 'portion controlled'. I realize times are tough, ... go ahead and charge me another dollar if you need to, but don't skimp on quality and quantity. It's unfortunate that when you fine some place where you enjoy the food, they go ahead and change it for some reason.
Just wanted to pass this along. Also would like other peoples opinions on where they may have had better.
Thanks.
Best Chow Fun in Chinatown
Try Lee Wing Wah in the Chinatown Plaza. It has a credible Beef (dry, no gravy) Chow Fun. There regular chow fun with a gravy is good too. Solid Cantonese food can be had here.
Sun Wah
Yeah that's kinda pricey. It was much less in Beijing! Hey if it was good then it's worth the try.
Enjoy the leftovers.
Korean Tofu Soup (soon dubu) in Chicago?
I can't attest to it being the best, as it's my only sample, but we went to Sokongdong with a group of friends. We had the 'specialty' of the house, or at least that is what the owners daughter told us. It was tofu and seafood. Tasty. The women had an herbal tofu soup. Looked good too. One of our party had bbq short ribs ... they were tasty too.
The usual 'side dishes' you get at Korean eateries were not bad either. All in all. it was and interesting outing. Not much for ambiance, but the place was filled with Koreans drinking bai jou (sp?) and enjoying their tofu dishes.

Breakstone's cottage cheese
I haven't been looking, but I used to find it everywhere. Jewel, Domincks, local grocery stores, ....etc. ? Has it disappeared? curious, I will be looking next trip to the store.
Sun Wah
IMO you will have about 1/2 a duck left. However, I believe they will slice up the entire duck for you... so the actual amount of meat will not be 'over the top' too much. See if they are going to make soup with the bones. Your left overs should be ok for a day or tow in your frig. You can heat it up in the oven (don't over cook it) and put it over rice or on top of some chinese noodle soup. If you are into cooking, you could use the duck pieces in a Thai duck curry. ... enjoy
Deep dish pizza for one? And a couple other questions
Uno's or Due's have THE original deep dish pizza and they have it in individual size (at least for lunch that I know of).
Try out chinatown too. Right off the red line el.
Lincoln Park is also a nice place to walk around. Get off on Fullerton Ave el stop and walk to Clark St. Go north and you should find some interesting places.
Can't comment on #3.
Hope this helps, have a good time.
making gravlax
Not sure if they have it in the winter, but I have seen big bunches of dill at Jerry's in Niles, Milwaukee and Oakton. Give them a call.
Din tai fung in taipei
Thanks, very helpful. Is the 2nd one near Zhong Shan North Rd?
Din tai fung in taipei
JFL, where in Taipei is Jing Ding? Street name and MRT stop would be helpful. Thanks.
Also I agree that Joe's in Flushing serves an excellent xlb.
By the way, Taipei DTF is good, but not even close to Jia Jia Tang Bao in Shanghai.
Chicago Dim Sum
Here is my orignal reply again:
Phoenix has the nicest ambiance (table clothes, ...etc.). 3 Happiness dim sum is "old school" dim sum and still very tastey. Shui Wah is smaller and kinda of in between the two in ambiance and taste. No carts at Shui Wah either. Another alternative is Happy Chef, right next door to Shui Wah. We usually go to 3 Happiness (the kids like it better ... it's what they grew up on)
Things change quickly, especially in Chinatown. We have 're-stumbled' onto Furama, on the south end of Chinatown, Wentworth around 28th st. The dim sum chefs there have been doing a very good job lately. They also have a 'sale' going on during the weekdays. They have cart service, so it's a nice show too. We've been going here lately. I think they serve dim sum until around 3pm. We still go to 3 Happiness when the kids come into town.
crawfish?
Try Pappadeaux in Oak Brook. I think they have fried crawfish on the menu. ... at least last time I was there. Happy birthday to your son.
Soft shelled crabs in Chicago
If you can get out to the suburbs, try Aki Hana in Wilmette. They have a soft shell crab app. that is great. Good sushi and Japanese dishes too.

