Oh boagman, you'll always be "that guy." :)

And wait -- you didn't do NC sauce on The Reason? I'm pretty sure that's illegal.

Have to say it really warms my heart that Slows hasn't jumped the shark. BTW, I usually ask for extra pickles for my Reason -- I can't get through a whole one so the extras come home and make the leftovers that much better.

DTW - Where to get shad roe

I managed to bumble my way into something edible. Enjoyable, but I don't think I'd do it again. Poached/baked in butter, then finished to brown on the burner. Sliced and doused in caper lemon pan sauce over bread grilled in the pan. Very rich. Mark that one off the bucket list...

Was there for dinner this past Sunday. Hourish wait at 6pm, but we snagged two seats at the bar after a few minutes. Food literally took five minutes to come after we ordered -- here I'd been planning to nurse my draft Hopslam and enjoy a little NCAA tourney ball, but instead I was cruelly force to attend to my Reason. The nerve! I don't know what is causing this super fast food delivery (maybe an effort to increase turnover/receipts?), but the food didn't suffer for it. The bark was crazy good.

Update: Superior has shad roe today. $8.95/pair of sacs. I got some, but have no idea what to do with it.

Give Superior Fish in RO a call. They have white bass roe sometimes. Shad roe might not be out of the question.

Too bad you missed the Groupon for this cwe -- $27 a pop a few days ago. Gone now, though.

Keep an eye on craigslist.

ETA: $50ish if you want to drive to GRR on Sunday.

Detroit Restaurant Week -- what to choose?

I went to Cliff Bell's Saturday night. My first time there, I'm sorry to say -- beautiful room. Food was meh. The beef carpaccio app was very nice, the pork belly was boring. Both the salmon and the short rib entrees were uninspiring. Not bad, just boring. My mates really enjoyed the chicken.

Looking forward to Rattlesnake this weekend.

Anniversary dinner within 90 minutes of State College

Thanks for the replies so far -- still a bit up in the air about whether we won't just postpone/advance the "nice" dinner entirely and do it back home. On the plus side I'm also socking all of these suggestions away for Thursday night. Have to come into town early for the bachelor party and we will certainly need to eat. Keep em coming.

Anniversary dinner within 90 minutes of State College

Done some digging but not nearly enough so hopefully you all can help me out. DH and I are off to a wedding in August in State College (we're based in Detroit), during which occurs our anniversary. We'd like to sneak off for a nice dinner on Friday, August 26. Any ideas? I'd been thinking about Meat and Potatoes in Pittsburgh but not sure we really want to drive almost three hours each way for that.

We stopped at Gamble Mill in Bellafonte last year on the way to Philadelphia. It was okay, nothing I'd go back to for an "anniversary dinner," though.

Chopstick Express, mentioned in another thread, intrigues me although I'm guessing it's not exactly white napkin...but if they have real deal dan dan noodle and/or lamb dishes I could be convinced.

Pizzeria Biga in Southfield, MI--- add this place to the debate

Nice writeup, boagman.

For those that haven't been in awhile, they have updated their menu quite a bit. New pizzas, etc. That said...I think pizza quality has been suffering. While it's still delicious, the last few times I have gone the pie has been soggier than I remember it being when they first opened. They're also overloading the roast vegetable (formerly roast zucchini) pizza with toppings (or maybe it's just too many tomatoes), at least for my taste, and especially when we're talking about a less crisp pie that is harder to control when weighted down with heavy toppings.

Won't really keep me from continuing to go there, however. Especially with the killer Monday deal.

Daisan Harumi

Thanks. Played it safe and wore ye olde black pants. Parfume...ew!

Kawashima-san took good care of us. There was only one other couple in the place (from 7-9p). Pretty quiet given my lack of Japanese but he and I made do with what little I do have. Many varieties of clam tonight, and the anago was excellent.

Daisan Harumi

Incredibly stupid question I'm sure, but I'm in Japan for the first time and haven't really felt this out yet. What's dress code for Dai San Harumi (and the like...)? My hotel concierge was able to make a reservation for me tonight. Hoping somebody is reading this in time.

Soup Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao) in metro-Detroit?

JP, if you ever want to go during the week for lunch I'm down.

bellmont, interesting -- I went there a week or two ago for lunch and didn't see anything about XLB. I will specifically ask for them next time.

The more restos the merrier! And welcome to the nabe. I'm biased but the Woodward corridor is really best for fanning out and accessing good chow. As long as you don't want, say, Peruvian food you should be in good shape.

Interestingly I was at Asia City in Ann Arbor for lunch today and they had a full stock of turtles ready for eating -- that building is garish though, wow.

Chinese food in Detroit [split]

Sorry, specific cuisine beside American/Cantonese and dim sum shops. Sichuan has new hope thanks to Trizest. Also I'd argue that GH draws primarily Chinese patrons because they have no other choice. GH is good but it is not on the level of what the OP is describing as his favorite haunts. Or what I'm interpreting them to be. :)

If you find a place serving Shanghai cuisine, let me know. XLB, kau fu, etc.

Chinese food in Detroit [split]

Unfortunately if you've been eating in China, HK, Flushing, Manhattan etc, you're going to be disappointed here. Viet and Japanese can be had, no problem, but Chinese of any specific cuisine beyond "American" is hard to find that will be up to what I suspect your standards are. On the other hand, though, a lot of the Chinese restaurants here have non-English menus, so I can't speak on those since I am usually limited to the English and servers always look at me like I'm crazy when I ask them to surprise me with something from the non-English menu.

Open your own restaurant, we will all patronize it frequently. :)

Leaf Lard SE Michigan

Not yet, I've delayed my trip until June to allow the radiation to properly seep into all foodstuffs in my quest to conceive a three-headed child. Or at least that seems to be what my family thinks is going to happen when I go.

Soup Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao) in metro-Detroit?

+1, good time, good company and good food. The soup dumplings were tasty although I felt the skins were a little bit thick and I like crab/pork mix better than plain pork, but beggars can't be choosers about this in the D. The vinegar sauce was excellent, right down to the ginger shreds.

Also, there was the utensil issue. I have always eaten xiao long bao with a Chinese soup spoon, the better to avoid a) burning the mouth with scalding broth from popped dumplings and b) losing any of the precious broth to the plate or chin. The waitstaff was happy to bring me one but I suspect others would have benefited from using this technique as well. goatgolfer mentioned eating a giant bao in Shanghai that involved a straw -- that sounds amazing, too! Interesting to see how different people had been educated on how to eat them, based on where they ate them before. I've only had them in NYC (Chinatown and Flushing).

I really, really hope that these end up on the regular menu. And I'm sorry I did not get Mrs. VTB's explanations -- maybe rainsux (or VTB himself) can provide a recap? I'd be interested to know what else I ate besides what I could identify on my own (xlb, chive dumpling, potsticker, red bean paste).

For future reference parking on Forest, west of Cass, is free -- no meters.
