Curious, do you bag single veggies in the store or not?

I'll bag vegetables, not counting lettuce or cucumbers or garlic. Fruit it really depends...Anything hard like an apple or a pear can just go straight into the basket. Kiwi fruit could maybe do with a bag, same with white peachs or any soft stone fruit.

But I acutally try not to bag them. I dont need to use a plastic bag on one apple.

What Are Your Irrefutable Food Rules? [moved from Not About Food]

I have a few

Will not eat out or pay for food made by someone else unless I know it's going to be worth it and delicious and made with love. I'll bring my own food from home.

Pizza shall never come from pizza hut or the like. I'm a pizza snob it's true.

Soup and noodles will never come from a can or a packet.

Foods you always "deconstruct"

I eat like a child to be honest, I cant just eat something as is.

I must play with my food and pull it apart and only eat what I want to eat, leaving the rest.

I dont do this at other peoples homes of course or restaurants, I think that'd be rude of me to do!

But in the privacy of my own home (or with close friends) I let my inner child come out

Do you enjoy sugar-free and/or low fat products even though you're not on a diet?

I feel you on the salad dressings!

I much more enjoy a 'dry' salad than a soggy oily salad. I usually avoid ordering salads in restaurants or cafes for that reason, I feel like the odd one out asking for it without dressing and I get the "are you on a diet?" questions. Nope I'm not!

Do you enjoy sugar-free and/or low fat products even though you're not on a diet?

I eat non-fat yogurt. I just enjoy the taste more (though eating full cream doesnt bother me)

I greatly prefer coke zero over normal coke and most other full sugar soft drinks

I drink my coffee black, sometimes I'll add an equal in it just for kicks

Chew sugar free gum and I sometimes go through phases of eating these sugar free caramel lollies

whatever floats your boat I say.

What new food have you discovered recently?

Spices! Im having a lot of fun learning how to use them

Vietnamese, chinese, japenese etc. As a child I used to coil in disgust at the idea of
asian food! But as I've matured so have my taste buds and I'm finding the asian style of
cooking and eating really inspiring. Also re-discovered tofu and legumes.

Foods that you are embarrassed to tell people you actually eat (a.k.a. foods you only eat when alone).

Diet yogurt
Sweetner in my coffee

My friends find junk food (mcdonalds etc) more acceptable than fresh vegetables or fruits
sooo most of the foods I enjoy are apperntly weird and strange.

But I keep those two things hidden because everyone assumes I'm on a diet and I'm not!
I honestly just enjoy the taste over full fat yogurt and sugar, it's not a calorie thing at all.

am I a SNOB?

True, you are right! Introducing people to new things can be difficult, but wonderful once they open up and see the 'light'. I always try to reach out to people and suggest different things, usually it works but not always of course. I guess you just have to accept that people will change/try new things when they are ready and maybe they are content on jarred garlic over fresh or fresh over jarred.

am I a SNOB?

I dont think you are snobby, everyone has different tastes! Depends on the reaction..You could simply say (or not say anything at all) "Oh is it good? I acutally like so and so better, have you tried that?"

or you could scoff and judge someone for liking something that you dont, believing yourself on a higher level than this person and looking down on them. It's just accepting that everyone is different. I've been looked down upon because I dont make my own tomato sauce (ketchup) and I've been judged and slapt with a label because I choose not to eat red meat. Different strokes for different folks!

What is your "perfect breakfast"? [moved from Home Cooking]

Savoury and carby for me. Even though I love pastry and sweets, I usually feel like I need something warming and heavy to fill my stomach and sometimes spicy if my mood calls for it.

Perfect on any given day would be poached eggs and toast, infact, any kind of runny soft egg and toast. Maybe with roasted tomatos, mushrooms, spinach and the other usual sides. Definitely coffee, black with sugar, before and after eating.

My other perfect option would be a fresh fruit plate/salad. Watermelon, oranges, apples, honeydew, grapes, papaya, blueberries and so forth

What Food Trend are You So Sick Of?

I kind of have to agree with you on that. Everything has become a competition 'the best chef', 'the best new restaurant', 'the best of the best of bestest best best'. Who can find the most unique brand new boutique beer, oh my god I just found this hidden little cafe under a bridge and it's the size of a toilet and it's only open for 2 hours a day, no reservations.

I mean..Some of it IS amazing and I have been pleasently suprised and entertained by what chefs/restaurants are doing...But most of it is just hype and ego stroking. Cant we all just enjoy the food without it becoming some complicated race.

What Food Trend are You So Sick Of?

The new thing in my city seems to be 'tapas' or small tasting plates, this is great and I totally enjoy it. I mean who doesnt love tasty high quality snacks?! There are a number of restaurants taking this trend and turning it into something amazing.

But...when you're charged high prices for two small peices of toasted bread with a few bits of tomato on top and have it be called pintxos, when it obviously is just a restaurant taking advantage of a new trend is..sickening. Sick of restaurants running with a good trend and turning it bad.

What Food Trend are You So Sick Of?