Cheap ethnic eats, off the strip
Been there. I didn't think it was a good use of my time. I would rather go to DiHo or Ranch, both Asian markets on Spring Mountain Rd. DiHo is further west, Ranch 99 (I think is the full name) is in Chinatown Mall. They have large (over 4 pound) lobsters for relatively cheap.
Easy lunch in Chicago from O'Hare to South Bend
If you want to do dim sum, you can go to Furama on Wentworth and about 30th street. It's on the far south end of Chinatown (sort of). You take the Kennedy past downtown and onto the Dan Ryan. You get off on 31st street (I think that's correct), in any case if you pass whatever they call the old Comiskey Park (Sox park) you went too far. After you get off, you will see Furama just to the right of the off ramp, but you can't get directly there, because it's a one way. Take a right at the light and then another right at the next block (residential neighborhood) for about 3 or 4 blocks, make another right to Wentworth and down to Furama's parking lot (it's in a strip mall, parking lot is at the south end of the mall).
Good dim sum and will be busy by the time you get there.
Easy access to the Dan Ryan expressway from Furama to help you get back on the road to SB.
Enjoy.
Best deep dish if only one to choose?
Uno's or Due's . Sausage and mushrooms .... pardon my druel
Chicago Dim Sum
If you want a real value, you should try the bakery about 1/2 block east on Argyle (south side of the street, a few doors before the L tracks). You can order a pot of tea or cup of coffee and sui mai, har gow, chicken feet, taro cake, shrimp cheung fun and a bunch of other items. Ask for the short menu, it's in English. Some of the bakery goods are real good too. It's lot cheaper than the restaurants, but the ambiance is quite sparse.
Chicago Dim Sum
Up north on Broadway or the one south of Chinatown on Wentworth? Haven't been back to Broadway one for a while,.
Chicago Dim Sum
I would say that all that I had posted last year is still true. My kids came into town this last weekend and we went to (the big, upstairs) 3 Happiness and it was as good as usual. Get there before 11:30am and you should beat the crowds on the weekend, unless there is something special going on in Chinatown (like New Years or Double 10). It's a short block from the L station.
Something new recently is Furama. Way down south on Wentworth (almost to 31st St.). Somewhat out of the way and not near the L (unless you count the Sox park stop, which i would NOT recommend, too far from restaurant). You would need a car. As always, you have to sometimes try one of the places that you may not have eaten at recently because the chefs change. Furama has been very good recently. Just an example. so you might try another one of the Chinatown Square places just to see.
Hope this helps. .... Be sure to get the Phoenix claws (chicken feet).
Good Crab in Las Vegas?
Yes you can find live dungeness crab at some Chinese rest. Try the big Seafood/dim sum rest. on Spring Mountain Rd in the far corner of the Chinatown Shopping Center. About 1 mile west of the strip. Turn west at Treasure Island from the strip. I forgot the name ... something like Sea Harbor I think.
If you have cooking facilities, you can buy live lobster and crab in the supermarket in the same shopping center. We rented a condo once and got a 6 pounder for under 10 bucks a pound.
It was DELICIOUS
So . . . what is the H Mart up to these days?
IMO (and my wifes) the tofu that is made fresh is excellent. So is the soy bean milk. The fish is typically very fresh (look at the eyes and gills as well as sniff testing)., The selection is pretty good. The pickled stuff is interesting (I'm not Korean). I love going on the weekends and tasting the various items. The sashimi is ok. Most of the time just tuna, salmon, and fluke fresh. Once in a while I have found yellowtail. Their meats are a good value. We get some of their ribeye steaks and slice meats for hotpots.
They are known for their cheap veggies. People from Chinatown come up to the Niles store to shop in bulk. The Korean specialties are usually fair to high priced. Supply and demand I guess.
It's worth a visit, especially on a Saturday. Go have lunch at their food court (small),.
Hope this helps
Authentc northern Italian pizza on the Gold Coast?
A bit out of territory, but try Pat's in Lincoln Park on Lincoln Ave just north of Fullerton.
dim sum before 3pm Sunday bear game
gordeaux, I think WE are older ... :-) ... and for the record ... I'm a north sider ... or was before moving to the burbs
Best Indian Buffet?
Indian Grill on Clark St, south of Fullerton, if you are willing to go into the city.
They usually have samosas which are very good. My wife does not usually like samosas, but she loves these. They have the usual faves, tandoori chicken, some lamb dish, chicken of course, lentils, veggies, spinach...etc You get the picture. What makes this place good is that the sauces actually taste different from each other. Some places, each dish kinda tastes like it's the same spice mixtures. Buffet is for weekend lunches only I think.
Another good place is Himalaya, in Niles. It's an Indian/Nepali restaurant. What makes this place special is the Nepali lamb (mutton?) dish. Very tasty. Buffet for lunch daily.

Razor clams
I've seen them frozen at H-mart in Niles. I have not seen any fresh though.
