Good food in the South End, off the radar
For dinner, there's an entree menu with about 6 or 7 items and in lieu of an apps menu, there's the slightly annoying (only because too long) small plates menu, on which many of their really delicious apps have survived (sambal wings, butternut squash ravs, etc.). Was there for brunch over the weekend too and that menu is untouched though I don't think one has access to the small plates menu as well but don't quote me on this.
Good food in the South End, off the radar
I was at Pops last Thursday, 1/14, and had the mix grill snausages with the poutine. It was ridiculously rich and delicious. Maybe at one point they served the poutine as a side? In any event, the new bar looks slick. The small plates menu is a list of no less than 25 plates from least expensive to most. I wanted to sample more of the small plates but was overwhelmed by the long list of dishes that I thought lacked proper organization and went with an entree instead.
Overall, I like the elongated/new bar at pops and the focus on small plates but the menu needs to be categorized or something. It's way too dense as is.
Korean BBQ
Taking a group out for Korean BBQ. Is there a "must go to" place in and around Boston?
Best ice cream cake
Awesome analysis of the JP v. Tosci as well as the options available for jp licks. I think i will stick to JP for the "cake" and Tosci for ice cream craving. Thanks, amatto!
Best ice cream cake
So with my birthday approaching, I'm treating myself and friends to ice cream cake. After calling Toscis, I was disappointed to learn that they don't do an all ice cream cake option anymore -- there's a layer of cookie/cake on the bottom now. I'm looking for all ice cream. Explored the JP Licks options online and theirs is cake-less. Any opinions? Anybody have the Toscis cake-version recently and can comment on the bottom layer? Thanks in advance.
Inexpensive Liquor Stores in Boston Area
i 2nd, 3rd and 4th liquor land. i think they're having a holiday wine tasting on saturday. you can check out the hen house next door and try their delish fried chicken and tasty micro-brewed sodas. just avoid everything else.
Steak Pizza at the Dogwood
i think upper crust has a steak and gorgonzola combo on their menu but can't vouch for its taste.
Choco Choco House South End
Anybody know what happened to it? It shut down about a month ago, its website gone and a sign in the window that "European Chocolate coming in February." Really enjoyed choco's truffles, albeit pricey.
Also noticed Aroa chocolates opening even closer to me than Choco House, on Washington b/n W. Concord and Worcester. Here's what I found about it: http://stuffatnight.com/boston/hubbub/archive/2007/12/12/sweets-dream.aspx

New Chocolate Shop in the South End
Choco Choco House on Pembroke near Tremont (adjacent to My Nail Salon).
Let's face it, we all like Pu Pu Platters sometimes
Pho Republique does a yummy app. combo platter although they don't call it a pupu. Everything is made there and the tuna/avo fried springrolls are divine as are their candied spareribs.
fresh turkeys on the N. Shore
'Hounds:
Last year went with a friend to a Wilson Farm-like place on the N. Shore. Not as huge, featuring farm animals outside near the parking lot and the piece de resistance, IMO, their farm-raised, fresh-killed turkey. Relatively inexpensive and bursting with flavor. The problem: can't for the life of me remember the name of the joint. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!
Clam Pizza ??
Am I missing something? I've been to Santarps a bunch of times and never seen/smelled/tasted the clam pizza. Is there a special signal you have to give the waitsaff to get it? Very curious...
Anyone Been to Plum Produce
I've been 2x in the last two days. Wonderful heirlooms at 4#. Sorry, but not a bad price at all. Yesterday they had figs at $.35/each and yummy looking cantaloupes @ $5 each though today, oddly, they were $2.50#. Also got delicious HUGE heirloom apples. I'm not a scallion buyer, but it doesn't seem like a horrible idea to buy things by the stalk versus a package that might not get used. The confitures are addictive and although expensive at $10/(small) jar, definitely worth the splurge.
Affordable vanilla beans
South End Formaggio recently had a two pack of plump, fresh ones for $3.95.