Definitely, I do live in Australia and almost all restaurants/cafes have a GF opition, if not many or even a seperate menu dedicated to GF. Which I think is great to be honest, I know a few people who cant eat gluten and it's nice for them to be able to eat out.

Most disgusting taste (of normal foodstuffs)

sorry, I meant more..packaged foods, 'man made' I suppose. Things like oreo cookies or packet chips, perseratives/additives etc. I have nothing against them, just taste funny to me.

Most disgusting taste (of normal foodstuffs)

Potatos! Cream cheese
Peanut butter (I still cant understand why people love it so much)
Processed food, mainly because it just tastes like salt and chemicals to me, even chocolate
chip biscuits or sweet things, I can taste the sodium.
Most milk products, including milk. Something very off putting about the after taste. But I am fine with things made with milk no problem, just not straight.

Do Different Types of Alcohol Cause you to Act Differently?

Red wine - Sick, instant headache. Cant drink it for some reason

All clear spirits - Fun, talkative, lots of energy and usually my drink of choice seeing as though clear spirits never make me sick and I never go to far with them, including tequlia.

Dark spirits - Sick mainly haha, yeah my body just does not agree with anything dark.

White wine/champagne - Light headed, dazed, goes straight to my head literally. Then eventually it'll put me straight to sleep, moreso white wine than champagne.

Beer - Doesnt really have any effect on me, not that I drink it much.

Nasty Little Treats

As a kid I used to eat raw hot dogs, I loved them and everyone else definitely thought it was nasty and now I'd have to agree with them! I used to eat raw pasta aswell, lots of raw things it seems and I thought it was amazing

Jar(not the cold stuff) cream cheese on white bread with salt flavoured chips, one of my former favourite childhood sandwich

Avocado with condensed milk, I still love this, ohh it's soooo good

Hard boiling eggs, mashing them up with a bit of milk, salt and pepper on any kind of bread

two egg yolks, four teaspoons of sugar, vanilla and whip it up untill thick, light and creamy. My mum and nonna (grandmother) used to to make this for me for breakfast

chowhound formative influences?

Probably growing up within a very Italian family and then having an eating disorder, even though that sounds strange! But through the bad (eating disorder) I acutally discovered my true love of food and drink. Over coming that then lead to acutally exploring my Italian back round, which lead me to explore restaurants, cafes, bars and then acutally working in them. Finally I think the big push was when I found out who Anthony Bourdain is, I started reading his books and it all went up hill from there.

Do your friends invite you to dinner?

I wish I had friends to invite for dinner/be invited to dinner parties! I mean I have lots of friends, just none that enjoy food as much as I do or share my interest in food/hospitality. I'd happily throw a dinner party and I'll make you guest of honour!

Do you have a Bucket list? Do you have one for places to eat? Things, ways to eat? Same list, two lists?

Everything there is to see, feel, smell, experience, visit, do and EAT in Italy

I'd also love to eat my way around Asia, vietnam, singapore, japan etc

to visit/tour a winery, I have before but I was under 18 so I couldnt experience it in full. Add brewery to that aswell. I like to see where things come from and how it all works. Watching bakers bake, pastry chefs do their magic, how one gets honey. Any sort of food tour etc

See a 3 star kitchen in action, kitchens and chefs fascinate me, the whole kitchen dynamic.

I think thats it (I originally wrote I think thats eats haha, food on the brain!)

Waiting for a table - what's your limit?

Really depends on how I much I want to eat there, why I'm there or who I'm with

I can be extremely paitence, especially in good company. But basically, as soon as I start feeling bored or restless, I'm out of there and I'll find somewhere else.

What book are you reading?

Just finished Sex, knives and bouillabaisse by Teri Lousie Kelly, very interesting read.
before that I finished up all of Anthony Bourdains books, big fan of his books!

Now I need a new book! ASAP!

servers commenting on how much we ate - rude?

Very true, it's not always easy. As someone who has suffered from eating issues/body image issues in the past, sometimes comments would touture me for days, even weeks after it was said to me. But in the end, I was only hurting myself more than I deserved to be hurt. You know? It wasnt the other persons comment that hurt me, it was ME that hurt me. Its very hard, but its impowering to not give others the power to control how you feel.

servers commenting on how much we ate - rude?

I have a habbit of leaving food on my plate and I get comments from servers saying I should 'eat more', that I dont eat enough, am I saving room for dessert or what self restraint I show and how much self control I have. But it isnt like that at all, it's just what I do..But anyway the point I'm trying to make is, I think the servers (and I used to be one) try and find an "In" or common ground with the customer, make conversation and establish some sort of faux relationship. It's never anything personal, I'm sure half the time they are just trying to see if they can sell you more.

Burnt Fig Jam......What do I do with it?!?!

So I was giving a jar of Maggie Beers 'Burnt Fig Jam'

It acutally isnt a very pleasent tasting jam on it's own or on toast
it's extremely strong and needs something to go with it or cut through it

Does anyone have any ideas?! A cake maybe? I'm totally unaware of how to use it!
And I definitely dont want to throw it away, I think it could work well if used correctly

Help would be greatly appreciated please!
