Chick-N-Joy... finally tried it.

I'll revisit my original thread starting post from 2006 to state we love Chick-N-Joy and go there regularly. The quality seems to have steadily improved over the years and when the chicken is fresh out of the fryer it is fantastic... plus price wise it is hard to beat. It is our go to chicken spot, usually once per month or so. Def recommended for those in the area.

Toronto Gourmet Brunch suggestions

I would normally echo Globe but given your description try C5. Had an excellent brunch there this past weekend, definitely what you are looking for. Wife had the bacon stuffed pancakes with foie gras torchon, I had the lobster english muffin. The bacon menu is a thing of beauty too... the guanciale in particular was amazing.

Scarpetta in Toronto

Agreed 100%, to me Pataki's reviews are generally terrible as she always seems to have an axe to grind with any 'fine dining' type place. From personal experience we had a fantastic meal at Scarpetta a few weeks back and was wondering based on her review if Pataki went to the right place. The Globe's review is much closer to our experience if that counts for anything.

bonjour brioche - do they have a take out counter?

Yes they do. It will definitely be a zoo in there on Mother's Day though so if you need a lot of stuff you might want to call ahead and reserve.

Best splurge dinner?

If you really want to splurge you could take a night and head up to Eigensinn Farm... that would be my first choice.

Otherwise the Kitchen Table Tasting Menu at Colborne Lane would definitely be memorable... and of course a tasting menu at one the usual suspects (Canoe, Scaramouche George, etc) would certainly fit the bill.

Places that sell Global G-2/MAC MTH-80?

Last time I was there Tap Phong on Spadina had a large selection of Global knives... best prices in the city too, should be your first stop for Global.

Toronto's Best Steak Frites

That Scaramouche review was by Gina Mallet so no big surprise, pretty sure she hates every restaurant in Toronto. :-)

Dinner at Nota Bene - A Review

We went for lunch today and it was truly outstanding. The suckling pig/boudin noir tart could be the best dish in the city IMO... crazy rich, decadent, and delicious. Everything else we had (charcuterie plate, tuna tartare, stilton/brisket burger, shaved onion rings) was excellent as well. Can't wait to go back... Splendido calibre food at reasonable prices, you can't go wrong.

Toronto's Best Steak Frites

Second the recommendations for Le Paradis and Batifole. Le Select is decent as well... to me any good french bistro would be your best bet.

Where to get apple wood chips in Toronto?

I just picked up some applewood chips from Home Depot (Curity location), have found that not every store stocks the applewood chips though so your mileage may vary.

Jamie Kennedy's Gilead Café?

Hit Gilead Cafe for lunch Thursday and it was great, will definitely be a regular spot for lunch. We had the daily poutine (with northern woods mushrooms, sheep's milk cheese, and mushroom jus), sandwich (roasted ribeye, ermite, house made mayo), and soup (green garlic & asparagus) and all were very tasty. Definitely recommended, looking forward to my next dose of JK poutine already.

MEATing on Queen-new butcher shop

That would be 'George's Butcher Shop'... noticed it last week, but I have to agree that the signs look pretty sloppy so I'm not expecting the second coming of Cumbrae. Fingers crossed I guess... love the location though, head to head meat throwdown at Queen & Jones! :-)

Speaking of new butcher shops, there is an interesting looking organic/naturally raised meat shop opening on the Danforth just east of Broadview (south side)... few doors west of Allen's I believe. I noticed their bold black and white signage a couple weekends ago but can't for the life of me remember the name. Anyone else seen the place or have info?

Palm Springs - Azur or other high end with tasting menu?

I did call and leave a message but haven't heard back yet... figured someone hear would know the scoop though.

Since it appears Blend is out I need to change our plans... any other high end dining spots with a tasting menu in the Palm Springs/Palm Desert/La Quinta area? Have promised a friend we would check out a tasting menu while we were there so hopefully there is somewhere worth trying.

Can anyone confirm if Blend has closed? Leaving for Palm Springs tomorrow and was planning on dinner there, hopefully it is still open!

Burger Shoppe - Gourmet Mediocrity

Quote: 'The first burger I had there was amazing, truly. Perfectly cooked patty, perfect amount of toppings.'

Have to agree with both this and the other sentiments... I went on the day they opened and both the burger and onion rings were excellent, however each successive trip has gone further downhill to the point where we now avoid Burger Shoppe. Its too bad really, they had the opportunity to provide a great product for a willing audience (priced on the high end of course) but like many other places they managed to slip into mediocrity at an alarming rate.

So does this mean the Leslieville location is now closed? Would assume so but haven't passed by in a few days so not sure.

Palm Springs - Azur or other high end with tasting menu?

Going to be in Palm Springs in mid-April for a few days and looking to find the best tasting menu available. Have read a bit about Azur at the La Quinta Resort but would appreciate some reviews and/or other suggestions for high end dining with a tasting menu. Thanks in advance!

Colborne Lane: Dinner as Entertainment

Great review and excellent pics... was debating going to Splendido this Sunday (it has been consistently outstanding every time) but your review and especially the pics have me debating a return to Colborne Lane for the tasting menu. Decisions!

Auberge de Pommier Review (non-Winterlicious)

Well, if you read my original review you'll notice that we ordered off the regular menu and did not take part in Winterlicious. Doesn't make your experience excusable but must say it is somewhat understandable.

As a side note, we imposed permanent ban on all things 'licious and are much happier for it. Say what you will about the intentions behind the events etc... but if you're looking for a nice meal a 'licious event is not the time/place to find it IMO.

Loblaw's = downhill

Was at the Queen's Quay Loblaws earlier and they were almost entirely out of chicken. As in, there were 2 whole chickens and 3 packs of drumsticks. I don't buy meat (or veg) from Loblaws but have to wonder... what kind of store runs out of chicken???

Downhill is an understatement.

Why are there such disparate reviews of Tomi Kro?

Tomi-Kro has been great the few times we've been and I have no issues in recommending it to others. It's not the best restaurant in the city by any means but in that price range it is definitely an enjoyable neighbourhood spot.

Speaking of which we might actually hit Tomi-Kro this week (Wednesday) if they can fit us in early before the Raptor's game, might have a quick review for you in a few days. :-)

What about Canoe? I'd think based on reviews that it is the best restaurant in Toronto that serves lunch.

A Year of Chow - Your 2007 Picks

I can't pick a single favourite place/meal as 2007 was a year full of amazing eats in Toronto for us. There were definitely way more hits than misses so I consider myself lucky... even more surprising was the fact that we had our first kid early in the year (March) but still managed to get our chow on. Having my wife's 2006 bonus in the form of an expense account this year and access to good babysitters (ie. mom/in-laws) certainly helped. :-)

If I had to narrow it down my favourite meals in 2007 would be Colborne Lane, Auberge de Pommier, Scaramouche, Susur, Lucien, C5, George, Amuse-Bouche, Splendido, and Harbour 60... these pretty much take the cake (not in order). Also had a few great meals at Globe, Tomi-Kro, Batifole, and a bunch more but the ones listed previously were certainly the best of the best. Looking forward to another great year of eats in 2008!

Strip loin steaks

If you need to marinate a strip loin to make it acceptable then it is pretty obvious what kind of quality (or lack thereof) we are talking about here. If you are going to marinate why not go with hangar or flank?
