SF Valley/West Hills

Dan's Super Subs, The Local Peasant (Woodland Hills), Carillo's Mexican Deli (Canoga Park), Little Brothers Sushi (Woodland Hills), Boulevard Burgers (Woodland Hills) Unfortunately not too much else I'm aware of in the vicinity though I'm sure there are a couple others out there.

Best everything in Sherman Oaks?

Well, not sure about best but here are some decent spots:

Boneyard Bistro for decent BBQ and a great beer list. I believe they also do a fried chicken night.

Mistral for higher end dining.

House of Taka and Nomura both have respectable sushi.

Barone's probably has the best pizza (Valley Glen)

Tacos San Marzano for tacos

Bills burgers for a good, old-school burger served up by a saucy, cool old timer. M-F only.

I prefer Carnival of all of the lebanese/middle eastern places in the area.

People seem to like Bamboo Forrest for Chinese.

A Studio City/Sherman Oaks thread has recently been revived and you'll find a lot of other recs there.

Good luck.

Looking For A New Fun Restaurant With Great Food in the Valley

Was there for lunch today. Had the Octopus Salad, which I thought was good albeit a little overdressed and salty, as well as the Orechiette which was kind of like a deconstructed arrabiatta. Pretty good though could have been a little more al dente. All in all, kind of the same ho-hum Italian you find elsewhere in the valley.

Not in the North Valley but Larsen's in Encino may do the trick.

Best Mediterranean/Middle East in the Valley (Encino, Tarzana, Sherman Oaks)

The answer to your question is Carnival in Sherman Oaks. Excellent Lebanese.

What to order at Scarpetta?

I've had most of the pastas which are all good to very good, but I had the most unbelievable veal chop a few months back. It might have been the best steak, chop etc I've ever had. Big, tender, perfectly seasoned and cooked. I wouldn't normally order something like this in a restaurant of this type, but I brought a very nice, BIG, red so I jumped in. I was actually kind of shocked how good the chop was. My mouth waters thinking about it.

Great Lunch Spot in Los Angeles

Well, you have a few choices although I wouldn't say any of them are fantastic. Cecconi's is a good suggestion. Other ideas: Taste, Comme Ca, The Palm (decent steak, great martini's, big bill). Expanding your area to Beverly Hills will yield a few more options.

Mistral

I haven't had anything bad there and the specials are always very good. Last time I was there I had a special grilled calamari salad. It was fantastic. Be prepared though - this is not light food.

Great croissant in Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Noho, etc?

Is it just me or does it seem strange that a bakery named Shalom Bakery bakes and sells a ham and cheese croissant?

Drinks and bar food east SFV

I have heard good reports on The Local Peasant where Cozy's used to be on Ventura just east of Hazeltine across from Ralph's.

My dad eats only hamburgers. I eat everything. He’s paying. Where to go?

What about Comme Ca? Good burger and a fair amount of other nice things for you to choose from.

MISTRAL SHERMAN OAKS......

My wife and I just went there for her 40th birthday (to have a nice dinner for 2 after the group blowout) and it was really, really good, albeit pricey. As Carter said, perfect for a special occasion. My wife doesn't east meat on the bone or dark meat and they were happy to substitute 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts for the Chicken Mistral. She loved it. I had a special of Veal Tenderloin, in that same lemon caper sauce, and it was unbelievable. We have lived in Sherman Oaks for 12 years and we couldn't believe we had never been.
Oh, I also had a special grilled calamari salad that was fantastic as well. This is not bashful food though. All of our dishes were rich and heavily seasoned.

Tried walking in to Les Deux Salons as a single just a couple of minutes past 6 and they couldn't get me in, even at the bar. Menu looked great. Oh well. Next time. Appreciate the rec.

Wolfgang's Steakhouse (Beverly Hills): A Classic American Steakhouse [Review] w/ Pics

Went here last night with a group. Based on the reviews here, I went in wanting a burger but we ended up eating family style with a few porterhouse's and sides. Although the steaks were cooked absolutely perfectly medium-rare and were very tender (especially the filet) there was no beefiness or nice char to be had. Just a tender steak with little flavor. For those prices, I can cook a better steak at home on my weber! The sides were fine. Nothing to rave or complain about. I won't be back here on my own dime but if someone else is buying it's a burger all the way for me.

Need suggestion Studio City / Sherman Oaks for romantic dinner

I don't disagree on price at Mistral but every meal I have had at Ca Del Sole has been completely ordinary. Not bad, just kinda fine. The patio is lovely, however. For "Valley Italian" I prefer La Pergola or La Loggia as mentioned earlier.
All of this said, the patio on a nice night at Ca Del Sole might be just what they are looking for.

Natas Malasadas

It's those crunchy nibs that do it for me. I always eat those first! I think it's about time for Mom to whip up a batch!

Natas Malasadas

While I can appreciate Natas in general for bringing Portuguese pastries etc to the valley, her Malasadas are not the traditional hawaiian ones I grew up with and that my mom makes. Hers are uniformly round shaped and I am used to the odd shaped one's with crunchy little nibs, a light, eggy interior and a nice coating of sugar.

What about Mistral in Sherman Oaks? It's French, The food is significantly better than Pinot or Ca Del Sole and it is romantic. The only question is price point which would be close depending on what you order.

Al Wazir equivalent in the SF Valley?

Al Wazir was my lunch spot for years so I know what you mean. Carnival, as mentioned, is very good and so is Pita Hut just south of Ventura on Van Nuys blvd. More similar in terms of restaurant style is Amir's Falafel on Ventura Blvd and Colfax in Studio City.
I would be surprised if one of these did not satisfy your craving.

Nothing really blows me away there - all pretty standard steakhouse fare. More of an after work scene than anything else.

Boa question

I work right across the street and have many a lunch and dinner there. Outside is great if the weather is nice but it can also be quite noisy. The seating is not as comfortable out there IMHO. Inside is nice as well for a quieter, cozier vibe. Really depends on what you are looking for.

What's the consensus on Joe Peep's?

Absolutely agree.
Note that you can also buy the raw dough, and sauce if you like, and take it home and make a really great pizza with whatever you desire (I like arugula and prosciutto after baking the pie). I recommend leaving the dough at room temp for about an hour prior to rolling it. Bake at 475 - 500 on a pizza stone or pizza pan for about 10-12 mins. You won't be disappointed.

Moving to the Valley, what's good?- Sherman Oaks/Van Nuys

Nothing has changed. It's still the same husband (look at this corned beef!) and wife running the place!

Moving to the Valley, what's good?- Sherman Oaks/Van Nuys

I'm in your 'hood. A few more for you:
Tony's Mexican Grill - Magnolia and Coldwater. Good grilled Seafood and the usual fare. Delivery as well.
Santino's Pizza - Woodman near Ventura. NY Style (get the square), small and family run.
QT's Chicago Dogs - Woodman and Moorpark, same center as Carnival. Dogs and Gyro's
Bars are spotty but find your crowd. Robin's Hood as previously mentioned, Ireland's 32 (woodman and burbank) for music and pub grub, Chimney Sweep (same center as QT and Carnival) for a true dive bar and the Fox Fire Room at Magnolia and Whitsett.
Marv's Deli - Magnolia and Whitsett, makes a far better corned beef or pastrami sandwich than Jerry's, Solley's etc and less of a schlep to Brent's.
Pita Kitchen - Van Nuys just South of Ventura, parking sucks but food is good.
And Firehouse Cafe, Victory and Reseda, for killer Gyro's
Happy eating and drinking
