Countertop/Mini oven recommendation please

Hi friends,

Thank you for your replies, I appreciate them.

I am slightly confused between the Roast and Bake function when cooking vegetables and potatoes.

Many recipes just state to heat the Oven to a certain temperature and cook for a certain time.

Any suggestions on when to use Bake and when to use Roast?

Thanks!

Countertop/Mini oven recommendation please

Hi friends,

I hope everyone is doing well. I purchased the Breville Compact Smart oven BOX650XL and it is waiting to be opened from the box!

Me and my partner would like to use to 'cook' mostly vegetables and at times, Chicken.

We will also use it to toast breads every so often.

Can anyone suggest some recipes/links to recipes for vegetable based dishes.

We are also amateurs on simple recipes to roast vegetables, e.g. roasted asparagus, mushroom etc.

Any tips and suggestions are welcome!!

Thanks,

Sodastream carbonaton adaptor - anyone use it?

Hi friends,

I hope everyone is doing well. I have a question about my Sodastream.

I have a Sodastream Source, which I primarily use to make carbonated water, without any flavorings. It uses the 60L carbonator bottle.

I am wondering if anyone has any experience in using the after market adapters which allow the Sodastream carbonator bottle to be refilled (as opposed to exchanged for a new cannister)?

I am running through my carbonators quite often, and looking for a cheaper alternative if any.

Also, while I have your attention...I right now have two carbonating bottles. I want to use these to carbonate the water and then transfer it to another bottle which will hold the carbonation well, so that I can keep some chilled carbonated water in the fridge.

Any suggestions on what type of bottle I should use?

I appreciate your help as always

Thanks!

In home water filtration system (small household) recommendation?

Hi friends,

I hope you are doing well. I am looking for a water filtration system to use at home (prefer under the sink, easy to install, as we live in a rental apartment) unless a portable filter e.g. Brita is better performance/value.

There are two of us in the residence, and we currently are buying the 3 gallon 'Ozarka' water from Costco, but it is getting tedious to keep restocking and expensive as well.

We prefer the taste of 'Spring' water as compared to tap water here in Houston, maybe its just psychological.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks!

Countertop/Mini oven recommendation please

Hi friends,

Thank you for you replies. It seems like the Breville is the way to go?

I do not have a Bed Bath and Beyond $20 coupon :( and there seems to be some question about whether it will be accepted.

Are there any other in store or online vendors that sell these at competitive prices/discounts.

Of course I will look at sites such as Amazon but sometimes there may be specialty retailers which may be more competitive?

On a separate note, any good recipe/cook book for cooking using such an oven?

Thank you!

Countertop/Mini oven recommendation please

Hi friends,

I hope everyone is doing well. I am slowly moving to cooking more at home, as I am drifting towards family life (after being a bachelor for long) and need to equip my kitchen a bit at a time.

I use my full size Oven on occasion but just for simple recipes, like roaster vegetables or baked potatoes (yes, I am an amateur). I am told that using the large oven consumes a lot of electricity and I believe I observed that in my recent bill!

Thus, I am looking for suggestions for a good countertop oven/mini oven that can fit my needs. I plan to use it to cook vegetables, toast bred (not bake bread) and associated recipes. It will rarely be used to cook meat.

There are two of us in the household.

I look forward to and appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks,

Vegetarian in Austin - quick updates to previous recommendations/new options

Hi friends,

I hope everyone is doing well. Myself and a friend are visiting Austin for the first time. We are looking for a quick rundown on some of the most delicious dining options that are either vegetarian or have a fair selection of options for vegetarians (not Vegans, thus cheese, dairy are ok).

I have read through the board and identified some options, e.g Mothers, Mr. Natural, Trudy's, Ruby's BBQ, but just wanted to see if there are any additions, or alternates that we should pick.

We are staying near the convention center and have a car. We are ok with mid to fancy but not exorbitant dining. For us the quality of food and service (does not have to be fancy, but just attentive and polite) is what is most important.

We want to try:
1) Thai
2) BBQ
3) Tex-Mex
4) Pizza

We are coming from Houston and eat Indian food often as well as salads so wish to avoid those.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Suggestions for a small Fondue pot?

Hi friends,

I hope everyone is doing well in the New Year. I am interested in buying a small Fondue set - Pot, forks, flame burner for occasional use at home.

I am quite an amateur cook in the Kitchen, so something that is of good quality and simple to use, will be very helpful.

I look forward to your suggestions.

Thanks!

Bread maker recommendations for newbies

Hi friends,

Happy Holidays to all! I hope everyone is doing well. We are a couple that is spending more time in our kitchen and looking to expand our cookware and cooking skills.

