Unusual request - bad tasting foods
I have to emphasize beany's response...BITTER MELON!!! My grandma loves it, but it is the most bitter thing I've ever tasted. If Miracle Fruit works on bitter melon, then it truly deserves its name.
Unusual request - bad tasting foods
Funny, that exact same thing happened to someone I know! They actually evacuated her building because her co-worker had opened a bag of Durian Waffer cookies.
I was taking a tropical botany class and we brought fruit in to class to try the more unusual ones, and I brought a frozen durian I bought from a Chinese supermarket. The grad students wanted to all try a piece, and we ended up stinking up the whole botany department floor! Jack Fruit, a relative to the durian, has a similar repugnant smell, though not as strong, imo.
Best Ice Cream in los angeles????
I have a soft spot in my heart for the double scoop cones I used to get at Thrifty as a kid. Cookies and Cream/Mint 'n' Chip combo was my favorite! Now that I've grown up a little, I love the goat cheese flavors I've gotten from both Pazzo Gelato and Scoops.
Suggestions for Santa Clarita
I like Kisho! Sit at the sushi bar and Alfred the sushi chef will take care of you. He's awesome and makes a wonderful "Halloween" roll. Yum.
Bubble Tea/Boba
Good quality boba balls should have a slightly sweet flavor and enhance the overall flavor of the drink. The balls are made from cassava starch. I've enjoyed boba for years, though its been quite awhile since I've had some...I'm trying to cut down on sugar, otherwise I would have bought some this evening! It was such a popular fad when I was in high school...a lot of us even learned how to make it at home.
Why isn't there a Chinese (or other Asian) show on Food Network?
I don't need to watch Food Network to see a Chinese cooking show. I can just watch my grandma. Better yet, I get to eat once the show is over. =D
Food Network can't compete with my Ama.
Energy bars that taste good?
The Clif kid's bar is the Z Bar! Flavors I've had are "chocolate chip" and "chocolate brownie". I also bought "honey graham" and "peanut butter" and I'm going to try them this week. They're yummy, and not too sweet. Much less filling than a whole Cliff bar. They're the perfect size for me. I do like the special holiday Cliff bar flavors, but I usually have to split them in half.
I tried the key lime Larabar today and it was very good!
What do you think of Rachael Ray's picks?
If RR's picks help weed out the tourists and tunnel-visioned West-Siders from my favorite quality SGV and IE restaurants, then more power to her.
Where to buy good Quiche for take-out?
I can tell you where not to get one: Mimi's Cafe. I got one once for take out and it was horrible! No flavor at all.
What to eat with cottage cheese?
Ohhh can you get the recipe from her and post it on the recipe board? I'm intrigued.
Lee's Sandwiches
I've seen ice cream at one of the locations...I believe it was Rosemead...the one with the drive-thru! Sandwich was good, but not as great as other Bahn Mi I've had from non-chain restaurants. Their neon-green coconut waffles intrigued me, but it tasted very plain.
Soup for a sickie
I hope you feel better soon. Keep in mind that ginger is good for you when you are sick, so if you have the option, choose a soup with some ginger in it. Stay warm and get rest!
Kroepoek... or why is "Chinese" food different in various countries?
This thread reminds me of a documentary series I've been meaning to find. Its called "Chinese Restaurants" and its about how Chinese have brought their cuisine to every corner of the globe, and the people behind them. The series has stories about Chinese in Norway, South Africa, Argentina, Israel, etc. I'd be very interested to know how the series is from anyone who's watched it! http://www.tissa.com/index.html
"Waitress" the Movie--All Those Pies
What a lovely movie. So funny and sweet and a little different. I love seeing all those creative pies she came up with. Its all the more touching when you hear about the writer/director Adrienne Shelley's untimely death! And the little girl at the end that plays Lulu is her real daughter! So sad....
I got the Border's edition of the DVD and it included several recipe cards for the pies in the movie (including Mermaid Pie!). If I were a pie, I would be "Trying To Keep My Head Above Water and Still Have a Life Pie" and it would have a graham cracker crumb crust, coconut milk custard, chopped fresh mango, topped with rum and set en flambé.
Yogurtland in Irvine
Do they charge by the ounce? Yogurtime in Upland is also self-serve and charges $0.36/oz, so I can get a nice size cup comparable to Pinkberry's small (5 oz) for under $2. Their pomegranate flavor is very tasty.
Blue Bayou Disneyland Report
I got the Beef Short Ribs in Zinfandel sauce when my family went for my Mom's birthday about 1 1/2 years ago...I thought they were delicious! Very tender, and the sauce was rich. My family enjoyed our experience, and we definitely didn't think "airline food"!!! But maybe we just don't have as discerning palates as you folks...
TESCO Fresh and Easy
How is British Back Bacon different from regular bacon? And is the F&E version comparable to the stuff in the UK? (Is it worth my $5?)
P C H eats
Malibu Seafood is my favorite place for fish 'n' chips. My sister also liked the clam strips.
Triscuits flavors...any good?
Yea, I was especially wondering about cracked pepper flavor, because I love a strong pepper flavored snack, like the Kettle Salt & Fresh Ground Pepper chips. The kettle chips are so oily, and I always feel guilty eating them, so replacing them with the triscuits would be great.
Triscuits flavors...any good?
Has anyone tried the newer Triscuit crackers with olive oil and tomato, rosemary, or cracked pepper? I've been eating my favorite Tasty Little Crackers, but I want to give these Triscuits a try if they are any good!
pasadena discovery
I tried the Daisy Noodles and the Barley and Corn tea on Saturday. Very good food. What an adorable place! The staff were so friendly too. I hope they thrive.
Looking For A Slice Of Pie
I wish I could find a pie place like in "Waitress" or "Pushing Daisies"... are any of these places like that??...hahaha
Looking For A Slice Of Pie
Having worked at a Marie Callenders while in high school, I do have a sentimental place in my heart for them...well, maybe just for the restaurant I was working in. Plus my aunts have brought their pies to family functions for YEARS. But I now refuse to buy their pies. I was horrified one time when my family bought a "blueberry" pie and discovered (gasp) purple jello in the filling in place of real blueberries! How dare they?! Come on, thats just sad.
I have to say though, they do have good muffins.
Shuttle to Walt Disney Hall?
You might try Pete's. They have a shuttle stop outside their restaurant for the Thursday evening art walk, so its possible the shuttle goes to the concert hall. Their food is pretty good and not terribly expensive.

Yes, I have to get the bread at China Islamic, but WHICH one?
The sesame bread with green onion and the green onion pie are both wonderful. I haven't tried the sesame bread without green onion because I just love green onions so much. And when the sesame bread comes to your table straight out of the oven, steaming hot, the crunchy sesame crust and the pillow-soft bread inside flecked with the savory green onions, its just pure pleasure. PLEASE eat it with their assorted warm pot!!! My family always does. Perfect cold weather comfort food for me.
The green onion pie at China Islamic is one of the best I've tried. Many restaurants serve it, but their's is consistently good, IMHO. I eat it wrapped around their sautéed green beans or their noodles (yumm...starch on starch).
HELP!! Can't find TRADER JOES PEPPERMINT JOJO's ANYWHERE IN LOS ANGELES
A bit of a drive, but the last time I was at the Upland store (on Mountain Ave, north of the 10 fwy) last week, they had a whole stack of them. I was surprised they still had so many!
favorite thing to eat from panera?
Wow I can't believe no one has mentioned the Baked Egg Soufflés!!! I love those! Especially the spinach & artichoke one.
