Sasso chicken

Hi everyone,

Recently, there is a new type of chicken called "Sasso chicken" in supermarkets. I was wondering if anyone has tried it. What is it good for: soup, grilling, braising? What does the meat taste like?

Your feedback is most appreciated.

Thanks szw for the tip! I'm looking for cooking surface unit on top, not the butane unit.

Korean indoor gas grill‏

Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever used this indoor gas grill before? If yes, what is your opinion of it (pros and cons)? Also, where can you buy it in Toronto, and how much approximately?

Thank you in advance!

SunFood Supermarket in Markham

A few weeks ago, Oriental Supermarket in Markham changed its name to SunFood Supermarket without changing ownership. Everything in store still remain the same, except for the store sign.

Just wondering if anyone know the story behind the name change. What prompted the owner to change the store name?

Cooking forums for Toronto chefs

Does anyone know of any cooking forums for Toronto chefs ONLY? I know George Brown has a culinary program, so I presume the students may have an online forum where they go to exchange ideas. Does anyone have any info on this?

Thank you in advance for your input!

Eric

One-stop baking supplies store in Scarborough/North York?

Thanks for your detailed tips, StayThirsty!

I just checked Williams Sonoma's website. The French tapered rolling pin is list as $22.18 (http://www.williams-sonoma.com/produc...). They sell stick rolling pins in Chinese supermarkets for under $1. For the $21.18 difference I can try sanding down the two ends myself. What a rip-off Williams Sonoma shop is.

afong56: When you say "there", do you mean Tap Phong? How tapered was it, slightly or as tapered as the ones in the picture?

Thanks for all your tips!

I contacted Tap Phong and was told they don't have tapered rolling pins.

Vital Wheat Gluten - differences?

Where can you buy Vital Wheat Gluten in Scarborough or GTA, and around how much per pound?

Bulk Barn's website has a product called "gluten flour" (http://www.bulkbarn.ca/en-ca/products...), don't know if it's the same as vital wheat gluten?

Regards,

Eric

One-stop baking supplies store in Scarborough/North York?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of a one-stop baking supplies store in the Scarborough/North York area? Not only carries baking tools but also flour, yeast, etc. Preferably a Chinese baking supply store.

I'm in particularly looking for High Gluten Flour, Vital Wheat Gluten, and tapered rolling pins like these. I could not find them in regular supermarkets.

Thanks you!

Eric

Chicken and ducks in supermarkets

Does anyone know what breeds of chicken and ducks are sold in Chinese supermarkets? Here is a list on Wikipedia, just don't know which ones are being sold in GTA.

And where do they come from (raised in)?

Also, is everyone also aware of this issue - "Superbugs in the Supermarket"

Hope to hear your feedbacks.

What is the different between Korean soy sauce and Chinese soy sauce? [moved from Ontario]

I'd like to try making my own Kalbi sauce for a change and wonder what the difference is in taste between Korean soy sauce and Chinese soy sauce?

Or a better question is what types of soy sauces do Koreans use for their cooking?

Below is a good link on the recipe.

▇▇▇ Looking for economical do-it-yourself sushi ingredient suppliers ▇▇▇

I've been to the PAT's in Scarborough and they don't have fresh fish.

Foody's Supermarket at Warden and Bamborough has a sushi counter. They have a guy who supplies them with ready-made stuff. All they have to do is make the rice and place the ingredients on top.

This is what I'm looking for, ready-made sushi ingredients at a reasonable cost.

Thanks!

▇▇▇ Looking for economical do-it-yourself sushi ingredient suppliers ▇▇▇

I'm talking about everything: fish(ready-to-eat sashimi), fish roe, imitation crab meat, etc. Everything ready to serve, almost.

▇▇▇ Looking for economical do-it-yourself sushi ingredient suppliers ▇▇▇

Thank you for reading this post.

I'm planning to make sushi for my own consumption. I am looking for stores/individuals that sell sushi ingredients at a reasonable price. I find Taro's Fish's ingredients are pricier than Chinese supermarkets sell their final products. Does anyone know any store or individual supplier, preferable in the North York, Scarborough areas that you can recommend?

Thank you in advance!

Dim Sum lunch at Regal 16 - Ordinary presentation but great tasting.

Just an observation, it's interesting how two different individuals can have two completely different opinions on the same restaurant - Regal 16.

Spiny Lobster

Has anyone ever tasted spiny lobster before? What is the taste like compared to American lobster? Where to buy in GTA? And how much a pound?

The search for acceptable Dim Sum continues! - This time, 'Sam Woo Seafood Restaurant'.

Hi Charles,

Appreciate this type of threads you started. Hope you also provide the pricing at each Dim Sum restaurant as well. (e.g., price for Small, Medium, Large, and special price hours, etc.)

Have you come across any restaurant charging lower than $1.50 a dish?

Please welcome anyone else to contribute.

Eric

What is this Italian dish called?

"cioppino".

No, that's still not it. This is Italian. There is an English name for it. It just escaped my mind.

Ace Baguettes - bake at home

Where can you buy frozen Ace Baguettes?

Price of kosher salt

The price of kosher salt at no frills is $4.99, three times the price of sea salt. Is this normal? I thought it's cheaper to make kosher salt? Could someone shed some light?

Eric

Looking for the best kaiser bread in Toronto

Thanks for your reply juno! Yes, Kaiser rolls is what I meant. The last time I was at Bagel Plus I was told they didn't sell kaiser rolls.

I wish there were more of these types of Jewish bagel shops in the east end. Are there any in Scarborough?