One of the items we want to gift ourselves for the holidays is a bread machine. We are novices at using a bread machine, so are looking for something good, yet not overcomplicated.

We see ourselves using it a couple of times a week if not less, and baking some breads to use in sandwiches or supplement our meals.

We can order it online or buy it in store.

Any suggestions please?

Happy Holidays!

Where to for dinner next?

Hi friends,

Great thread! I live in NW Houston and wanted to try some of these eateries.

I will be going with a friend who is vegetarian (dairy is ok, all vegetables ok, no fish, egg, poultry, meat).

We want to try several different cuisines, usually Chinese/Thai/Vietnamese eateries have plenty of vegetarian choices.

Which other options from the list above or not in the list would you recommend?

All dining styles are ok, e.g. take out to nice dining.

Thanks!

Deciding between the Angel Juicer and Norwalk?

Hi friends,

My girlfriend is keen to get a juicer for home use. She wants to use it for fruit, but also for vegetables that she finds hard to chew e.g. cabbage and some greens.

She is looking for something that will last for a long term and is easy to use, maintain and has good service.

She is located in the USA.

I have done research on this board, and it seems that the 'better' models are either the Angel Juicer or the Norwalk.

I understand that there are also options from Omega and Champion, but in my limited knowledge of juicers, it seems that the Angel or Norwalk models have something more to offer...apart from being more expensive of course.

Which juicer do you recommend for us?

Thank you!

Madrid recommendations requested - with vegetarian options

Hi friends,

I am visiting Madrid for the first time. I am accompanied by my partner who is also here for the first time and in Spanish speaking.

We are staying in the Plaza Santa Ana area. We are looking for suggestions for restaurants that have a decent quality and variety of vegetarian options in the menu. Eggs and cheese are fine and all vegetables, bread too.

We have tried restaurant artemesia which is good but looking for other options too.

Also any suggestions for a great restaurant that serves Tapas with some vegetarian options and also the same for Paella.

Finally, on a separate note, which is truly the best chocolatier? We tired cafe valor and it was below expectations, not bad just not great.

Thanks!

Family dining options near Cicero/Oak Park - suggestions wanted

Hello,

We are a family of 11, i.e. 8 adult, 3 children. We live in the Cicero/Oak Park neighborhood.

We are looking for a family dining option for dinner on a Sunday evening, around 6pm.

We eat all cuisines, and meats, vegetables, but as there are kids, we are not looking for something very exotic.

Greektown comes to mind as a possibility, however, we are open to most areas within a 20 minute drive.

We are looking for great food, good service and an atmosphere that is open to kids, i.e. not jacket and tie sit down.

In terms of budget, anything along the lines of $30-$50 per person is fine, we can go slightly up or down.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
Thanks,

Two days in London - Dining suggestions (Chinese, Vegetarian, other must try's)

Hi guys,

I will gladly share our menu, but please keep in mind, the diners have a limited palate, so we must have ordered a very boring menu.

Vegetarian Spring Rolls - Rating 2.5 on 5
Crispy Seaweed - Rating 4 on 5..very good
Sweet Corn Crabmeat Soup - Rating 4 on 5...very good
Sweet Corn Chicken Soup - Rating 4 on 5 - very good
1 Coke
1 Diet Coke
Chinese Greens with Garlic (Entree) - 4 on 5 - very good
Vegetable Fried Rice - 4.5 on 5 - flavorful, light, very good
Tofu with mixed vegetables - 3.5 on 5 - I did not try it but hear the Tofu was not that great
Mushrooms with Crabmeat - 4 on 5 - almost very good, I did not try it but it was good, no complaints

Total bill 60 pounds. No alcohol.

There was a wait of about 20 mins when we went there, and it is a tight squeeze. However, the service was great, no errors in the order, efficient. I would definitely go back again.

Thanks!

Two days in London - Dining suggestions (Chinese, Vegetarian, other must try's)

Thanks for all the recommendations. We went to Mr. Kong on Lisle Street, Chinatown. It was crowded, and reasonable value for money.

I would try it again, as our group had limited dietary preferences, so we could not order many of the dishes.

Service was efficient.

Two days in London - Dining suggestions (Chinese, Vegetarian, other must try's)

Hi friends,

My family is visiting London for the weekend and staying near the Lancaster Gate tube station in Bayswater Road.

They are looking for a good Chinese restaurant, preferably one with some vegetarian options, and not over the top in term of price, but not a take away either. Something mid/upper mid range.

Also, looking for a great Japanese restaurant, and any other MUST TRY's (ANY CUISINE) as long as their are Vegetarian options available.

