1st time in Chicago....

I would recommend going to Blackbird. It has a much more "sexy" ambiance and is someplace I would go to celebrate.

I have been to Blackbird several times over the years and have always had a wonderful experience. I ate at Aigre Doux only once - and while the food was very good, the service was lacking.

Blackbird or Spring?

They are both an excellent choice, you won't be disappointed either way.

However I will say that I have been to Blackbird on several occasions, where I was only at Spring once and never felt the urge to go back.

Looking for recommendations in the Wrigley Field area.

My favorite spots near Wrigley:

Tuscany
Francesca's (they have the most adorable outdoor patio in back)
Sheffields
Matsuya
Uncommon Ground (great brunch or lunch spot)

Where can I get homemade chicken soup/broth?

The Bagel on Broadway!! I love that place. The Soupbox is also a good bet.

Input on My Dining Choices

1. Never been.
2. Great choice!
3. Go to the Greek Islands (casual and lively atmosphere), or Santorini (more upscale).
4. If you are a wine lover, stop in across the street at House of Glunz.
5. Yummy comfort food.
6. The service is impeccable and the presentation is out of this world, but the flavors fell short for me.
7. Go to Adobo Grill around the corner. One of my favorite places for Mexican!
8. Check out Tuscany, or Fly Me to the Moon, which are a little bit more upscale than other Wrigley spots. If you just want a burger or wings go to Yakzies or Irish Oak.
9. Amazing.. you will LOVE it!
10. I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. If you are looking for seafood in a quirky spot, I'd go to Raw bar or Cy's on Ashland instead.
11. Onesixtyblue or Volo in Roscoe Village.

Have fun!

IF you had to choose 2 places downtown

There are so many places to choose from, it is hard to make a recommendation based on just places with an entree $25 and under.

But, going just on price and within about a mile radius of Navy Pier (which is my definition of "downtown") I would recommend Green Zebra and Francesca's on Taylor.

If you are interested in venturing further north into more of a neighborhood, I'd recommend Volo in Roscoe Village (wine bar with great food) and Cafe Matou in Bucktown (french).

Moving to Chicago

Excluding East Rogers Park, because I don't know much about that area - based on your love of dive bars and farmers markets, I'd say you really can't go wrong with any neighborhood you listed except for Goldcoast. The Goldcoast really doesn't have many dive bars, it's more touristy and expensive types of places.

There are farmers markets all over the city.

Welcome to Chicago!

eating alone and expense account

Go to Onesixtyblue, where you can eat in the dining room, bar or lounge area. The staff is always so friendly and I always seem to chat up a conversation with the bartender, waiter or manager - and have done so on several occasions.

Avec would also be a great place to go and is a little more casual. I have had the opportunity to meet people sitting next to me - but just because the seating is communal, often they slit up the tables and/or either party is engrossed in their own conversations. The staff is also less likely to be chatty.

Avec- Watch your back

I wholeheartedly agree with NW on Avec.

I have been there numerous times, and have always had a wonderful meal and outstanding wine. It is truly a special place. The food it really good and the service is great. It's very eclectic and a unique experience. I've never felt the seating is uncomfortable.

Sorry to hear about the mishaps with the OP. I've never witnessed anything like that.

Need opinions please!

Make Cafe Spiaggia a definite on your list. For a great relaxed lunch within walking distance to Water Tower, check out Dublins on State.

SUSHI on the MAG. MILE

Head over to Randolf and eat at Sushi Wabi. It's worth the cab ride.

Afternoon tea in Chicago?

I am the high tea expert.

Peninsula is my absolute favorite. They have the best food, and unique teas.
Ritz comes in second. They have the best atmosphere.

I don't recommend the Drake. It's dark and drabby. I've never been to Russian Tea Time.

Onesixtyblue is definitely worth checking out! I'd also recommend Cafe Spiaggia, MK and Green Zebra.

Saturday Lunch Rec's

I was at Shedd Aquarium this summer with my Nephews and we ended up eating there out of convenience. The food wasn't terrible, and they have a few different stations set up with different alternatives.

American Girl also has a cafe, but I've never eaten there. RL is right next door, which is one of my favorites- but it is quite heavy. Right across the street in Watertower is Foodlife which has a great variety, but will likely be madness during this time of year.

If I were you, I'd eat at Shedd or at Fox & Obel cafe which is right by the condo you are renting.

Casual dress, fantastic food? Cafe Spiaggia/one sixtyblue

You'll have an excellent experience at both places, and jeans are acceptable as well. Enjoy!

Good Lunch Spot

I have eaten at Topo Gigio a few times for lunch and have never been disappointed. It's a little further north than the loop on Wells.

Cafe Spiaggia is pretty hard to beat. Coco Pazo and Bice are ok.

Authentic Mexican - Not Nuevo Leon

Sol de Mexico. It's on Cicero just south of Belmont. Absolutely the best Mexican I think I've ever had.

chicago - state street area

I second Blue Water Grill. Hip, lively, very good food with an emphasis on fish and offers raw oysters. Not stuffy or uptight, but yet upscale. Enjoy!

Romantic upscale dining around Dearborn and Ohio

You'll be hard pressed to find anything quiet near Dearborn and Ohio on a Saturday night! Sorry:)

I would stick with Everest or head west to A Tavola which is more low key and romantic.

Upscale dinner for large group?

I would look into MK. They might be just what you are looking for. The food is excellent, and the dining room is segmented as to provide a semi private area for larger groups.

For something a little more interesting, check out Tizi Melloul. They have a really cool round private room where you are seated close to the floor on pillows.

near magnificent mile

Well, it depends how far you want to travel. Just north of the Mag mile in Lincoln Park (10 minute cab ride) is Northpond. Which would be ideal for a wedding anniversary.

Closer to where you are staying is Crofton on Wells, Pane Caldo or Everest which are also all very good places for a special celebration.

I've been to Todai. If you want variety and all-you-can-eat, its the place to go. The food didn't blow me away, however.
