Any "not fancy" suggestions?
Try le denier metro for good, simple, well prepared food. It's our first stop. Also, check out Paris by Mouth for more advice.
Help!! Does anyone know of a dinner and dancing (not latin; big-band) restaurant/supper club in Chicagoland?
OK. You said you were looking for "a fancy-schmancy dinner" with dancing. FOOD: If you read this site, you won't care for the food as it is "banquet service," which defeats any chance of several of the offerings from being presented correctly. Rolls were good. The fruit desserts were ripe. (Read the food comments on Goldstar before you order.) WINE: The list wasn't inspiring, but had drinkable items. DRESS: Most people did NOT dress up, although there were several smashing exceptions. DANCE: The band has three players and a synthesizer. They play the first set with mostly stuff your husband can fall around the floor to and not be noticed, while the final set is current music that takes more exertion. But, he'd probably fade into the crowd with that set, too, as most dancers came out for that one. SETTING: The yacht is very nice as are the views of the skyline at night. SERVICE: The crew and servants are extremely caring, if a bit ignorant. Overall we had a good time because: we tried to dance every dance and the dances were obvious as to the step (we are enthusiastic, but poor dancers); the service tried very hard; the food was "banquet" passable; we drank too much; and, the setting is very nice. My earlier comment reflects my feelings about the food and your desire for "a fancy-schmancy dinner"...
GOOD luck and let us know what you do.

Well, we went on the cruise last night and, in three words I'd say, "Do not go!"
Feasts at home - deli/food shop/ethnic market recommendations?
You need to try Calumet Fisheries http://www.calumetfisheries.com/reviews.html. The smoked shrimp is incredible! It's way down on 95th Street, but close to I-90. If you want to thrill your friends at a pitch-in, grab something smoked from this place. Happily we have to drive by there on our way to and from Chicago.

No, but on our next visit we reserved a dinner cruise with a live band leaving from Navy Pier. Check gold star for deals.
FOldie 's first trip to Rome...a day by day account
Saturday we had toast, jam and coffee on the balcony, pizza for late lunch after the Palatino and Coliseum, and pasta and sauce with cheese, some nice wine, and pastry on the balcony...long walk today. Three scoop Gelato sometime this evening.
FOldie 's first trip to Rome...a day by day account
Thanks...will try again.
And, Campana is just around the corner from our apartment.
FOldie 's first trip to Rome...a day by day account
Could not find Filette di Baccala....walked, mapped, Earth Googled....no could find.
Had fun with tourist food at Campo di Fiori. Nothing worth reporting.
FOldie 's first trip to Rome...a day by day account
landed this mprninG early and our driver found us after several mishaps. got to the apartment on Lungotevere Marzio, unpacked took a "shake it off "walk around the neighborhood.everything is closer, smaller than the map implies.
we walked right past L'0rso 80 and found it on the way home from Navarone. The house anti pasta with house red and sparkling water was great. Many sides were added plus fresh fruit dessert. Just wonderful!,, 25 EU each.
Foodie's !st visit to Rome.. apt between Pontes Umberto and Cavour on the south bank.
We are eight days and counting down to plane time! Our eighteen year old grand daughter is joining us for three days including a Vatican tour...we're thrilled she wants to spend time with us. Anything of special interest for her close by?
Home Food: experience?
At the risk of showing myself to be a total fool, was there a dinner date between May 20 and 28 in a close shot from Rome that I missed seeing? The opportunity this group offers appears to be worth showing all my faults if that is what it takes to get a reservation....gosh, we are really excited about this trip! And, my grand daughter is coming to share a few days with us! yippee!
Guy Savoy lunch special, is it worth it or can I do better?
Buyer beware. Read everything above carefully and consider the sources. I believe that an accurate summary here is that a 100EU each "special" is PROBABLY 400EU or more for two. If that fits your needs, go for it!
Guy Savoy lunch special, is it worth it or can I do better?
We had reservations for the 100EU lunch and, after much thought and the help of a CH thread on the subject, we decided to cancel.
My wife felt the whole thing was too decadent for her taste.
I was excited about the possibility, but got three concerns from the CH thread... First the special rate got a special table, which I figured was probably the worst in the place and known to regulars as the "special table." Second, the description of how one would be tempted with by-the-glass wine to the tune of 200- 400EU extra reminded me of "traps" in NYC. And, third, I can afford anything we want, and what we really wanted was good food at a reasonable price and an experience we could be proud of...so we stood in line at le Comptoir.
We were pleased with our choice.
LRSH or the original? and pl help to eliminate my list...
I'd eliminate the two repeats and replace them with "less eating." you will enjoy the remaining places more.
And, there is so much more to fine dining in Paris than stuffing your days with too much food from name restaurants. And, who has the time to sit for that many hours with all there is to see and do?
Wantzenau--near Strasbourg, Alsace
Thanks. This site and me in particular have been looking for good things in or near Stasbourg.
Last Meal
"Suppose you had just one night in Paris to have your Last Meal"
I would lease the best apartment available with a balcony and a view. I would ask my wife to supervise the meal and sit by my side while we enjoyed the best Paris had to offer, prepared on our own stoves. And it would be beyond the beyond!
That's this old man's wish...
HELP! Major trouble getting a rez at Frenchie in Paris
Thought Frenchie bagged the lunch thing....Better call at the later time. For the sake of TheRobin, please correct me if I'm wrong here.
3 nights in Paris. 30 to 100 Euro/persons for dinner. Anything that will blow me away?
I'm not the best source for dinners, but my response will shoot your post back to the top and others will notice.
I like Hidden Kitchen, however, reservations are tough to get. Their website shows that they have openings in mid June. go to http://www.hkmenus.com/index(old).html Tell them about the allergies and they'll work around them or advise you to skip something. Too bad as they serve the only mackeral I could ever enjoy so far in my life.
I also like au Dernier Metro because it is loud and fun and the food is very good and inexpensive.
Have a great time!!!
And, chez l'Ami Jean has always been good to me (lunch) but you might wish to do a search to pick up the positive and negative buzz of recent posts.
You might also look into le Comptoir...again, I've only done lunch there....it's tight, no reservations, just gt there by 11:30 AM.
Ze Kitchen Galerie lunch report
Thanks for the report.
Did you post a question on chowhound before your trip? I couldn't find one.
Please tell us about the rest of the visit.
40th Birthday in Paris
You'll need to be more specific as to what you are looking for. And, a price range would be helpful.
Try again.
And, have a great time and lots of fun on your birthday!!

We still have some hopes here...posted, registered twice, posted again...nothing....
Will there be any activities in Rome between May 20th and 29th?
Strasbourg
If you are thinking about Au Crocodile, you might care to do a search on this board about the place.
There good places in the surrounding area, which you no doubt read about with your searches. There just doesn't seem to be much if you are without a car.
Paris restaurants: good fish, romantic, not super expensive
I am thrown by some terms, one of which is "romantic." To me and few others romantic is a place that means something to "us," me and MBFF. With that definition, plus you said " not super expensive" we go to Au Dernier Metro on very trip and eat the fish. It is often the first night and then it is also the night I get ticked off at bad manners by other restaurants ( a fall back place we can count on) and when we have informal guests.
But, we are odd.
Have a good time and tell us everything...well, NOT everything...
Advice on these restaurants
Yes, do the luncheon at le Comptoir....
Reconsider Frenchie because it is quality at a bargain price.
Add some picnics and graze through several markets...swig some wine...I buy lots of bottles and drain what's not to please down the sink or pass to folks seating close by. All that is great in Paris is NOT in Michelin starred restaurants!
