Mimico, New Toronto & Long Branch restaurants - revised thread!

An unfortunate coincidence to change signs to market a new eatery during a film shoot that decorates the exterior of the building, but, yes, Smokin'Kings BBQ *is* real!

Dined at Tich last night. Two people sampling four vegetarian dishes, plus 5 different accompanying libations :) Some of the best Indian food I've enjoyed in Toronto, and I have sampled many :) including with friends from India. Lovely ambiance, good value, fine service. More details after my next visit next weekend!

The new exterior sign is only for a film shoot (which is why it looks like the "real deal"). The sign for strip club on the side entrance was also covered during the days of the shoot, whereas the corner sign was transformed. The television show "Rogue" has been filming in Toronto of late -- I wonder if that's where we'll see the unfortunately only temporary transformation of Jay Jays.

That's the one, they offer only 2 dumpling dishes. They're more about the "melody" part of their name - music-themed decorations. We were the same: dropped in hoping for dumplings, & left without ordering, but I took the take-out & delivery menu, and was later pleased with the quality of the delivery veggie dishes I sampled; despite no dumplings, a happy Chinese food find. :) I'll be interested to hear opinions on their more carnivorous offerings.

Melody Chinese: I ordered delivery 2 weeks ago -- even though they advertise their delivery area only to 7th Street, there were no questions asked about my location near 1st Street. And they arrived *earlier* than advised.

I'm vegetarian, and ordered 4 (of maybe 6 or 8?) veggie items: all were super fresh, and cooked just right. Fed me deliciously for a 3-day weekend.

The resto itself is really cute for eat-in, which is on my list to try next.

Surprised to hear that. I've eaten there with friends at least a dozen times since they opened, and none of us has ever been dissatisfied with a meal. Most recently, just over a week ago, 2 of us had the tacos - they were deelish corn tortillas, not flour, and we were all surprised at how filling the 3 tacos were. I had vegetarian, my mate had chicken. The only complaint we've ever had was the unannounced substitution of pinto for advertised black beans - a significant difference that should have been mentioned at ordering. I wonder if that was your case tonight, an unmentioned sub of flour tortillas?

Where does one go to / order in for the best Chinese in this 'hood?
I haven't explored Chinese much during my 12 years here, but would like to have a go-to when the craving hits.
Bonus points for extra vegetarian-friendly.

My neighbourhood faves for other cuisines are Cellar Door, Goodlake, Huevos Gourmet, Bombay on the Lake, Lavinia, Maurya, and Sushi 2 Go (Quensway only).

Hey, Lavinia Restaurant just called me - they're opening tomorrow, Saturday 24 November. They're then open every night for dinner, except closed Mondays. (There may be a weekend brunch, too, tbd).

Just stopped in & spoke with the lovely friendly folks at Lavinia. They hope to open by Saturday 01 December - still awaiting their liquor license. The space has been refreshed, and is warm & welcoming, maintaining sophistication. Looking forward to sampling to the menu, which is posted in photos, below!:

Monday dinner: Kensington Market, or College / Spadina / Bathurst / Harbord

Had a reservation at Torito's, but they've just called to advise that they will not be open on Mondays until next week.

Looking for a nice sit-down resto, medium-price, conversation-friendly (and vegetarian-friendly). And recommended for food, of course!

Closed Mondays: Bellevue Cafe, Woodlot...

Open Mondays, & under consideration:
Rancho Relaxo (I like the Mexican there),
Bar Italia (if in a more sophisticated mood),
Messis (a little pricier, but always satisfies),
Supermarket (food can be uneven, but a friend is performing there later that evening),
(The Midtown - haven't been there in a while - branded more as a music venue now?)...
I miss Musa on Dundas / Bathurst!

Which venues am I forgetting? New ones Ive not yet discovered?

Your suggestions?

Thanks!

Dundas & University in Toronto - best lunch meeting spot?

Based on your suggestions, and my own resultant research (including discovering that Midi was booked solid with Winterlicious), I took my meeting group to the Queen & Beaver, which was perfect! Thank you for the recommendation. The front room has only slightly less ambience, but is ideal for conversation, as it contains only about 5 tables, and is separated from the more volume-y larger room, bar, & music. The service was great, and the food was fab - delish! And reasonably priced, to my preferences, anyway. Good wine selection too, in addition to upscale pub beers & ciders. I will definitely return. Thanks again for your help!

Dundas & University in Toronto - best lunch meeting spot?

Any suggestions for a lunch resto with good moderately priced food, and an ambience amenable to a professional discussion, within a couple of blocks of Dundas Street & Unviersity Avenue in Toronto? Thanks for any recommendations!
