Who do you follow on the Los Angeles board, and why?

I too would like an OC board. I think more OC people would speak up about OC restaurants if we had our own board. The way it stands now if someone mentions an OC place someone from LA makes disparaging remarks about food in OC.

Cooking with peanut butter

I frequently see Asian recipes that call for peanut butter. We only buy natural peanut butter (just peanuts and salt). Can this be used or do I need a peanut butter like skippys or jiff?

Crepes like the Magic Pan?

There's a crepe restaurant in Belmont Shore. It is done up like a French creperie and I thought it was quite good. They serve both savory and dessert creeps as well as quiches.

Yuma

Thank you Ed for such good tips. We'll definitely stay away from Italian! We are really looking forward to spending some time in your neck of the woods.

Yuma

We are going to be in yuma for several days next week and wonder if anyone has updates on the restaurant scene there. I've read past posts but none are very recent. Is Los Manjares de Pepe still highly recommended? Good Mexican, Italian or steakhouse all are appealing to us.

Use for an eye round roast

The latest Cooking Light magazine has a nice sounding recipe that turns an eye of round into sandwich slices or you could make tacos, fajitas, or salad out of the cooked meat.

OC restaurant week, where would you go?

OC restaurant week starts 2/23 with some nice sounding restaurants offering reduced lunches and dinner options. Anyone have any input on good choices.

Mrs. Knott's Fried chicken dinnner restaurant, what else is on the menu besides Fried Chicken as a main course, or is that all there is ???????

Was just there for lunch. Boysenberry jam was in one of those little sealed packages made by Smuckers. Biscuits were a little too dark on the bottom. Chicken noodle soup was okay but the cabbage was soggy. Chicken was just adequate.

How do I cook really tender green beans?

We like our green beans well done too and I find that frozen green beans never get "done". For fresh green beans I start them in cold water, bring to a boil, and then simmer uncovered for about 45 minutes. Sometimes I fry up bacon and chopped onion in the pot before I add the beans and cold water. Another option is to use canned green beans.

Sauerkraut

It's been refrigerated. Looks exactly like it did when I bought it but the date says best if used by 11/13. The only way we really like sauerkraut is in a Reuben sandwich.

Sauerkraut

How long will an opened jar of fresh sauerkraut last? I bought a jar that was in the deli section at the grocery store to make Reuben sandwiches and now have 3/4 of the jar left.

Sauerkraut how long

I have a jar of sauerkraut that has sat opened in my refrigerator for a couple of months. Is it still safe to use? It looks fine, no mold, smells like sauerkraut. I only used a small amount in a Reuben sandwich, stored the rest and now would like to make another sandwich.

Thanks for the info. I asked whole foods cheese clerk about the Bermuda Triangle and he didn't seem familiar with it.

Bermuda Triangle

Familiar with this goat cheese? I just tasted it at a restaurant where it was served with a roasted beet salad and fell in love with it. I don't usually like goat cheese but this one is firm and more mellow than other goat cheeses I've tried. So far I haven't been able to find it in any of my cheese stores. I'm in Southern California.

Lunch in Upland?

I've been tasked with finding a place where 12 senior citizen ladies can have lunch prior to going to a Wednesday matinee at the Grove Theater in Upland. We need a place close to the theater since we are coming up from Orange County in 3 separate cars so recommendations in Glendale, Eagle Rock, Pasadena, etc. aren't going to be very helpful. Any kind of food with the exception of Thai or sushi would be okay.

OC birthday lunch

Thanks to all. Seems that the best choice is Marche Moderne so that's probably going to be the choice although I wanted to avoid the mall.

OC birthday lunch

I'm taking my daughter to lunch for her birthday and am interested in suggestions. I considered Marche Moderne but kind of wanted to avoid the "shopping center" syndrome. I want some place in the Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Laguna Beach area, serves wine by the glass, has interesting salads, etc. I'm considering Plums in CM, Nicks in LB, First Cabin in NB. Any input?

Top Round Roast?

Success! I ended up using a modified version of the CI recipe and it was wonderful, a perfect medium-rare throughout without that horrible grey ring, and everyone loved it. Even heard several comments that they liked it better than standing rib. The only changes I made from the CI recipe was I made slits in the roast and inserted garlic slivers and also didn't turn the oven off but just roasted it until it reached 120º on my instant read thermometer. Thanks all for your help in making my birthday celebration dinner a huge success.

Top Round Roast?

I'm not sure what two choices you are referring to. My experience with chuck roast, seven bone or blade roasts are only worthwhile if pot roasted! I'm getting the top round from a reliable butcher that hasn't steered me wrong in the last 30 years. He deals almost exclusively with prime beef. I think I'll go with low and slow. Any tips on seasoning or length of time for a 5-pound rolled and tied top round roast?

Top Round Roast?

I've ordered a 5 pound top round roast from the butcher and now I'm wondering how to roast it so that it comes out medium-rare and not too tough. This roast was recommended by the butcher as a less expensive substitute for a standing rib. Will I be able to make a tasty gravy/sauce from the drippingts?
