Walking the Freedom Trail with Family - Need help finding Cheap Must Eats
Alright chowhounds, I need help. I only have 2 days in Boston. We will we walking the Freedom Trail and I only want to eat at places that are the best. We will be with kids and a senior so I need something that everyone will love. Nothing fancy shmancy, just great cheap eats. Thanks in advance for your help!
Mexican Grill in Poolesville, MD
Just went here and wanted to report. The food there is really good. The grilled chicken and steak are amazing. They have several homemade sauces which are also top notch. That's the good, here's the bad. The service is not fabulous, the menu is limited and they are really stingy with their chips and salsa. Some of the chips we did get were burnt also. We were the only people in the restaurant and had to wait too long in between times the waiter checked on us. They also don't have a liquor license yet. We asked about it and the waiter said that they are going to a hearing at the end of the month to get one. The bottom line is, if you happen to be in town, try it, but don't go too far out of your way.
Coalfire Pizza Kentlands
We went there when it first opened and thought it was ok, nothing spectacular. The pizza was fine, the roasted wings were good, different, but good. I wouldn't choose to go again but wouldn't refuse either. When we were there the employees were talking shop at the bar area which was a big turnoff.
Restaurant Everyone Hates But You
Everyone hates Chili's, heck, I even hate Chili's, but they have the best fried onion bloom of anyone out there. I will always go there for that, it is like a siren calling me in.
Restaurant Everyone Hates But You
Definitely second the harvest nut pancakes at IHOP. They are really the best!
Best Outdoor Dinner Dining DC or Va?
A great place is Caddie's on Cordell in Bethesda. They have great prices for happy hour and the wings and nachos are the best anywhere. Great atmosphere and they have 2 outdoor areas, one is out front and one is on the roof(it is covered though).
Looking for Sports Bar in North Potomac area
Thanks everyone for the recs/info. I didn't know about the new place where Mangiare Bene was. I am excited about it being a microbrewery. Update from dining last night.... We went to Hershey's, and I agree with nickdanger... we walked in and walked out. We went to the Endzone on Diamond Ave. It is new so we thought we would try it. The bar is great... a big beautiful place with big windows where you can watch trains go by. The food is not so great. The nachos had cheese sauce and you had to pay extra for protein. The gyro was made with pressed meat and the wings were wimpy and rubbery. Hard Times in Germantown is a good place to go.... Pelican Pete's, not. Haven't tried Red,Hot and Blue... thanks for the idea.
Looking for Sports Bar in North Potomac area
Besides, Fingers and Claws on Muddy Branch road(which is not recommended), does anyone know of a good place to get some wings and watch a game in the North Potomac/Kentland/Rio area?
Opinions wanted! Places to go in Rockville
Thanks reiflame. I will pass on it then. I tried Thai Jasmine Bistro recently and thought it was great also. The fried rice with pineapple, raisins and cashews is awesome and the pad thai was spot on.
Opinions wanted! Places to go in Rockville
Cool, thanks! I will definitely give it a try.
Opinions wanted! Places to go in Rockville
Thanks! I love peruvian and am always looking for new places. I have heard that A&J's is good. I definitely need to try that too.
Opinions wanted! Places to go in Rockville
It may have to do with who is working the kitchen also. When we were there it was a middle aged, overweight woman(always a good sign, and I can say that because I am an overweight middle aged woman, I can speak for my people ;) ).
Faidley's disappointment
Thanks for the post Crackers. I was wondering why they were saying saltines were "binders". When I add saltines to soup it isn't to bind anything, it is to make it more filling. Let's see if they respond.....
Faidley's disappointment
I didn't like cakes at Faidley's either. Undercooked and gummy... yuck. I was p.o.'d since you pay an arm and a leg for them. Won't go back. There are vendors who sell them in the market that have better cakes and better prices.
Opinions wanted! Places to go in Rockville
I would definitely agree that the artwork is, uh, interesting, and should be changed but the food was good(no buffet going at the time), and that makes up for a lot!
Opinions wanted! Places to go in Rockville
Just went to Azteca Bar and Grill on Friday. Highly recommended! The best Pupusas and Platanos Fritos in the area. It is right behind the 7-11 across from King's Farm development.
All-you-can-eat salad buffet bar + soups/bread
I lived in SoCal for a while and miss A LOT of the great places out there, including ST(Soup Plantation). Although it is absolutely not the same, I like the salad bar at Ruby Tuesday(I just had it yesterday, AAMOF). There is also a large salad bar at the Golden Bull in Gaithersburg MD. I went there once a long time ago and remember it being acceptable. The atmosphere in that restaurant, though, is a little creepy. It is recommended with reservations. For great breads and soups, a good alternative is Panera. Try the sunflower seed bread. Cheers!
Favorite Food Destination When Taking a Drive From DC?
The Tasting Room is definitely worth the trip. Another further up 270 is Weaver's in Hancock, MD. It is on the main road. Great home cooked food and the desserts are amazing. We always stop when we pass. They have pickled eggs on the salad bar! I don't know how far you want to go, but Miller's in Lancaster is the best farm fresh country food. The breakfast buffet is incredible.
A poster above mentioned the restaurant at Bavarian Inn. Although I highly recommend the hotel, we have stayed there several times, I thought the offerings in town were much better. I would agree with 3 onions and Stone Soup Bistro. Great service and friendly people at both. Have fun exploring!
Peruvian chicken - replacement for El Pollo Rico?
Has anyone yet tried the new La Brassa Grill in Germantown? Curious to know how it compares to Crisp and Juicy.
Peruvian chicken - replacement for El Pollo Rico?
That is great that you live where the good food is! I hope it is near your work too:) One of the main reasons I didn't want to leave my former job was because of the great places I could go for lunch!
Good Breakfast in Germantown/Gaithersburg
Thanks for the rec on Brooklyn Deli. Sounds good. Can you tell me more specifics on the location? Not sure I can picture where on Darnestown road that would be. Thanks!
Good Breakfast in Germantown/Gaithersburg
Thanks flavrmeistr. I will check out the lunch counter in old town. We went to Village Green today. Cheap eats and you get more than you pay for. I'm not saying it wasn't a greasy spoon... but I had a perfectly cooked poached egg and the pancakes were great(and huge). Definitely staying on my list.
Good Breakfast in Germantown/Gaithersburg
Reporting back on First Watch... Good, good prices. Great blueberry muffins. Not worth the wait though!
unsweetened, Dutch-processed cocoa in DC?
Penzey's Spices in Rockville, or Magruder's in Gaithersburg for Droste. Don't settle for Hershey's!
'FESS UP! You know you love chains!
The harvest grain pancakes at IHOP are the best, you're right! Thanks for posting!
'FESS UP! You know you love chains!
You lucky dog... you live in SoCal. So many great choices......
Good Breakfast in Germantown/Gaithersburg
Thanks! We like Star Diner but it is always so cold there! They have great healthy choices for breakfast and are one of the few restaurants that will give you skim milk for your coffee. We like Silver Diner as well, but as you say, the mall is not a fun place to go anymore.