We don't mind if the suggestions are a short/medium taxi ride away.

Looking forward to your suggestions,

Thanks,

Gift suggestions needed

Hello friends,

I am traveling to parts of Asia later this week, and would like to buy some fine spirits and wines to gift family members and business associates.

I can either buy them here in HOUSTON and check them in my luggage, or buy them in the Duty free shop at the airport in DUBAI.

I do not drink by choice, so please pardon my ignorance

I am looking for some wonderful, UNIQUE:

1) Wine

2) Champagne (I think this is a Wine)

3) Scotch Whisky

4) Any other unique liquor that is appropriate as a gift

I can spend up to $150-200 A BOTTLE....for something really special otherwise something less than $100 is good.

I appreciate your comments.

Thanks so much,

Coffee machine recommendation? - for use outside USA

Hi,

Thanksgiving Champagne recommendation

Hi friends,

Wishing all of you and your families and friends a Happy Thanksgiving! I have been invited to celebrate Thanksgiving with my friend and his family in Houston, TX

As a gesture of gratitude, I asked them what gift I could get for them, and they very politely suggested Champagne.

As I do not consume alcohol, I was wondering if you could please provide me with a nice Champagne that I should take for them?

The only name I have ever heard of is Dom Perignon, but again, I don't know much about this subject!

I appreciate your help.

Happy Thanksgiving,

First time Hong Kong visitors....last minute trip..looking to try a few different cuisines

Hi friends,

First of all my apologies, I have searched, but am time constrained to comb through all the replies on here to find what I am looking for. Please pardon me.

My parents (mid 50s) and Sister (mid 30s) are visiting Hong Kong (staying at the EXCELSIOR Hotel near Victoria Park (Gloucester Road) for 4 days this week.

Two of them are vegetarian (the ladies) and my Father eats most meats, but nothing exotic e.g Rabbit, Reptiles, etc.

I am looking for suggestions for them to enjoy a few different cuisines while in Hong Kong. Most of these meals would be at dinner, but they need to eat lunch as well!

**We are flexible on Budget**

Can you please suggest some restaurants serving the following cuisines:

1) Italian - Pizza, Pastas, desert
2) Chinese - Nothing exotic like Frogs etc. just rice, noodles, veggies, chicken, maybe some delicious seafood.
3) Japanese - must have some vegetarian options
4) South East Asian - e.g. Indonesian, Singaporean
5) Continental - European cuisine?
6) Middle Eastern/Lebanese?
7) Sandwiches/Salads
8) Desert

Any other MUST TRYs....

Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it

Hi lambowner, thanks so much for the replies. I will make sure to check these out. I have looked at b4-u.eat.com but not spent much time on it, maybe I need to.

Run out of options in the NW....need some recs!

Hi friends,

So I am visiting Houston on work, staying near Willowbrook Mall in the NW and have been here for 2 months!!! Woo hoo.

I had posted upon arriving here and got some fabulous recommendations, But now I am repeating them way too often and need some more suggestions. I am WILLING to drive further. Some places I have tried include

Lupe Tortilla - Good, Los Cucos in the Willowbrook Mall, terrible, Anothai cuisine - FM and Loretta, both are good, clean, good food, Campionis, Carabba's, Udipi Cafe, Himalaya (SW Freeway), Wazu, County Line BBQ, Brother's Pizza, Peli Peli, the Italian in Vintage Park, Via Emilia and a couple of other places in the area whose name I don't remember too well.

So, what else is good around here, and maybe a bit of a drive which is ok in the evening and weekends.

Any good Greek?
Any good Italian?
Any good Middle Eastern/Lebanese
Any Fondue (apart from Melting Pot)
Any good European?
Any good Chinese in the neighborhood? If not, where is the Chinatown that you recommend?
Any good Japanese?
Any others?

Would love your suggestions please, as I am becoming way too frequent at the places I know of!

Thanks so much,

New to Houston staying in the Northwest (Willowbrook) area

Hi,

I am in Houston for a couple of weeks at least on a work assignment. I am staying at a hotel very close to the Willow Brook mall, in Houston Northwest (77070).

I have a car and can commute.

I am looking for recommendations on places to eat, since I usually eat dinner independently, and sometimes meals on weekends.

I am not a wine drinker. I ate chicken and all vegetables, dairy, eggs, fruits etc. I do not eat other meats due to personal preferences. I love all styles of cooking.

Any suggestions please? Tex Mex? Chinese? Korean? Japanese? Italian? American Grill? BBQ? African? Middle Eastern? Indian? Others?

All suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,
Bon Appetit
